I'm only 19 but I feel like an old person. what are examples of holistic treatment or any treatment besides painkillers and surgery for a herniated disc of the lumbar?
I bulged a disc deadlifting a while back. I had pain from my lower back extending down my butt into my leg. any bending or load barring activity caused pretty intense pain and i felt like a cripple. But by basically following the advice in this video and continuing to exercise with more emphasis on core stability, i'm pain free 5 months from the injury.
@beargrylls3 I'm not sponsored by anybody nor do i have anything to do with this video. I'm not suggesting anybody do what i did, because there can be a lot of variability in disc injuries, and mine was relatively minor. I just think that my story mite give hope to people who are dealing with something similar, because there are pretty much zero success stories on the internet and i had to try and recover going on faith alone. so in conclusion, there is hope for healing discs without surgery
I've been suffering for 6 months. I was diagnosed with significant loss of disc height with associated posterior disc bulge.The exiting L5 is contacted by osteophyte, facet arthopathy is multiple levels. I am so desperate to get better, I've tried the exercise from McKenzie but it only aggravated my problem. This posture that you mentioned is really difficult to do. But I will try. Thanks.
I had another episode from herniated L5 today from bending forward. Shocking pain went through my spine. The pelvic tilt in this video WORSENED my symptoms because it added pressure to the bulging disc.
I appreciate your response. But once I recover from my disc bulge and become normal again, can I use the gym ball as a chair? Would using the gym ball as a chair weaken the back muscles or make them strong?
Thanks for your response. I'm gonna replace the gym ball with a chair immediately. But, once I recover fully from my disc bulge, can I use the gym ball as a chair? Would it help? Can a gym ball cause any weakening of the low back muscles?
I've been having low back pain for the past 1 month. I took an MRI scan recently and found out that I have a disc bulge at L3-4 and L4-5. The report also says sacralisation of L5 which the doctor says is normal and not the cause of back pain. I am under going pelvic traction for spinal decompression right now. I am off NSAID's now and feel no pain. However, my low back is extremely stiff and I'm not able to walk freely. I use a gym ball to sit on my computer. Is that safe?
I would not recommend doing so for more than 5-15 minutes at a time. Keep in mind that the spinal stabilizers are already fatigued from the contraction due to pain. Sitting on a ball for a long period of time may lead to further fatigue and aggravate the situation. Proceed with caution.
i herniated 2 left lumar discs when i was 21, im nearly 24 now and no ammount of stretching, exercise, healthy eating or chiropractic/phisiotheraputic advice has helped. Does this mean my next step is surgery?
It all sounds so marvellous on this but the reality of a herniated disc is that the disc can be stuck to the sciatic nerve like glue and will not budge for anything other than a knife to pull it off. He makes it sound simple. Maybe ok for some minor conditions but not for all. This is good for post operative or preventative measures.
Yep. On internet, there is only so much I can say. In reality, there are many different positions and degrees of severity a disc may be bulging, and in some cases, there is nothing to be done except surgery. In others, they can be completely asymptomatic. I agree. Sounds simple, but only for some.
Wow, thank you! My buldge is definately minor, and ever since I have avoided hip flexion it has been getting better. I do not have any neurological symptoms, and I want to resume elliptical cardio. I will try it out very carefully and let you know how it went! Thank you. Your videos helped extremely!
Depends on individual situation. Some people could easily take 3-6 months for normal activities or longer for aggressive exercise/sports.
In my practice, it depends on again how bad the bulge is. No sitting cardio for anyone. If minor bulge, and approved by doc/therapist, may actually help.
Im 15 i have L4-L5 herniated discc with stonisis... I hateee it!.. I want you opinion.. I love to dance its my passion and 2 of my doctors say i will never be able to dance the way i want! Now im talking about high Kicks, Drill team stuff.. Would it be okayy if i healed my backk , then could i dancee or would it be bad for my backk??
Ive only had one doctor say to me this is common in football players & cheerleaders....but i dont know who to believe!
Sam, When I bend my pelvic forward like "spilling water out" as you say I have lots of pain in my right front pelvic and down the front of my leg. When I do the opposite tilting my pelvic back I have a bit of relief. is that normal. According to the MRI I have a herniated disc at L2-L3., Thanks, Jim B
great info, also a great idea is to tel others to increase the usage of the abdominal muscles. Since that will help the balance between the two(low back muscles/abdominal muscles) get balanced and increase in stability....
I'm 21 years old, have a triple scoliosis and herniated disc. I got it from Quad biking, jet skiing, tennis and basketball - apparently it's the up and down motions that shock the spine that caused it. Worse was the tennis, causing the scoliosis.
I'm 6 ft 7, 93 kg and I workout 6 days a week, I feel fine and stopped worrying about it. BUT realistically is it reckless to be deadlifting and squatting too heavy weights without a belt (+220 pounds)?
Sam, last year i had a problem with my L4-5 discprolapse, then my doctor said its better i do operation Nucleoplasty, to get some of liquid from disc, which was pushing the nerve to get rid of pain on my right leg and numness on the top of my foot. i did operation, this year i fell down the same problem i'm having. is it ok this exercises and wat can you additional advice me?
The more pain and/or dysfunction one has, the MORE that recommended exercises are ONLY done in a neutral spinal/pelvic alignment until relief is attained.

@MayanMini,
If a bulge is going in such a direction, you may have to do a few "pre" movements before doing pelvic tilting. I call these lateral shifts.

Hello. I've been told my spinal nerve is trapped under scar tissue following my herniation. Do you have any recommendations to help with the pain?

I am realizing that I have a herniated disk just from watching this video. I am in the healing process now and avoiding all flexion as you stated....
Question #1) how long does it take to heal?
Question#2) Can i do cardio on an elliptical during the healing process or will this just make things worse?

Will a bulged disc fully heal back to 100%?

@sirvolt,
Depends on where the bulge is, but I can say that is not a common reaction. It may not be a disc.

4:50 says it all; decrease spinal pressure
there is inversion therapy and inversion tables made for this particular reason.
I read good reviews about it and I am going to get one

I'm 16, I was told that I had a herniated disc four days ago--I got it from dancing ballet.
I hope that some of these non-surgical techniques can help...
