  • Horrible! How dare somebody add colour to this film!

  • This song was written by Thomas P. Westendorf who had a music store in the historic town of Delavan, Wisconsin.

There is a plaque on the building regarding this history.

  • ...incredibly romantic!

  • can i get this colour version

  • Festus sang a few times on Gunsmoke and once on Have Gun Will Travel. Don't judge a book by its cover.

  • it still blows my girlfriend's mind to know that this is the same man who was festus in gunsmoke. totally different voice traits. she couldn't believe that jim nabors sang oh holy night as deeply as he did either. lol......that girl is priceless.

  • Thanks. Just love to hear Ken sing. Did you know that Duke and Maureen were great friends? Duke not only considered her to be a beautiful woman, but also like ''one of the guys''! She was one of the few people not daunted by the cantankerous, but brilliant director, Pappy Ford. KP

  • @Hawkswill Had heard that. Grand comment. Thanks and thank you for watching. Merry Christmas. Charlie

  • @navydoctrinidad Maureen may not have been intimidated by John Ford, but Wayne sure was. When Pappy showed up on the set of "The Alamo", Duke was beside himself.

  • Timeless Elegance!!!

  • This has always been my favorite movie. I have walked the area of Moab where this was filmed. My daughter's middle name is Kathleen and my second wife was named Kathleen, Rio Grande and this song helped when my wife died. Good to see it posted.

  • @Savoy6442 I'm glad its there for you to see when you wish. GOD Bless You and have a glorious Thanksgiving.

  • Ahhhh! The good ole days when a mans word was his bond and justice prevailed !

  • My great grandfather, when he was a fat snivelling kid used to clean and polish the cavalrys bridles and saddles during the Apache wars in Texas and Arizona.

  • @SteveShredda What a wonderful heritage. I bet you are proud to know that story. Charlie

  • @SteveShredda

That's wonderful. I hope he wrote down or dictated his experiences. Those first-hand recollections are priceless. You must be so proud.

  • the sons of the pioneers included roy rogers in the years preceeding ken curtis, there is also a current group who have amazing harmonies that reflect the son of the pioneers. they are "the sons of the san joaquin". check them out, not to be found in stores, well worth the search.

  • Outstanding! Ah, for the good ole days!

  • Maureen O'Hara = The Most Beautiful Woman God Created :-)

  • Great movie and great song. It tears me every time.

  • What a magnificent voice, Mr. Curtis had....God Bless his memory.

  • Charlie, it is hard to realize that ole Festus is involved in the singing of this song. Thanks for a rarity, my friend, and thanks to Barbara for sharing.

  • Hi,this is wonderful, never heard it sung like this before.

What a class act they were,

I'm sure I have seen the film, but dont remember this clip.

    Thanks for sharing.

  • YEP!!..that is Festus!!! from Gunsmoke!! :) this is the sons of the pioneers

  • YEP!!..that is Festus!!! from Gunsmoke!! :)

  • How to get the color version ?

    Good on ya , matie...

  • @sanantonio007 I have found a source on the net. Go to "product.half.ebay.com/Rio-Grande-VHS-1994-Color." I'm sure you could get it. Luck to you. Charlie

  • @sanantonio007 Turner colorized every bit of b&w he cold get his hands on in the late 80s and early 90s. The good news is that forced his production company to piece together pristine sections of b&w to strike new prints that they would colorize with computers. I'm partial to the b&w. It looks like John Ford and his photographer were painting with black, gray, and white oils.

  • @bobjfs I always wondered why Turner did not colorize the first portion of "The Wizard of Oz" if he felt b&w was so bad.

  • @VA24541 It would have ruined the emotional and visual impact of Dorothy opening the door and entering into OZ. My father saw that movie when he was six.He never forgot the oo's and ah's from the audience in the theater when that transition occurred. It was the first colored movie he ever saw and for that audience, at that time, it made OZ seem so magical and amazing. For me it still has that affect.

  • @gammondog ..That is my point. Ted Turner had no right to ruin the works of these directors, yet he did it anyway. As I plainly stated, John Ford could have shot Rio Grande in color if he wanted. He knew how to do it. In 1949 "She Wore a Yellow Ribbon" was filmed in Technicolor . John Ford made the choice to use black & white. The rest of us (including Ted Turner) should honor that choice.

  • @sanantonio007 Rio Grande was filmed in black & white by the great John Ford. . This "colorization" process was a scam developed about 20 years ago. If you notice, the faces of everyone look as though they just escaped a funeral parlor. To change John Ford's work this way is a crime. He could have filmed it in color in 1951 had he wanted to.

  • The Sons of the Pioneers--amazing group. The complicated harmonies, when the melody moves from voice to voice, hasn't been re-created by anyone else.

  • @Arkay66 Thanks for the comment. Great point. Charlie

  • Colour i've never seen that film in colour always black n white .. even the dvd release is BW ... classic and forever timeless film

  • This is beautiful singing... thanks for posting.

  • wonderful stuff! always worth a few tears!!

  • this is great

  • Just beautiful...i never could convince my Dad that this was the same Ken Curtis that played Festus on Gunsmoke.....he just didn't think it could be the same fella. LOL

  • @olmose Ken was quite a fellow. Much talent. His role in the Conagher movie was his last. He was great. We will miss him but we still have him. Sounds strange doesn't it? Charlie

  • @navydoctrinidad He certainly was talented. I remember being glued to the tv as a youngster to see Festus. The banter between him and Doc (Milburn Stone) was incredible. Miss that era. Saw James Arness just turned 88!

  • @44Snyder I hate to tell you but "Matt" passed away today. He was 88. We will all miss him. Thanks for the comment. Charlie

  • I had a sister. She died before I was born. Her name was Cathleen, she died in her communion dress in my Mother's arms in our house in Dublin in the early 50's. The doctors said she died on "consumption" which was a euphemism for childhood leukemia. This was such a popular Irish song at the time that my Mom couldn't turn on the radio for fear that it might be sung. I was very young, but I always wondered why she cried when it was sung. Now I know.

  • @Tphilpott1 Such a "beautiful" Irish (& human)heartache. Your lovely mother carried that with her all her life of course. God Bless Her.

  • When ever I think of the Duke and Maureen this is the scene that comes to mind. A great cut from a great movie. They act it perfectly and, of course, the Sons of the Pioneers are wonderful as usual.

    Gracias Doc.

  • Beautiful memories

  • @Jorgeyuk Thanks for your great comment.

  • in Germany everybody knows Ken Curtis as the "Tattered Cowboy". From the movie Gun smoke. But we know and not forget, that he was a good singer.

Annee Hew heureux. Charlie

  • What a great lookin' couple Maureen and Duke made...then add the heavenly voices of the Sons of the Pioneers..wonderful.

  • Ce morceau est chanté divinement bien. Beau groups. Reprise également par le grand Elvis Presley ....

  • @Elvis86100 Je suis desole. J'ai vu juste votre derniere note. Merci pour votre commentaire. Ils chantent bien et Oui Elvis stait grand. Charlie

  • Great clip.

  • Excellent a super version of a great song

    Thnks Sessnazy for sharing

  • Beautiful version of a wonderful song,on a terrific movie. There is so much great music in this film. Not just songs, but the score is extremely moving as well. The first 10 minutes are sublime. And yes,Maureen O'Hara is gorgeous.

  • @jonahlevin67 Isn't she though. Total lady. Has it all.

  • @jonahlevin67 Would like to comment, jonah, but I really can't add anything to what you've said, except to say I totally agree!

  • You are certainly right. They were also in "The Quiet Man." Probably more.

  • gee! john wayne and maureen o'hara and then add ken curtis !! THAT TEAM BEATS ANY CARD HAND IN HEAVEN OR HELL !!!

    HDONMCCUISTION

  • Just a note to all who commented. Miss O'Hara also has a home in the American Southwest and in the Caribbean. I understand she shares some time in each. Thanks for your grand comments and thanks for watching.

  • Ken Curtis and I share a hometown!! He graduated from the same high school as I did...before my time....smile!!! Loved this movie...back when times were simpler!! God bless, thank you for sharing it.

  • who,s the guy next to ken curtis? we must surely give him some curtisy and gratitude for the brililiant vocals.

  • I'm so glad you posted this! I saw this on TCM at least 5 years ago and now just got to see it again. The emotion behind this scene is just so powerful and sad.

  • One of the most intense scenes in "Rio Grande".....This was what John Ford advocated...less dialogue and more "acting." No one did that better than John Wayne and Maureen O'Hara.

  • You're more than welcome. Wonderful man and talent.

  • this is truly a moving piece of vocal harmony led by the wonderful ken curtis, i'll never forget the time as a kid watching this movie with mum, looking up at her at the end , tears in her eyes, as i have now! .....absolutely beautiful and thankyou for sharing this.

  • @pascanal - your words are beautifully written and yes each time i see this classic moment in movie history i too [adult as i am] am moved to tears - are you aware that the beautiful maureen o'hara is still alive and lives back in her beloved ireland - cheers

  • @seanosutherland ,many thanks for your comment.
