@mackdetroit4life yeah what is the limit something like 45 in there? ridiculous...and probably full of cameras and cops too knowing how they do things in "Mass"...
@nastyrocket Yeah, you can't drive too fast in there 'cause it gets a little tight and some of the curves in the tunnel don't seem long enough to warrant a speed more than 45mph.
welcome to boston the following are optional speed limits stopsigns yeld signs directionals you pass in any lane and if you are old you pull out on the highway and drive 20m.p.h. & winter is more fun really atleast the potholes are filled with snow
A few months ago I I heard that a few light fixtures fell due to corrosion by salt and water. No injuries involved. How many light fixtures are in the tunnels?
Once you pass that last curve and cross underneath that railroad bridge, you're on an auld, auld freeway that was originally built in the 1950s and extensively remodeled in the 1980s.
technically, metro boston has 7.5 million people, if you go by CSA measurements, and that includes people from southern NH, RI, and eastern CT, along with residents from central and eastern MA (minus the Cape). CSA is more accurate as it takes into account commuting patterns and "sphere of influence". This would make metro boston 5th largest in the US.
But there is 4.5 million that live in greater boston, which is a subdivision of metro boston.
I've only been to mass once with the hubby in 2005 and I love all the winding roads and the trees that are everywhere,in fact I've begged him to move our family there.
I'm on my way back Tuesday! You stopped at the exit in Revere that I'll be taking to go back to Everett. I don't like going through Chelsea because of those lighs on Reveah beach pahkway! lol
you just gotta know and study the city. fucking own it. Yes, taking the T is a great way to get to Boston but if you're like me to rather drive. The Big Dig started in 1988(21 years) ago and is supposed to be completely finished by 2012. Major Headaches, Major Costs, but so far it has somewhat ileavated the traffic nightmare. I liked the video. Some of the captions were funny, some of them made us look like idiots, saying our city is awful. B+.
the video makes it look harder than it really is but then again if you can driv ein Boston you can drive anywhere!! I love driving in but def take the T if you work there ChEaPeR
i was just in boston and ny. didnt get to see the big dig...just the bridge. and i got to go through the lincoln tunnel (which took forever). btw...yankees and red sox both suck.
Neat video. However, this looks terribly confusing. If this is what you must deal with when commuting where you live, than I am sympathetic that you have to navigate such a labyrinth over there. Coming from a military family who lived all over the USA, cities seem to be easier to navigate and more grid like the more west you go it seems.
That point is indeed true my friend, what you have to remember is that as we go further out west the cities are younger and so built to a certain ground plan/more modern, i mean boston was first a city back in the days before even the revolution happended
hey freewayjim, i travel these roads quite fequently, and this is the first time i've found someone who has echoed the same feelings i have had about the big dig.
while i'm in favor of how it improved the city, your comments are, i'm sure, exactly how most of us bostonians feel about it's construction and it's ride.
what about those silly subways they were gonna put in la?? im in detroit and we have the least mass transit, mabe to miami who is also bad but at least has cabbies
other city's don't have the resources nor the senators (kennedy) to convince the federal government to hand them a trillion dollars as boston did...consider boston lucky.
@wimpie25 Yeah right! $22+ billion of complete waste for each city! Our cities would be godly to have that much money put into massive transit systems, and not a bridge and 2 tunnels! The Big Dig was a complete waste given what we could have done with that money.
@wimpie25 You missed the point of the video. The Big Dig is a disaster. There are SO many accidents in those tunnels, it's crazy. This is the last thing any city needs.
highways are like concrete and metal rivers. i think its totally awesome that they built a highway underneath the city. shows a bit of what future transport will look like.
very bitchin video of the Boston highway system. that was my first town driven professionally and in depth back in January 2005 as part of a telecom assignment and surprisingly I found those drivers more courteous than the NYC drivers. Great snow removal system to and no problems getting around the financial district. Just trying to cross over 93 into Old Town was a bitch because of the Big Dig. Really no problems to speak of other than those annoying traffic circles. Tunnels are a rush :)
Had you kept the film rolling a little more on US1 North past the 2:17 mark, you would've passed where I lived a while as a construction worker in the early 90s! The Tudor Gardens apartment complex.
yea!!!!...i remeber going through the mess when I was little...making of the big dig was a total mess!!!...but now its better..but damn its still hard to drive in..drives beware of the fast exits and crazy drivers. and boston does have summer..fall is very short, then winter comes and slaps you face and then a sort spring than a hott and humid summer.
The 14 billion pricetag was not only for the I-93 tunnel, but also for the Zakim Bridge, the I-90 extension below the harbor to Logan Airport and a total reconstruction of that area. To be frank, the initial estimates were way too low. Do this kind of project in Europe and you've spend the same amount of money.
I love roads, you're right. There are only 600,000 within Boston city limits (which are tiny), but there are over 7,400,000 in the CSA, making it the fifth largest in the nation.
nice steve Vai playing guitar solo. He is one of the best around. his performance of this is on a 2 disk cd. going over tobin into revere , come on down.
