Thompson WAS about getting high, and his getting high was about taking a stand against society's conventions whether they were tyrannical or not. He was in it for the pure, unadulterated truth of the matter and for him the truth was that he liked to take drugs. He opposed society's standards because by forming to any standards, good or bad, you were essentially hiding the real truth. Saying that Hunter S. Thompson wasn't a "druggie" just shows ignorance. In the extended version of this interview, Hunter snorts a line of coke off his thumb behind the clapboard, when he ran for sheriff of Aspen his platform was "any drug worth having can't be sold for money," and even on top of all that useless info, go back and re-read the opening to Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas. Hunter S. Thompson was most certainly a "druggie."

sometimes I wonder if the whole drug thing was just an act, he was kindof an unserious guy that liked to amuse himself... and everyone bought it! no, I'm sure he tried drugs, but I wonder if he was really a big user
i mean like that was part of his image... kindof like his whole nervous druggout out act, he seems to exaggerate it for a joke. WTF why do people say he seems like a jerk, he's not acting like a jerk at all, people are can't tell $#!+
He isn't put anything on at all. It's well known and even talked about by his ex-wife the over the top amount of drink and narcotics he took. He realised the total depravity of modern society, and once you truly see the truth it is not a pretty deal. One of the obvious ways to deal with this i to medicate with drugs. Personally I have a lot in common with him in this respect. It is with intelligence is inversely proportional to happiness.
it's called sarcasm buddy, lay of the lucy its making your brain work on a low primeval level.. everyone that is not a dumb fuck like you knows about HST and his likening towards psychedelics and many other drugs. to state that he might be under the influence of LSD is just to remark the obvious.. so, with that said.. go have an out o body experience and sit on a dick! peace!!
So is it a habit of yours to say Peace!! after insulting a fellow by instrucying him to sit on a dick...peace!! Just kidding now all is well with the world just joshing ya buddy . Or is this something more deep seede...did you want him to sit on your uh...richard-little dick-dickie??
@PsychedelicVideos As much as lsd showed me about myself and about the world, it also irreparably fucked with my view of how things are vs. how things should be. I always knew, but after acid, it became real, and life began to drift into a dream, because I just can't believe that humanity fucked up this badly. I can see the path HST went and had to "solve [the] problem" regarding himself and the characters he creates. He's so much more, but that was his fear. His fear eventually became him.
@PsychedelicVideos I've done it a couple of times in my younger days and I know plenty about it. The actual 'experience' after taking it is a small part of what I know about the drug.
One thing is for sure, there is absolutely NO BENEFIT to experimental or continual use of LSD. The 70's were a decade given to excesses in all things of 'stimulation'. Unfortunately there were those in positions of power in media who promoted it's use and young children were often the targets.
Just take a look at Sid and Marty Kroffts television programming if you need an example. They were huge supporters of LSD not only taking it themselves but supplying it to the many writers and producers in their company. HR Puffinstuff, a talking flute, sentient plants and the colour schematics of the show were not contrived in the studios over coffee and craft services...
@BradJC70 When you said there's absolutely no benefit to experimental use of LSD, you are wrong. That may have been the case for you, but not for others. That was my point.
@RayRox17 Really? Lets have an example of LSD experimentation where the experience was beneficial. We are talking human and not lab animal accounts here.
Acid was beneficial to my life. It gave me a different perspective on the world and let me appreciate the fact that even small things, like a flower are miracles of nature. I'm a lot more self-aware too and I find I can handle emotions better because I now know where they originate from. It's been almost a year since I used it, and in short it has just made me a happier person :)
@kandixflipz1 I will try to be kind... If the profile is true, you are 18. Give yourself some time to actually build a 'life' of experience lest you prematurely and inaccurately count that which you see now as a benefit. Emotionally, you're still 18 yrs. old. I'm sure you have yet to experience more than a few when the situations that actually warrant them arise. Flowers ARE a natural miracle. To use LSD to be able to appreciate that, is like needing a chainsaw to cut a steak.
(cont) If you want a REAL, and HONEST 'different' perspective on 'the world', travel within it. Mark on a globe, points as far as you can possibly (and financially) get to from where you are, that interest you. The more you are able to, as well as unable to, will give you a very different perspective on the world, believe me. I suggest starting with Africa if it's the 'small things' in your everyday life you seek to appreciate. Or stay on an ashram in India. You WILL appreciate your life here.
The point I make here, is that not only is chemical stimulation or 'enhancement' a short-term 'illusion' of reality, it's long term effects haven't been aggressively studied but the clinical analysis done to date reveals very interesting, albeit frightening insights. ADD in adulthood is the least of which could occur later on. The bottom line there is, LSD is a contra-indicate, as far as healthy cerebral development goes. Would you allow a younger (sister/brother) to take it after knowing this?
@uwoodyjk How many have YOU published you stunted, family embarrassment moron? Huh? You want to compare accomplishments? You couldn't catch up to me with a ten year head start you pissant shit head. Go fuck yourself, no one else is gonna do it. Your 'sock' girlfriend doesn't count.

No drug addicts are pleasant people. Especially violent ones with a penchant for snuff films. I will never understand why this guy was exalted by a certain segment of society.
He never had to be pleasant, and no one ever described him that way. He was the jaded and sarcastic voice in times and places that generally had hypocricy instead. You don't have to respect his actions, but his words and intentions behind them are from a person that could barely take a world that was more unpleasant than him.
I think he's trying to be a jerk because he thinks they're parading him around like some circus freak. They want him to be Raoul Duke, which while a part of him isn't all he is. Kind of weird but that's Hunter for ya.
He's not being a jerk, he's probably fuckin sick of journalists coming around and treating him like some kind of animal on display: "Oh, come see the crazy druggie" He wasn't a druggie, he was searching for the knowledge that many of us are to afraid to find ourselves.
I've read Fear and Loathing on the Campaign Trail '72. A very detailed account of a presidential campaign. Thompson had a great way writing about the ugly truth that other reporters are repulsed by.
I didn't know he wrote a book on the '92 campaign. Should check it out.
brilliant guy... own original style of writing/personality quirks..just reading from fear and loathing on the campaign trail '92 a few days ago..'republican party reptiles'..he knew the score..photo of him shrinking into himself with his shades on and giant cigar crossed legged at a table just after bill clinton let out an ear piercing blood curdling shriek that seriously freaked out the rolling stone team..anyone here read that book?

No drug addicts are pleasant people. Especially violent ones with a penchant for snuff films. I will never understand why this guy was exalted by a certain segment of society.
duncan36 3 years ago
He never had to be pleasant, and no one ever described him that way. He was the jaded and sarcastic voice in times and places that generally had hypocricy instead. You don't have to respect his actions, but his words and intentions behind them are from a person that could barely take a world that was more unpleasant than him.

He's probably so fucked up during this interview, he could care less about how much of a jerk he is.

I think he's trying to be a jerk because he thinks they're parading him around like some circus freak. They want him to be Raoul Duke, which while a part of him isn't all he is. Kind of weird but that's Hunter for ya.

He's not being a jerk, he's probably fuckin sick of journalists coming around and treating him like some kind of animal on display: "Oh, come see the crazy druggie" He wasn't a druggie, he was searching for the knowledge that many of us are to afraid to find ourselves.

he was a druggy looking for knowledge.

I'm a big fan of Hunter Thompson, but he is a jerk here!

I've read Fear and Loathing on the Campaign Trail '72. A very detailed account of a presidential campaign. Thompson had a great way writing about the ugly truth that other reporters are repulsed by.
I didn't know he wrote a book on the '92 campaign. Should check it out.

brilliant guy... own original style of writing/personality quirks..just reading from fear and loathing on the campaign trail '92 a few days ago..'republican party reptiles'..he knew the score..photo of him shrinking into himself with his shades on and giant cigar crossed legged at a table just after bill clinton let out an ear piercing blood curdling shriek that seriously freaked out the rolling stone team..anyone here read that book?
great channel--hunter appreciates it you can bet on that
