Thompson WAS about getting high, and his getting high was about taking a stand against society's conventions whether they were tyrannical or not. He was in it for the pure, unadulterated truth of the matter and for him the truth was that he liked to take drugs. He opposed society's standards because by forming to any standards, good or bad, you were essentially hiding the real truth. Fans argue and cling to either the mad-man or enlightened writer image when the truth is that he was both.

I've read Fear and Loathing on the Campaign Trail '72. A very detailed account of a presidential campaign. Thompson had a great way writing about the ugly truth that other reporters are repulsed by.
