Great, by just reading at the comments here I finally realized I'm not alone in loving this creatures. I don't know why there are considered a pest in gardens when as I see it they are my best partners: They eat whatever is decomposing and shit urea wich is great for my plants. Besides, they are so silent and low profile. How could I not love them!!!
I have an aquarium with snails, wood bugs, pill bugs, worms, slugs, etc... and I find that they need a small mist once a day. If you plant moss in your tank and it is green the amount of water is probaly right.
I have a terrarium full of them. I provide a wet paper towel at the bottom of a plastic container and then grab some compost soil and dump it in. Then I search for the sow bugs and pill bugs and put them in. A lot of the small ones began to die suddenly; I believe I may have over-watered them. Over dampness is just as dangerous as under dampness. They have gills and lungs, both right near each other. If they're in your house it has to be because it's got a lot of moisture.
I'm pretty sure sowbugs (related to the famous Pillbug) are actually crustaecians -- related to shrimp, crabs, etc. I see them in my bathtub when the weather gets real hot, they climb up the drain and up into the tub. I don't kill them. I just put 'em back outside in a moist environment like under hedges or rocks.
I found a sowbug crwaling out of my soil in my pot indoor. Basil was growing in pot. I was watering it and I saw it crawl out. Are they harmful to my plants? Do they eat crops?
yes they do eat plants and crops in fact there have benn cases of them destroying whole green house plants but instead of killing them mabye as a sugustion you could keep them as pets but if you were to do that youd have to researc it.=D
But if I do that, they will eat my plants. I might think of keeping them if they are benificial at eating fungus or bad harm insects that harm my plants.
well they do eat fungal growth but you dont have to keep them around youre plants, instead you could get a smal aqarium and put them in there as well and you wont have to wory about them getting out because they cant climb up glass or plastic.if you want any more info on them then just ask me on my page
are these bugs actual living in a colony like ants and termites? Are they socoal to each other? Did they built nest/hive? Is there a queen, worker and soldier.
Sow bugs are actually very social crustacians. you very rarely ever find just one and when they aren't active they're pressed right up next to each other. I have found many types from the kind that can roll into a ball to very speedy ones that cannot. I also have a tank of fully aquatic sow bugs. they're not like bees or termites, more like deer in how they socialize.
I have no idea what they're actually called, I find them in the creek by my house, they're much better designed for aquatic life then all the others I've seen.
yha actually most sow bugs you find on land are decendants of more crustatian like sow bugs that lived in the water but also land sow bug still have gills like their aquatic cousins. if you want any more info on them just ask on my page.

Hi just looking at this video and was wondering what that small little whitish (kinda translucent) insect is that seems to jump away right at the end part of your filming. Thanks
It isn't an insect, but a shell casing that caught the wind. I'm looking for a better place to post videos because I have many at 840x480 that would look like crap on YouTube.

Each of these are about 2mm wide. It was a little out of focus in parts and then YouTube really screwed it up. :-/
