  • It actually in price ranges from 10-90 bucks a pop really. Though Most people I've talked to mention it doesn't taste like much. It's mostly just to kinda state one's importance.

  • Yoko Akino... SEK-SAY!!!

  • you CAN'T eat it on a REGULAR BASIS !!!! IT'S WAY TOO EXPENSIVE AND RARE FOR REGULAR MEAL. YOU'LL GO BROKE !!!!

  • I don't think anyone EVER eats it on a regular basis. I have eaten it, Chinese New Year, any type of celebration we would have it, although my family is pretty well off. We usually have it in a broth, and it has a very delicious and amazing texture.

Most people believe the cutting fins and dumping back into the ocean, which is true, this does happen, but most of the fins come from a shark that has been used for all it's body, not just it's fins.

  • holy crap.. i consider this the MOST EXQUISITE DELICACY MOST EXPENSIVE MOST FORBIDDEN secret ingredient on iron chef. i have high respect for sharks. and i am a animal rights supporter.. i will let this one go.. as i am honestly curious BUT only to this LEVEL of expertise and mastery \\\

seems like the challenger came to win, not to challenge. havent seen this episode! giving this my full attention lol. not picking a winner im still caught up in the ingredient

  • tastes like chicken vomit

  • Chua Lam! That guy's pretty hardcore about Chinese food, so there'll be no bullshitting here

  • oh frik xD chua lam is there?? if he's going to judge, i feel sorry for chen ~_~ chua is always a hard judge to please lol

  • I love her comment at 1:24... are we on buget... next well have bean sprouts or long onions.... yeah talk about blowing the wad (ha ha ha)

  • It depends on how you cook it. Mostly to get the taste, you will need to cook it for approximately 2-3 hours to get that moisture, the taste is mostly appear in the soup and add a bit of red vinegar to it to get more flavor.

  • whats kemshi

  • it's not tasteless. Scarcity and the time it takes to preserve them makes them one of the most expensive ingredients available. Much like expensive wine.

  • Actually on it's own it is quite tasteless. It's normally eaten in a broth. As for the expense, I would say difficulty in catching the shark and yes, scarcity.

  • Chen is my favourite!

  • His father introduce the hot bean paste to chinese cuisine.

  • his father introduced hot bean paste? whoa he must be born in some ancient dynasty and have lived a few centuries

  • people chill. they are spending $3600 to eat s piece of this. if they are that determined to eat this let them be.

  • firm yet flexible.. nice..

  • i doubt that i would even try cooking with shark fin. it would be too expensive if i fragged up

  • Imagine if you accidentally dropped it on the floor!

    XD

And what would you serve/cook with it? Any other ingredients would seem so... overshadowed, lol.

  • you probably wouldn't need much, just a herb here and there

  • Just rinse it off and move on--something that expensive is NOT going in the garbage!

  • You served the soup by adding a touch of red vinegar.

  • that's why it's expensive! God people, let it go. It's not like you the one who kill those shark. Beside, these shark fin mostly get from those shark who got injure or going to the lab for research.

  • akino is one of my favorite guests.

  • Listen guys, I appreciate all sorts of food, live dead I don't care, but only when the animal, at least in the way I see it, does not react in a visibly negative way to the harm that is being done to it. So for example, i say a clam boiled alive does not demonstrate a reaction which generates empathy for me, but a calf does. That's why I wouldn't cook a calf alive! If it was anesthetised and then killed then I would. Sharks for me, demonstrate that response as such I think it's barbaric!!!!!!!!

  • reply to matiasnino: you speak the truth. I, too, have watched sharkwater and highly recommend it to others. When they say it costs $3600 for 1 kg of shark fin theres something there to think about. It is extremely hard to come by. They are an endangered species and vital to the ecosystem that provides the oxygen that we breathe. I'm sure this is hard to comprehend but read about it and watch sharkwater then decide for yourself.

  • Boohoo.

Lions and Tigers eat people, I don't see you complaining about them.

  • is chen japanese? or half chinese/jap?

  • His father Chen Kenmin=Chinese and his Mother Youko=Japanese. So Chen is half of both.

  • Huge ass sharkfin is called 天九翅.

    Very expensive.

Chua Lam is a great gourmet.

He directed many cooking movies, shows, and he can cook as well.

  • yum i love shark fin soup

  • this has got to be one of the most expensive battles, i think only battle swallow's nest cost more.

  • this is the most expensive one. the swallow nest one cost $24,000 US. this one cost $30,000 US.

  • How is Chua Lam exactly?

  • "High priced commentator." Fukui san is too funny!!!

Docs reply to that made me lolz. =w=

  • they're really really tasty. i'm salivating..

    shark's fin soup, mmmmm...

  • Shark Fins...hmmm...never tried it before. I would love to someday.

  • Really? Wow. How does it taste like and if you really do eat it everyday, watch out for the mercury and the price.

  • Sarcasm is lost on the internet. He was probably joking.

  • Er... you eat it almost everyday? May I know where do you live? Are you a shark hunter? :P

Coz sharkfin is actually very expensive, and we usually have it only on big occasion, e.g. Chinese New Year, etc.

  • Shark fin wouldn't be anything I'd eat almost everyday, even if it's very good.

  • Hey Arch..What Kind have you eaten?

  • Never had it in my life. I'm just an average working man who couldn't even afford a small chunk of shark fin. Not that I'd care for it either, though.

  • @archo89 u probably ate it before in a soup

    but didnt recall it

  • @secretorganisation U must be out of your mind. Nobody can afford something this expensive. once in a while is understandable but everyday. Do you even know what it taste like? just curious?

  • Shark Fins are very bland, and chewy.

I eat it once in a blue moon.

Very expensive, $70 Canadian dollars for a small bowl.
