It actually in price ranges from 10-90 bucks a pop really. Though Most people I've talked to mention it doesn't taste like much. It's mostly just to kinda state one's importance.
I don't think anyone EVER eats it on a regular basis. I have eaten it, Chinese New Year, any type of celebration we would have it, although my family is pretty well off. We usually have it in a broth, and it has a very delicious and amazing texture.
Most people believe the cutting fins and dumping back into the ocean, which is true, this does happen, but most of the fins come from a shark that has been used for all it's body, not just it's fins.
holy crap.. i consider this the MOST EXQUISITE DELICACY MOST EXPENSIVE MOST FORBIDDEN secret ingredient on iron chef. i have high respect for sharks. and i am a animal rights supporter.. i will let this one go.. as i am honestly curious BUT only to this LEVEL of expertise and mastery \\\
seems like the challenger came to win, not to challenge. havent seen this episode! giving this my full attention lol. not picking a winner im still caught up in the ingredient
It depends on how you cook it. Mostly to get the taste, you will need to cook it for approximately 2-3 hours to get that moisture, the taste is mostly appear in the soup and add a bit of red vinegar to it to get more flavor.
This is Bull shit . 60% of sharks are endangered because of this fucking soup! Damn Chinese people all they eat is endangered animals there are so many Chinese people why don't we eat them.
it's not tasteless. Scarcity and the time it takes to preserve them makes them one of the most expensive ingredients available. Much like expensive wine.
Actually on it's own it is quite tasteless. It's normally eaten in a broth. As for the expense, I would say difficulty in catching the shark and yes, scarcity.
that's why it's expensive! God people, let it go. It's not like you the one who kill those shark. Beside, these shark fin mostly get from those shark who got injure or going to the lab for research.
Listen guys, I appreciate all sorts of food, live dead I don't care, but only when the animal, at least in the way I see it, does not react in a visibly negative way to the harm that is being done to it. So for example, i say a clam boiled alive does not demonstrate a reaction which generates empathy for me, but a calf does. That's why I wouldn't cook a calf alive! If it was anesthetised and then killed then I would. Sharks for me, demonstrate that response as such I think it's barbaric!!!!!!!!

Shark finning is a barbaric practice that has a large hand in endangering a vital part of the Earths. Already it has virtually eliminated 90% of the sharks in the ocean.
Chinese chefs need to take a moral stand and let their barbaric ancient practice go the way of the dodo before sharks do and the entire world makes them pay.
Watch the documentary Sharkwater and see for yourself!
reply to matiasnino: you speak the truth. I, too, have watched sharkwater and highly recommend it to others. When they say it costs $3600 for 1 kg of shark fin theres something there to think about. It is extremely hard to come by. They are an endangered species and vital to the ecosystem that provides the oxygen that we breathe. I'm sure this is hard to comprehend but read about it and watch sharkwater then decide for yourself.
Never had it in my life. I'm just an average working man who couldn't even afford a small chunk of shark fin. Not that I'd care for it either, though.
@secretorganisation U must be out of your mind. Nobody can afford something this expensive. once in a while is understandable but everyday. Do you even know what it taste like? just curious?

Please do not eat shark fin.
It is tasteless, and flavour comes from chicken and meat stock, therefore it is over priced.
Furthermore, shark being the top predator, its body has accumulated mercury, which is not good for health,
There are plenty of other food around other than shark fin soup, which does not fill your stomach and is not essential for sustaining life.
Let the sharks live!
They have been around for 500 millions years, but are now being eaten into extinction. tinyurl(.)com(/)y7uytsv

Imagine if you accidentally dropped it on the floor!
XD
And what would you serve/cook with it? Any other ingredients would seem so... overshadowed, lol.
VampyressKatt 3 years ago
you probably wouldn't need much, just a herb here and there

Just rinse it off and move on--something that expensive is NOT going in the garbage!
