I've been playing the guitar for about 10 years... with that said. I totally get it. You know exactly what you're going for and it works. Beautifully done sir.
Really liked your "stinky" jazz. I loved it! I am a guy who's been playing for a little over a year and this will be my first electric guitar. I love jazz but I want to now if I can get the rockabilly and punk tone with a simple practice amp .
it's not off key, he's just using different modes and scales and stuff. he's obviously not off key, any guitarist who has this type of feel is going to be able to stay in key no problem and just play some cool avant garde stuff. he plays too fluently to be a guy who can't stay in key, he's just doing some unique stuff. this is great, unique and well played. nice job man.
The thing that bothers me more than the tonal issues is that the poster never gives credit to Bobby Womack, the composer of this song "Breezin" and to George Benson who popularized the guitar version of it. You are going to tell me how many frets are on your guitar but omit the source of the song you play? Lame. Traditionally, the composer always gets credit. And if you learned this by listening to Benson then he gets credit too even if your A Mixolydian improvisation needs work.
So what if he left key a couple of times....cut him a break man. At least he made an effort. Just takes some more practice. Bye the way...it wasn't that bad man. Just keep playing.
improvise all day long with A Mixolydian (D major scale with A as the tonal center) A B C# D E F# G A
I think the reason people think this is out of tune is because the player throws in quite a few blues note bends which makes it like A minor and then he plays in D minor pentatonic. I think he has good chops but some theory lessons are in order. But what do I know?
On another note... I'm digging the tone you got there. I was researching "cheaper" tube combos I could possibly take with me to boston and I stumbled across your vid. my peavey valveking and 2x12 make for awful luggage. Thanks for posting this vid and sorry for using your youtube channel as a verbal wrestling ring. How are you liking your palomino? I heard some people saying they have a heat issues, like the control knobs becoming scolding hot after use. Have you noticed this?
Very jazzy.. the beginning was a bit off.. but you brought it together very well man =) I'd love to jam with you any time, your a very good musician. Improv is what I do and you seem to have what it takes. Keep on playing
nice playing man any chance you could give me some good clean tone settings like that for the me 70 and a roland cube 30x i can get good metal tones i just don't know how to get good clean maybe its my guitar its only a CORT i like it but its my first guitar or its quite probably my fingers
@Jayciethatonekid The main repeated melody and the rhythm parts are fine, the ad libs are out of tune as often as not and if you think its wonderful its not me thats deaf, some of it is so bad its painful. (and the session guy behind me winced a few times when i played it)
@abergreg I'll take his off key improv choices over your predictable cheesy butt rock tracks any day. Seriously anyone who notices this comment go look at abergreg's music. Enjoy.
@abergreg I agree he is off and that there are mistakes in his playing, but, stuff like the "mistakes" at 3:50 would catch any learned players ears "he threw in a raised 4! that's rad!". and it was executed (maybe accidentally) as a passing nonchord tone. maybe you can think outside of the I vi ii V progression he outlined for you and think maybe there's other chordal possibilities than what you're perceiving. Heard of nonchord tones? Listen to anything by J.S. Bach and argue he composed off key
@abergreg oh yea and about "taste"... I highly doubt you posses the palate to even acknowledge "taste" on my level. When you've performed in operas and oratorios, in professional studio Jazz and Blues ensembles, countless rock groups and studied the theory and mathematics of music as long as I have in my young 23 years of age you can come talk to me about "taste" and growing up. I promise I'll even sit on your lap grandpa.
@paresmi I`m sure you think you have a valid point. If tuneless, timing based classical music is a yardstick i`ll stick with delta blues and classic rock. Youre entitled to your opinion but if you had any maturity you would have made a constructive comment and not sought to engender ridicule. The palamino is excellent and a bargain. so is the as73 (see also washburn hb35)
@abergreg Last time I checked calling someone deaf wasn't considered constructive. I just thought the comment was unnecessary and you should have taken your own advice before you put down his playing.
@paresmi Youve missed the point (again) yours is a matter of personal taste. My comment is that its so bad in parts i cant understand why it was uploaded. Surely your ears tell you "its so bad here and there i should do it again" and i should probably work out what works and what doesnt.
@abergreg I just want to throw this in there. Even though we had our bashes this guy is a cool dude. So i guess this is a note to encourage youtube fights to make good acquaintances? haha! Thanks again for the vid Matti!
@abergreg and I completely agree we have a right to our own opinion and taste. And even though I started blabbing on about how much better my taste is I still honestly believe no one has better taste than their own. And I obviously came from a different place in music, I can hear and appreciate the tune of a symphony but also appreciate the raw emotion in a 3 note blues lick. But anyways thanks for your thoughts on the palamino. I was also looking at used mesa boogie .50 calibers. any thoughts?
Nice playing and nice guitar! Did you try other Artcore guitars before settling on the AS73? I'm looking into getting one but I'm not sure which model yet.

Whats with all the patronizing comments?
This dude is quite obviously a good guitarist! 'Off Key'?
Have you ever listened to real jazz, most of the guitar lead work is completely atonal!

Thumbs up for explaining the equipment you use though. I always appreciate seeing what configurations various people use.

It's a really soft sound in that guitar, I love it.
You have to play a Steely Dan tune with it.
