@princessmelody7 Can't open that window. It's fixed! Actually, you can't open any of the windows on that side of the house. And besides that, the hornets are gone, now. They were only there for 1 season. Hornets don't come back to the same nest the next year. New queens go underground for winter, hibernate, and make a new nest the next year. Guess they decided to go somewhere else this past season! LOL We left the nest though for wonderful memories.
Your right that is very cool! I would have done the same thing, taken some nice close up still pics and a nice little video.....right before i eradicated them with a can of raid.
@killertoad You wouldn't have called pest control if you had seen how tenderly they were tending to their young -- and if you had taken the time to see how docile they were. Hornets don't attack unless they feel threatened. If humans would only stop to understand nature, this whole world would be a lot better off.
@sugarfoottevis You would have called pest control if your kid was playing in the backyard and suddenly the hornets deemed him/her "threatening", even though they chose to build their hive in YOUR property. Let's be honest, hornets aren't known for their "docile" nature. It's still well within the cycle of life for humans to get rid of Hornets, especially when they choose to breed in our territory. You wouldn't build a house next to a Hornet's nest and expect nothing to happen.
@killertoad It is rare that hornets would build a nest on a window like this to give humans a glimpse into their society. Being able to look into their nest gave me a different of view of what I though hornets were about. I filmed very close to the nest and they never felt threatened. We witnessed a miracle of nature that most will never have the opportunity to see. The nest was in a low traffic area. Adults & children enjoyed watching them and everybody lived happily ever after!
At first you think its cool and let them live there... Then they get in your house, eat your food, use all the hot water, and play loud music. Its a matter of time...
Honestly, why would you leave this thing on your house? It's nothing but a huge health and safety hazard to you and your immediate family. But it is "COO" I must admit. LOL
you know what i would do take pepper spray and aerosol spray mix it put it in a spray bottle and take a candle lighter and just spray with the lighter right in front run after wards & dont come back
WOW! How interesting! So what happened to them? Did they leave after fall? I think its so cool of you to have left the nest up, kudos to you! Much respect from Dallas, Texas!
i tought u were from south park i love that show but how can u sound like cartman well i guess accents r kinda close at first i tought u wer austrailian but know i remembered what australian sounds like
What's going on with the South Park thing? Several people have commented about me sounding like Cartmen. The only thing I can tell you all is that Cartmen must be from Alabama.Yes, I live in Wyoming, now. But the accent is Alabama. And if you all listen close, I'm not saying "coo". I'm pronouncing that dang L at the end! LOL :) Any Alabamian would back me up!
Most of the hornets in that hive are female just as it would be in a wasphive beehive and even in a anthill and a termite nest, you have the infertile workers and the Queen who by herself lays several thousand eggs each week. the males (the Drones or Kings if you prefer) dont really serve much purpose other then mating with a future queen, they die soon after that.
Wow.. and up in Dubois!! It's neat how thet do that. The other day I found a hornets comb on the sidewalk and brought it in. No Hornets in there tho, but interesting to stare at the hexagonal chambers that are on it :)
I had multiple yellow jacket nests on every shutter of my house! This summer we had to take the shutters down to paint the house. . .when we pulled down one of them, there was a very large nest, that was stuck to the house. There were 40 wasps in there and oh boy were they MAD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
That is totally cool its nice that the nest was in a good spot and I like people like you who care about wasps. Bald-faced Hornets practically eat their weight in annoying flies that would otherwise be a pesky problem. Thanks for uploading
if i had that on my window i would take like a spot light and just shine it on there nest and hurt the bees or take like a 200mw laser pointer and hurt them also i hate bees any type of them hornets or bees.
All I can say is WOW! You do have a very rare oppertunity to be front row observers of nature at it's best. Leave them alone and you will be rewarded with a once in a lifetime show!
it's NOT cool.! they take wood substances from your house to build their nest genius!! and it's NOT cool when they sting you then you collapse to the ground by suffering shock
I wonder if the light is harmful to the grubs or if the half of the nest doesnt insulate heat properly .
Here in germany they are rare and under protection . We need a permission by local authorities to hire a specialist that will move their home to another place :)
Well, you also could use a shovel ... how big it grew in the end ? Did you see the queen ?
The light didn't seem to bother the grubs. They thrived and grew into hornets and expanded the nest, which got really big. These hornets are called "bald-faced" or "white-faced" hornets and are only found in North America. They are very common and are not true hornets like the ones you have in Europe. Different genus. They are a type of yellow-jacket. They were very docile and did not bother anyone, but of course, no one messed with the nest!
