Hey! so i asked a friend of mine to help me pick out a solo for next years competion..now, he is a sax player..he picked it out for me and i LOVE it! i am planing on playing it next year at solo and ensemble as a sophmore..wish me luck! im gonna try to memorize it!
As a fellow flute player, I'd say the only critique I would have is to control your air stream a bit more specifically when you have those jumps. But your tune is fantastic. And your vibrato is even better. That's very cool that you just picked up flute for fun. You're a fantastic player. Really. :]
You really have some great things going for you. Your vibrato is great for this piece. Just don't be afraid of putting yourself into the music. Play more than just what's on the page. Let yourself develope a musical interpritation, then your audience will truely ejoy (and be impressed by) your playing. Keep up the good work!
and i have no idea what people mean but i agree you dont show that much of a passion for this song, but idk dont listen to me i am only in Middle School! haha! so yeah i still have alot to learn.
It was a little rushed in 2 or 3 sections, it needed more dynamic contrast. And the last 10 seconds or so of the song, at the end of the piece it should say to die away. The dying away sound isn't present because you put vibrato into it. Vibrato shouldn't be put on everything too, just the points that might call for the most expression. I'm sure you fixed some of these though. Beautiful vibrato ;).
your vibrato is really good. no offense, but i think that you have no expression or passion in it. i dont feel what debussy was trying to express in this piece and always exaggerate this song. its supposed to be meaningful (: like a poem. its telling a story.
You have a lot of whas in your sound. The pitch drops quite a lot. When i played this for solo and enemble i went a little faster but thats the beauty of this song you can go your own speed. Nice job though It is a challenging song
wow, you are absolutely amazing! this is the best i've heard syrinx in. . .well it's the best i've heard! your tone is amazing! everything is really just fantastic!
it's suprising that ou have such a beautiful tone, as your main instrument is oboe. Wow, kudos! Normally the emboucher used for oboe ruins the ebmoucher needed for flute.
well Flute was actually my first instrument, and when I started oboe, it fit me a little better, but I never stop playing the flute still :) Thanks for the nice comment!! :D
I thought I would share the intro my daughter wrote for this piece- In Greek mythology, Pan was a half goat, half man god who ruled over the woods and pastures of Arcadia. Returning from hunting one day, he spotted a beautiful wood nymph named Syrinx. Unfortunately for him, she proclaimed herself a virgin for life and fled as her pursued her. Syrinx came to the Landon River, and no longer able to escape from Pan, she asked the water nymphs to change her form.
Just as Pan laid hands on her, she turned into river reeds. Knowing the reeds were once lovely Syrinx, the grief stricken Pan, longing to hold her, cut the reeds into different lengths, fastened them together and named the instrument, Syrinx. Now it's called the Pan flute, after the god himself.
Claude Dubussey wrote "Syrinx" based on Pan's lament over losing his love. Written in 1913, it was the first unaccompanied flute solo of the 20th century, an important piece in flute repertoire.
Your video of "Syrinx" was the first one my 11th grade daughter saw. It inspired her to change her solo piece to this since she wouldn't have an accompanist at a state solo and ensemble competition. She impressed her flute teacher by wanting to play this. It's a great tone piece and of course she got a 1. Thanks for your inspiration :)
If this is the recording from Solo & Ensemble contest, you should know that recording an event is not allowed. Unauthorized recording of an event at Solo & Ensemble may disqualify the performer from receiving a rating.
I think you could rush less. Don't play sixteenth notes fast just because they're sixteenth notes. Every note in this work must have feeling attached to it. Play as though YOU are "PAN", who was in great pain playing his "Syrinx". Read about Pan and Syrinx in classical mythology, and then create the story with the piece. Mark the action in the music if you want then tell the story with the music. You prove that you are a solid player, good tone, nice vibrato. Now work on telling a story. :-)
I am appauled that you do not know how to spell teh piece you're playing. It is, "S-Y-R-I-N-X" , please edit this. I think if you do some research on what this piece represents, you might have new insight to how to play it.
I'm appalled that you can't spell appalled, yet you are lecturing people on spelling. Especially since Youtube shows people when they've spelt a word wrong
Knowing the name of the piece you're studying has nothing to do with grammar. I think you should really stop posting about this. A musician should know the name of the piece they are playing, especially what the significance of the name means to the piece.
jrbrook76 sorry for my spelling error.I know that this needs to be played as a "Pan" player, however I do not play flute material much at all my main instrument is Oboe. I do know what the title means & did the research on it. Considering the fact that I picked this up a week before this perf., I think I did pretty darn well, and I know where my mistakes are. My mother is a music teacher and has pointed out some mistakes and style, as the judge did also. Thank-you for your comments though.
Not bad ginny! You've got a good tone. And, you're playing a difficult piece. As you play the piece over and over you'll develop a "muscular memory" that should overcome the problem of five flats. Your fingers will remember where to go, and you'll be able to play the piece more freely, with more authority. The tempo might need to be more even, but that will come soon. Your pauses are nice. Sometimes the space between the notes is more important than the notes themselves!

Beautiful. This is the solo I'm doing this year (in two days). Seeing as you did so well on it, can you offer any pointers stylistically?

thanks.

you did a fantastic job, by the way :] I'm going to solo and ensemble (flute as well) tomorrow, with a solo and duet. EEK! nervous :)
laurensafishy6 4 years ago
Syrinx is unaccompanied.
colossus999 4 years ago
Syrinx was the first non-piano-accompinied flute solo of the 20th centry. And you typicly don't play with accompniment for Solo and Ensemble anyways.

What tempo did you take this at?
neviandliana 4 years ago
I took it at the tempo that I felt was best and a tempo that was close to the recording I listened to.

It was great except for the extremely annoying background buzzing.

I played a Debussy piece at Solo and Ensemble this year, too! I played "Prelude to Afternoon of a Faun," though. I rocked. I got a 1.

Betten most of the students on YouTube. At least she doesn't rush the hell out of it. The piece takes years to settle into your soul to play fully.
