I found out if you just shake the glass or bowl or whatever you're using the polish will spread.my last drops are like the drops on the tap water so i shake it and it spreads nicely!! :)
Just tried my first marbleing (sp?) I can't believe it was a disaster - as i'm such a nail geek and usually good at nail geekery ;) - the polish didn't spread - staying in one blob in the centre of my bowl. Just went into a blob on my nail when I dipped it in - gutted!!
And the taping up was such a faff!!! I'm a bit anal about how neat my cuticles are and I just couldn't get it neat around the nail edges - can you help at all with any tips please?!
@ilovemylongnails Yes - I followed the instructions - I used room temp bottled water - but some of the colours just didn't spread out and when I tried to move them with a cocktail stick it was like they had already started to dry.....
@duffyellie Stop any sources of moving air. Air conditioning, open windows, drafty windows, fans, etc . . . the moving air will cause the polish to dry too fast. As for the experiment, I prefer the tap water and keeping the rings smaller and more concise. I use less polish because I don't need to create as many rings to get a good covering on my nail. The outer ring serves more as a holder and I work only with the inner rings.
@duffyellie i know what you mean. that is exactly what happened to me. The nail polish wouldn't spread. There are other ways to marble nails without water. You should youtube search it. It actually works much better.
@duffyellie You also have to work with similar nail polishes... they all have to be like liquid, the newer the better, and try to use for example only OPI, or only Sally Hansen, cuz every polish has a different density. Also, don't let a huge drop of polish fall into the water, because it won't spread and it will end at the bottom. Speed is key too.
Finaly, for the clean up part, use a common flat paint brush with pure acetone to clean your cuticles. (then you'll need hand cream!) Good luck
I always use bottled water and find that it works just fine. :) Also, as far as brands go, it seems to not really matter. I have some from the same brand but different colors and they each work differently in the water...it seems to be that each polish has a life of its own in the water..haha My process is trial and error...just try them and see which ones work the best for you. :)
I have just tried water marbling for the first time today and tried tap water and it failed BIG time,( hard water area) will try bottled water next time as I haven't got a water filter.
very interesting experiment!!I have always thought that it was me, that was incapable of doing marble technique on my nails!!i 've always used tap water!!
thanks so much ; I always thought I was doing it wrong because it wouldnt spread ; but i was using bottled water . I'll be using filtered from now on :)
Woooah, I have always heard everyone say use filtered water, but I always used tap because that was easiest, and I thought I was always doing it wrong because the polish would barely spread! Thanks for this experiment ... looks like I am going to get a water filter jug. :)
Omg I got thirsty too

@duffyellie I use filtered water now. It is better. The trick is to drop the polish quickly. This does take a lot of practise. Don't give up!

Because i tried an OPI nail polish, that didn't spread out.
But, my China Glaze nail polish that did.
