"Oh Boy" is the video ancestor of "Shindig". This is where Jack Good developed the look and pacing for "Shindig". It is notable in that on 1950's era 440 line UK television the high contrast minimal look to the settings showed well on the screens of the time.Being on what passed for commercial TV in the UK likely dictated low budgets as well. By 1964, the exact same look of the original production values would perfectly suit the low money budgets imposed by ABC TV [U.S.]for the Shindig series.
I was in the studio audience for the following show have won a newspaper competition in the Birmingham Mercury - Tommy Steel broke his leg so they bought Brenda Lee back for a return gig. What an unforgettable experience and Lord Rockinghams Eleven in their full colour were brilliant.....wow..Happy Days...Mal Ford (UK)
I've never seen this show before and what really catches my attention is how closely the set resembles "Shindig!" in the USA - except that was 5 years later than this program. As it happens, both shows were on networks named ABC, too, although there was no connection between the two.
Brenda Lee 1959 - recorded "Let's Jump the Broomstick", her first big international hit., starred at the Olympic Nightclub in Paris with Gilbert Becaud, stunned British TV audiences on "Oh Boy!", return to States and recorded "Sweet Nothin's", her first US top ten. In the fall, toured South America with passionate fans nearly causing riots, met Brazilian President de Oliveira who called her "the best goodwill ambassador the U.S. ever had."
Thanks for posting this great video--I did'nt appreciate Brenda Lee back in the 50's like I do now--What a great voice-esp "I'm sorry"..youth is wasted on the young--lol
4 ft 9 inches tall, she received the nickname Little Miss Dynamite in 1957 after recording the song "Dynamite;" and was one of the earliest pop stars to have a major contemporary international following.
Thanks for that info ejgnandt, I would never have took him as Tony Sheridan, but there has been a lot of beer down the neck since then:) Nice that you took the time to advise me, thanks!
I saw Brenda in 1963 at the Walthamstow Granada with Sounds Incorporated as her backing group. They tore the place up. Still the best rock and roll performance I have seen to this day.
Being around music and stars for over 50 Years, mixing with them, sitting in some studios, Patsy, Martina, Lynn, Joni, Connie Francis, etc. I think Brenda is the greatest of all time.
Hey, I remember Tony Sheridan at school in Norwich! His full name is Anthony Esmond Sheridan McGinnity. He was 1st violin in the school orchestra before skiffle turned his head.
Fee-F-ing-Nominal!!!!! The finest early UK stuff I've seen/heard ever. You guys were capable of rockin'with the big boys long before 1964,etc.
Whatever became of Red Price? He is as good as any honker we ever produced in the U.S. With excellent production values, the show looks ten years ahead of its time.
American TV with the exception of the Dick Clark programs didn't have a clue how to present full-on R&R.
Personally I'd say Brenda is the best rock & roll singer period, maybe Etta James on Tough Lover or Ruth Brown, but as much as I love Wanda and Janis I'd put them in a lower tier.
I have just watched all the Oh Boy videos posted and it brought tears to my eyes. Thanks! The memories of a 14 year old boy who lived the music. I suppose the other 38 shows were recorded over. I think they used to do that in those days to save money. What idiots. I have a Long Playing record of the live show in my record collection with Cliff singing some Elvis numbers. I am not sure what show number it was.
Yeh, I bet Cliff or his organisation had something to do with his first appearance on Oh Boy! going astray. He probably wouldn't mind nowadays, but in the 60's and 70's he probably thought his performance amateurish and made sure it disappeared. Wasn't there a film of him watching himself on Oh Boy! in the 1960's? You can see him miming the shape of his sideboards in disgust.

Great to see this Video of an Early *Brenda*
But who is that Sax Player knowing the rules in those days only British Band Members could play with Americian Artists
I believe it changed later when British Bands where allowed to play in America.
It was an *Musicians Union* thing.
