Some of the best edited flying sequences of a fighter jet (TomCat) you'll ever find. The bit where both aircrafts flip over with the F14 right on the tail is just beautiful to behold! Man that big plane was graceful in the hands of a skilled pilot.

@Rattles1995 Big heavy fighter against a small quick attack plane at low level (where the A-4 was designed to be and the F-14 was not). An experienced pilot in an A-4 or even an A-10 will kill a big F-14 or F-15 every time. Same reason they later used F-5s and F-16s for Top Gun.

@stopcraponutube Nope, they didn't crash, the A-4 crossed in front of the F-14. The only crash that happened while filming was when one of the stunt pilots, Art Scholl, was doing some areal camera work in his Spitts S-2. He was trying to film the flat spin from the perspective of the pilot, but he failed to recover and his plane crashed into the ocean. His body was never found.

@Bungee22 The F-18 was designed to replace the aging F-8 Crusader and F-4 Phantom. It still does a great job at replacing THEM, but NOTHING is a substitute for the F-14! F-14: Radar range- at least 100 miles, can track 24 targets at ONCE, engage 6 enemies at once at upto 100 miles away, has a camera to identify targets beyond visual range, the only plane able to use the Phoenix missile, and cockpit was computer based, software-oriented and updatable. The F-18 needs to be replaced: by the F-14!

Viper is using the best tactics in this fight.. Viper knows how Maverick acts, and that gives him an edge over Maverick. By using the A-4's agility, Viper is bouncing all over the sky, making the F-14 have difficulty in acquiring tone.

More importantly, Viper is using Maverick's ego and impulsivity not only to test Maverick's overall piloting skills, but to secretly set Maverick up to lose because he left an ally behind.. In combat, one never abandons an ally for the sake of a score.

I dont think any F14s are single seats... But mostly I think its to help them with multitasking. I know that the F/A18 Hornet has both 2 seat and single seat variations. But like someone else said on here its mostly fr training. The F14 was built with two people in mind. Who knows why? Ask Gruman.
