This was an American epic back in the 80s. I should have been presented first on the big screen at theaters, but the television mini series seemed to be the route to take back then. The epic Lonesome Dove followed about three years later and then the mini series medium all but disappeared. Now all you will see at theaters is crap like rehashed versions of Star Wars and motion picture versions of Transformers and other action figure toys. Maybe one day ...
I'm a young guy (24) and I first saw this on DVD. And now, I watch all 3 parts at least once a year. It's probably stupid to keep watching the same thing, but I'd ratehr see this over and over forever than even 10 seconds of Jersey Shore or the Real Housewives of Whatever.
I have watched this series at least 20 times. We videotaped it when I was a kid. I didn't realize it was on youtube! I love it. And yes, 25 years later I would hope that somebody would kick Bent's you know what!
@cwood4ever I don't know how I never saw this comment back in March but i ABSOLUTELY agree with you. When I happened across the DVD set at Target I was SO excited to see that there was a book 3. I thought the story will go on a little longer and I'll have something new to watch over and over. I was almost disgusted by it. I couldn't agree with you more. It's nice to have a fellow N&S devotee. :)
@hmoorencs15 Considering it's the eighties - I think they applied the make-up quite modestly here... and I do believe no one really thought about the values in those times - namely that only loose women wore a lot of make-up.
Lets take a vote. Who thinks that even twenty five years later if you were walking down the street and saw the actor that played " Bent" that going through your head, you'd still be thinking horrible thoughts about him as Bent and hoping that he gets slapped by total strangers including you then thrown in front of a bus? No offense to the actor himself but man if I ever saw that face..god the total disgust you know what I mean ?
@Tm30w06 I know....PC is an awesome actor. However, whenever I saw him on Strong Medicine...I waiting for that "Great state of Georgia" accent to come out!
Picked up the DVD set about a year ago online. Had to. Rented this whole saga one disk at a time online via the " Red Envelope" and that was ugly! Waiting for the next episode to arrive in the mail was a nail biter!. Loved it loved it loved it! The very second you watch episode one your totally hopelessly hooked and will be thinking on nothing else all the way through. Great cast, great plot, great great everything. You could be tired and still stay up all night watching it! The best !!!
I sit here watching this again 26 years since it was first on ABC and remember watching it then as vividly as I did then and I was only 9 years old at the time. There has NEVER been a series or a show that I have loved as much as North and South. From the music, to the story, to the characters and the actors that portrayed them. They really don't make things like this anymore, which is a terrible shame. What is worse is to realize how much of the cast is gone now...how incredible they were.
I've watched this entire series (including book 3 that many people don't even know exists) once a month every month since I was 8 years old. I'm now 29 and love it as much as I did that very first time. I know every line, every facial expression and to this day it reminds me of my mom, who I lost almost 10 years ago. A true classic. :)
@reneejcrews I watched this movie like you a lot when I was a kid. When I was in the USMC back in say around 2006 I found all 3 books on DVD. I watched them all over and over again. However book 3 sucked, I hated it, Orey dies and Madelin marries George GTFO book 3. N&S rules, nothing like it but they should never did book 3.
You can get the whole set on dvd from Amazon.com. I ordered it this summer and received it in two days. Wasn't very expensive either. well worth it. It covers the books "North and South", "Love and War", and "Heaven and Hell".

I showed this series to my husband for the first time last year. I was shocked that he had never heard of it. He got so hooked into it. He thought it was hands down the best thing Patrick Swayze had ever done because he was just every man in this series.
I can remember going to Charleston to Boone Hall Plantation after they filmed this, and there was still stage props and theater equipment everywhere on the grounds. So it was really neat when the movie was realeased and you notice the different filming locations...and you're like...damn, I stood right where that scene was filmed. Although somewhat historically incorrect at times, I thought the movie was simply excellent. It's a true star studded classic!
I grew up with NOrth and SOuth........and it will always be a part of my life.......as well as Patrick will.....I cried desperately when he died....just like a family member of me died......
When I was in the Marines a few years ago they had the North and South DvDs for sell at the local PX and one weekend I watched them all. It takes all day to watch them all.
@cwood4ever I just bought the north and south series that contains books 1, 2 and 3. It says a complete series but it certainly is not. I watched the series when it first was shown on tv in 1985 and these books 1 & 2 contains alot of missing scenes. It does not show how the plantation burns down, how George finds Orry in a prison at the end of the war. There certainly is alot more. Does anyone know where I can buy a COMPLETE SET.
@margbeaton Best Buy if its not there try best buy online if you cant get it online there, try ebay you could go to any store that sells DVDs and have them order it for you.
Patrick was terriffic in this mini-series and also most of the cast too. I used to go in my bedroom to watch this series and it was interesting movie as well.
I LOVE NORTH & SOUTH !!!! All the characters are AMAZING !!! Whenever I watch the series again, I enjoy every second of it. Doesn't matter how many times I've already seen it :o)
I go back and forth on that too. When it was on in '85 I loved Patrick. As I got older I appreciated James Read more. Now that Patrick has passed away, I'm falling in love with him all over again.
