Sutherlands voice was one of the best in her well time. Clear, she is not compatible with the voices of Patti, Dal Monte, Terrazinni etc., but this voices, sad to say, are coming only in the distance of hundred jears. I ask : "When is coming a new Caruso?". We can compair Sutherland only with the well singers in her well time, because the men is only a child of his time.
Sutherland was one of vocal phenomenons of all time, and incomparable in Meyerbeer and Handel; I cannot abide her droopy, mooning around, scooping, and indistinct vowels and diction, which is poison in the music of Rossini. Also, she is always better in music that is energetic and fast moving, as this does not allow her time for her mannerisms.
I have to agree with the view of LindoroRossini, it is a pity Sutherland did not explore more Rossini. If not on stage, then in the recording studio where she ventured beyond her her stage roles very often.. even into Wagner and Puccini. I think we have her husband to thank for the missing Rossini? Just a guess, but it seems logical, as they were such a team.
Is there anyway you can send me this audio? I'm studying this aria for my college auditions and the recording I have isn't very good. This one, however, is perfect!
Fantastic! Joan has said herself however she didn't get much into Rossini because her glory is the middle high and upper registers, while in Rossini you need a thick low register as well, something she never developed according to her.
DJpiano45, don't feel bad about having relative pitch even though you're a musician; after all, Sutherland had relative pitch. I wonder why she didn't sing more Rossini operas, considering she had the style and certainly the technique required judging from this performance and her great Semiramide. I realize she contributed her share to bel canto though.
Ah, ok...see I have only relative pitch, not perfect pitch. A musican with only relative pitch?...sounds odd huh? haha Nevertheless though that E is amazing!
I completely agree with you that it's not an F. However, in defense of those that are hearing F, the E sounds a quarter tone sharp to me. That is why I understood why some here would hear F. An F proper makes no sense based on the key I agree. No everyone here are musicians.
PLEASE!!! Everyone, I have 100% absolute pitch, and that final high E!!! The piece is in A Major (with some excursions in E and D), so a high F would make no sense, especially as the penultimate note! :)
Wow...this coloratura is unbelievable. Sutherland NEVER ceases to amaze. That high E was spectacular. I really do believe that she's the best soprano in recorded history.
Serra made a fine recording of this aria, but Sutherland's performance is special. I still have the Coloratura Spectacular album containing the piece. I agree that the final high E is a beauty.
This is a beauty, and I've never heard it. I'm so pleased you've shared it with us. I agree with your comment that she could have easily done roles in other Rossini operas. This definitely sounds like early 60's. What a spectacular sound, coloratura, and top E!!! Brillante!!!
OH MY GOODNESS! I used to own this, and it was a favorite....from Coloratura Spectacular....on vinyl. The high note at the end, I believe an E natural, has never been equalled on recording by anyone. The note is dazzling and bell-like wilthout a trace of effort or shrillness despite the high pitch.

The high E is breath-taking, a miracle of natural.

I think no one has ever been able to equal (much less top) this precise high E.
It is as if though bells are ringing in her throat! Sheer magnificence indeed!

I upload the serra's version. it's "Vorrei spiegarvi il giubilo".
primu2002 4 years ago
Serra has of course the better diction and phrasing, and a great agility in her coloratura.
Sutherland has the bigger and more beautiful voice. Sutherland's High E rings like a bell. Serra's was shrill!

yes the sutherland's high note sounds very very very well; but the Serra's coloratura is wonderful!!!

Sorry, Serra is very good....but not the equal of Sutherland.

Serra's recording of the aria is indeed excellent, but no cigar. Sutherland still reigns supreme in this (and many other) performances.

in this aria, Luciana Serra is the best!

Yes, aragall77 I am a musician. I studied voice, and sing opera, jazz, and some rock and folk. I also play guitar and compose my own music.

And I am not. I appreciate that however.
