  • We got the day off from school today as a study day before finals. I listened to Rattle and Hum and The Unforgettable Fire by U2 while studying this morning and they completely distracted me. I put this playlist on and I've gotten more work done in an hour than I did in the entire morning. R.E.M. > U2

  • Thank you for posting these. I am R.E.M.'s 2nd biggest fan (after Bill of course). Could not live without these guys.

  • could be my favorite REM song ... Bill Berry is unbelievable on this song ... what a feel

  • I like this song a lot. Yet, I have no idea what he is singing about. Ok something about a harborcoat.

  • Is that Peter Frampton guesting on vocals? I mean seriously - that hair!

  • Is that Peter Frampton guesting on vocals? I mean seriously - that hair!

  • 2 people have splinters in their eyes.

  • R.E.M. were so F'n cool back then. You could take all the hip-hoppers and divas today and combine 'em and they aren't half as awesome as these cats were.

  • I live in Albany Ny and everything that is played on 102.7 OWES HUGE DUES TO THIS!!!!!!

  • Superbly awesome. They really need to release a mega-live set!

  • Anyone want to discuss Bill Berry's arms? If so, drop me a line. Starting a fan club...

  • where did my beautiful youth go? thanks.....

  • SO MUCH HAIR!

  • it has to be my favourite rem song that and these days

  • wow! Michaels hair.. xD I almost couldn't reconize him.. :-P

  • My favorite song from Reckoning.

  • I used to wear a long Navy Peacoat and wool scarf in the winter during this time, so I couldn't go outside without it of course.

  • Peter Buck looks, plays, and moves around exactly like Pete Townshend did in The Whos early shows. Even the Rickenbacher is a near duplicate. Uncanny.

  • @veritasrex66 lol I noticed this as well. Does he publicly cite Townshend as one of his influences?

His chord hammer-ons and arpeggios are reminiscent of early Pete as well.

  • REM in their early prime. You get a glimpse of their collective talent, and its memorizing!!!!!

  • this song remain me to The Smiths, even though the chorus is totally r.e.m

  • One of my favorite album openers ever!

  • buck's riffing is totally amazing. Now it just stuck in my head and won't go away. Well, whatever, I don't mind!

  • The most underrated REM song... Love it.

  • @Toph7444 Actually, it was pretty highly rated, back in the day...

  • beautiful song..thanks for posting

  • Best band in America, Florida and Texas look ...off.

  • No need to.

See: "Reckoning," "Reckoning: Deluxe Edition" (disc 2), and the brand new "Reckoning (Live At the Olympia)" EP.

    One word. Just an FYI.

  • "Harborcoat" is one word.

  • define it

  • They crowded up to Lenin with their noses worn off.....

  • fave rem song..no doubt

  • makes me weep to hear the beauty of this, there better be more of this sort of thing in the offing, or we're doomed

  • makes me weep too!

  • Oh wow...me too. Just the sight of how young he is there...makes me long for my youth!

  • obviously a pat's and bellichek fan. same sweatshirt tailor.. ~find my harborcoat~

  • quality song!

    Michael's hair is stunning....^^

  • he had long hair because he wanted to hide his acne and he was shy

  • This is.. well awesome of course! Great! I can't believe it, but I saw them for this album tour. I loved it! Yes, Michael had plenty 'o' locks of hair. So fun! Thanks.

  • Oh ! Great live ! I love this song ^^

  • kicks ass!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • RIP Michael Stipe's Hair

    It will be greatly missed

  • ah...when I got Murmur in 83, I was a junior in high school. I graduated high school a week after this show. Started college in chapel hill later that summer. Those were very good times, and r.e.m. was the soundtrack for our coming of age then.

  • I just bought Reckoning two months ago. Also, I hear saw their new album, Accelerate, has been getting great reviews. I was in the bookstore tonight and saw them on the cover of Spin which I read. That new song of their's, Supernatural Superserious is pretty rocking too.

  • I was at this show! thanks

  • my fav rem song since '85

  • i the guy singing Micheal?

  • yeah, he actually had hair back then.

  • so long ago ..wow!

  • Imagine Peter and Mike Cambell from Petty...Damn....Peter Playing those Open Chord,Stringy Ryth..While Mikes "Pickin" leads on the upper register...Just a thought...

  • It would be nice if this show should give a official DVD release!

R.E.M. at their very best. And I love Peter's guitarwork so much.

  • He has a GREAT right hand,he's always known how much to fill in - and how much to leave out...The best ones know that...I can't go w/o saying how much Mike Mills plays into all this.. I think Im bumping these guys to the top 15 shows i've seen.....Merry -X mas REMchout

  • I totally agree with you, pianoman. Peter Buck is one of my favorite guitarplayers since 1989, the year I discovered R.E.M. and from then on I became a lifelong fan.

Quite recently Mike Mills have said (in a BBC documentary about alternative bands) that Peter has the BEST right hand in rockmusic.

Peter's guitarwork has always fascinated me, he can play so much different styles and things in a great way. It's terrific. To me he's one of the greatest.

  • Thanks Robin, It's nice to see that note bout the R. Hand...lol....I saw them in San Diego, think it was 83...It was in a Parking Lot...lol...Budweiser was putting it on..Awesome show...Happy Holidays to all the REM heads...

  • I.m a lifelong fan too... great drumwork by Bill Berry on this song, i never get tired of hearing old REM.

  • REM at the top, i remember these great times, by far the best American rock band at the time!

it didnt get any more fun than this!

  • Rolling Stone and i agree "the best american band"

  • Wow this tkaes me back to a young 23 year old living in a bedsit the neighbours playing havoc on the walls for blasting this song out along with Driver 8...........what memories

  • I think anybody who saw them do this song and a few others live back then were instantly life long fans, and if most are like me, still think the first few albums were collectively the best. ATFTP is an all time great album, but nothing beats the energy of the early R.E.M.

  • I wasn't even alive back then and still think those first 4 IRS albums are their best ever albums

  • @GlueyPorch The IRS years in general are superior to the Warner years. Still, I would have to say that "Automatic for the People" is REM's crowning achievment.

  • This is Peter Buck doing is best work.

  • I think this is my favorite song by REM

  • REM at their best

  • R-E-A-C-T

  • Its great to see the original lineup playing together. Man...hearing "Harborcoat" brings me back to my college days. We lived for socializing, dancing, and music. Not in any specific order, mind you. I worked at the college readio station and I championed early REM music. These songs were great the first time I heard them, and I bet years from now people will love them just as much!!

  • I never thought that would see these soggs live! THANK U !!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • omg! this is so terrific to see. i was too young to go to this. michael stipe is such a cutie.

  • REM was totally at its best in the "mumbles" era

  • AMEN.

  • Thank you so very much for this, it's brilliant!

  • Is this Passaic, NJ? If so, where? THANKS!

  • Capital Theater

  • Is it my imagination but does Stipe use sign language on the second stanza for the word "REACT?" His older sister teaches deaf children.

  • Naw, I think you're right. And yes, Cyndy Stipe does teach deaf children. His younger sister, Lynda, was in the band Oh-OK, during the early 1980's in Athens.

  • I thought so! I watched the video over several times and yeah, he is signing the letters. Must be a hard job to teach deaf children to sign when you can hear yourself. A lot of patience too.

  • I learned Oh-Ok's recordings were compiled for a cd retrospective...I'mnna have to pick it up.

  • I got that very CD right here in front of me! xD I had to order it online, though...it's wicked hard to find in stores.

  • "...metal shivs on wood pushed through our backs..." No one wrote lyrics like this in the early 80s. R.E.M. was unique and that is why I loved them and I still love them now!

  • All these videos surfacing! Awesome!! I play guitar in a Beatles, Stones, Who cover band but I've got me a Jet-Glo Rick 360 on order for a kick ass REM cover band featuring me as Peter.

  • One of Mike's best bass lines!

  • This is the GREATEST! Thanks for posting it.

  • This is THE SHIT!

  • You found a way to post these again!! Thank you!!! "...Metal shivs in wood pushed through our backs..." Great song!! Thank you for putting these back up!

  • i sure do wish they'd bring this song back into some of their live performances

  • I agree. But they most likely will never play it live again. I had read somewhere that Peter refuses to play this song live for some reason, which is a shame because it's such a great song.

  • NICE VID!!! R.E.M. at their best!
