Vmartin70EZ......First, sober up before posting comments. Second, Hybrid Ice has been around since 1969. Hybrid Ice wrote this song and have been playing it since the early eighties. Hybrid Ice play actual instruments. Boston broke out in 1976 with a nice sound, mostly created by synthesizers...they are more programmers than musicians.
Your childish rants and youthful display of ignorance bring nothing to the discussion here.
But I wish you well and hope you find peace in the music.
Fuck you! if you don't agree Boston rules! and you are not gonna try to change musical history just because you're sympathetic to their short comings..Hybrid Ice.. they had the all 90s to make their argument I don't see them doing it now who the fuck is hybrid ice anyway?????
sorry but Bostons version blows this one out of the water maybe because their sound is more advanced Hybrid Ice I listened to their version but got no goose bumps sorry dudes but Boston made this song!
just heard this for the the 1st time..was listening to bostons 'my fav' band,' and found out about this...after all these years i never knew...well thanks boston for turning me on to another fantastic band, these guys are great, H,I, rocks..like both versions, thanks for writing the song though hybrid ice!
Definitely better than Boston's. But don't forget that Boston is the better known band, and this fact won't be forgotten. Both songs are superb, and I've heard Boston's first in my childhood. Don't fight against each other. Both are great. Don't fight each other. Just listen.
My wife and I have partied with these guys.... And I remember when they won the rock to riches contest.....Back in the 80's.......They have the sound like Boston......I love Boston, take nothing fro them....But you have to admit, Hybrid Ice ROCKS.....
@MrUndrtkr A little boston, little styx, little triumph and a little reo speedwagon, it's a shame they never achieved the fame of those groups. It's good that they came out of retirement a couple years back and are still rockin', playing in Lock Haven tonight. Growing up in central PA during the 80's, Kix and Hybrid Ice were the shit!
Your right they mangled this song on Walk On. At least it wouldve sounded somewhat better with Brad Delp singing. Live Brad does sing it and it sounds really good.
We used to go Hybrid Ice when they played at Al's in the Danville area...back in the 80s. Anybody remember the band "Tyrant"? They played GREAT heavy metal...lots of Judas Priest material...they were out of Millville.
Boston would be so lucky to have the Hybrid Ice vocals on their version. These guys were at Network 20+ years ago. D.S. from Renovo, PA talked these guys up for years and for good reason. Gotta love You Tube for this alone to see some of the classic small bands that have lived for years.

Boston's version highlights the the difference in music knowledge. I think it is a great song in both versions but Boston adds depth to the song. The guy singing it has a great voice though. Great song period
I remember the first time these guys played in NYC. They rented a bus to bring their fans along and put a half barrel of beer on the bus for good measure. Good times :-)
I am a big STYX and BOSTON fan. I have to admit, Hybrid Ice is a dead ringer for Styx. As per this song, I love the boston re-interpretation. it's definately NOT a cover... only the musical riff for the chorus was kept identical, and maybe 1/10th the lyrics, if that. notably the first line and a half of the riff. I really do love the riff though. so that makes me love this version. But honestly, I love the intensity of the boston version better. Still, I'm a new hybrid ice fan.
I'm starting to think the boston version would have been better received if the albumn walk-on didn't get such a bad rap. Also fran cosmo did vocals, and honestly if brad delp did it.... I'm sure it would have been a better received hit. I personally would have loved it more. lol. still, my hats off to hybrid ice. This is an amazing song as they penned it. Boston just made it more...Boston, ala Tom. :P
@AntiguaDreams Yeah Boston's version of this song was the only thing I really liked on Walk On. There were a couple other good songs on there but Third Stage was much better.
@nazzum59 Though i didn't grow up when this song first came out, i too share fond memories of this song, in particular when i heard it for the first time two summers ago. Ah, good times..!
I've always been a major Boston fan, just like Rusty, but I think they should've let Magdelene untouched in arrangement when they recorded it. I would have to say without a doubt this was the perfect trademark song for Hybrid Ice, and it could've been a major hit for Boston if they'd kept the arrangement.
Rusty, this song always makes me look up to you ... bro!
I was profoundly disappointed when I heard Boston's version. IMO Boston turned a glittering chunk of ice into a dull lump of coal. This song is nothing without Chris' vocals. And the lyric changes in the Boston version changed the whole feel of the song. My opinion my be jaded by hearing this performed too many times live at The Old Colony Inn in Lancaster.....=)
I am in Complete agreement with you. I was traveling with Hybrid Ice shooting lots of video during the time Rusty was still pedaling that song to Boston and eventually moved on to other projects before Boston got a hold of. When I got wind of the acquisition, I was excited for the guys, but when they told me they really changed it, I had no idea until I heard it.
I must say, even though we're an acoustic trio, my band does Magdelene more justice than Boston, though we perform it rarely.
I remember Neufer's Susquehanna Hotel, the MVI, the Lycoming Mall outdoors with Stonehenge and others 1982. These guys gave us some great rock and roll. Hope all are well and enjoying life.
n old friend from like 20 years ago. Hershey Park, The Countryside, York and Lancaster bars. Robert Scott still brings goosebumps. Yummmmmmmm!!!!!!!!!!!!!
this is totally difernt from bostons version and great in its own right love the insromentles and crisp and clear vocals .I can not say I favor one over the other this is the very first time I ever heard hybrid ice and not the last wow very good music mainstream really hides alot of good talent this band is a very good exsample of that!
@shreder1500 no chris is still with hybrid ice...nice try ya little dickhead....if u dont know u dont say anything. especially when it comes to hybrid ice faggot..

Hybrid Ice ROCKED the Countryside Inn in Mechanicsburg, Pa many, many nights. Boston's V2 doesn't even come close to HI's original.
