Jeanne Crain made two movies that were controversial at the time. This and Pinky. It was her diving into more serious roles than some of her earlier pictures. Critics say it hurt her career. Maybe... Back then when beautiful woman like her and others had kids and hit 35 years old their careers were doomed
Grant on the other hand didn't seem his old self in this movie. One of Crain's daughters agreed with me on that.
This film definitely came off as a parallel to the McCarthy trials that were going on at the time, but maybe that's just me. Regardless, I like the sentiment at the heart of the story. It's very good, the film as a whole. One of my favorite Grant movies.
She's pregnant, but she doesn't know it. He's her examining physician and he does know it. (I know this sounds creepy, but it's not.)
This is one of my three or four fave Grant films, and it should be better known than it is: It is a paean to Libertarian values and, ultimately, freedom of thought.
I agree that at its core, you have identified its central theme; HOWEVER, Grant's maneuver around the pregnancy issue was an unconscionable afront in any era. Also, as an "entertainment," the film was way too verbose at times. Loved the part involving Grant's friend. That would make a great story for a movie in and of itself. Wow!
I was more amazed by Grant's story of being a med school grad who makes a living as a butcher who "heals" on the side, and is revered by his community until they find out he's really a doctor.
That's the irony of it: As long as his results seemed miraculous, the townspeople loved him; once they found out he really, actually, knew what he was doing, they felt betrayed. This is extremely sharp, and, considering some aspects of the current New Age movement, somewhat ahead of its time.
Very interesting insight. I wish they would have batted that topic around during the hearing--perhaps one of the examiners could have wondered aloud how that could have occurred.
It's a typical Curt Goetz story. You should see Hokuspokus (1953) aka "Hocuspocus" - International (English title) which is an even much more twisted Curt Goetz story. In case you find a dubbed version in English somewhere, please let me know. I only have the German original. DVD with english subtiles is available.
I wish there was lines you can memorize in movies. Make things a lot easier!! :)

@laurieheartsdcx It is, kind of. There are other subplots, though.

@cholocharile Yeah, I realize that, of course. That was just something that stood out to me, considering the year it came out. :)

The Finlay Currie character, right? Great casting.

Definitely. My jaw dropped when he and Grant were telling that story during the hearing. You too?

The story about his execution, right?

I don't understand that reaction as long as his m.d. claim could be substantiated, which it was. That was puzzling to me.
