We used to do a lot of Rush covers back in the 80's & this one, La Villa Strangato, & Camera Eye were my favorite guitar solos - NO ONE composed intense guitar solos like Alex back then!
Freewill, La Villa Strangiato (the live version on Exit Stage Left just smokes!!), Analog Kid, YYZ, and Between The Wheels are my top five favorite Lifeson solo's. Camera Eye and Natural Science also feature great playing during the solo spots as well.
And I've seen Geddy come in on a lyric at the wrong time (Time Stand Still '94) and the band looked at eachother and Geddy just smiled and chuckled and the song went on and it was a great show. Who cares if he misses note, a live performance isn't watching robots perfectly reproduce a sound and motion everytime. Its a human experience and Rush looks more comfortable and genuinely enjoy performing more now than ever. See, hear, feel and experience it while you can.
@extradutyfelt1 theyre 60 actually. Theyve probably still got another 10 years at least, I mean look at the doors, they're like 70 and just did that track with skrillex.
@RainsongProductions if the member´s of rush are still playing, in their 70´s, I will be very impressed..they deserve to retire some day and relax, they deserve it.
Look guys. I'm not trolling or being a dick to be a dick. Geddy is trying to sing a song he can't do anymore. He's trying to do it like the album which he can't do. Granted his performances on the 07/08 tour were much better but if they really want to keep performing this he needs to sing it like he did back in the '90's. Even when he tries to do it falsetto he's very flat.
@nattiep Look, the reason why you and many other people who comment on this website keep getting flamed because you're just stating that something is awful without proposing an argument as to why it was awful. However, given the relative stupidity that is present on this site, I expect nothing less.
In this case, just because Freewill doesn't sound like it does in the studio doesn't make it "awful". Keep in mind that Geddy is in his mid-50s; you should be thankful he can still hit most of those high notes.
I think they are caught in a time machine, considering that each of them plays this damn song THE EXACT SAME WAY they did thirty years ago. YAWWWWNNNNN!
@tthueson Their songs are usually designed w/out room for improvisation. And Ged and Neil actually throw in variations of what they've played over the years. The complex design of the song requires it to be played mostly the same way. And that's what the listener wants. Perhaps some day they'll excite music fans as much as you have, whoever you are.
@tthueson why don't you watch the video for idk Tom Sawyer, Red Barchetta, La Villa, Working Man, Closer to The Heart, Leave That Thing Alone, The Drum Solo and a couple more. If your going to TRY and dis Rush you better know what you are talking about! Oh i forgot they played Marathon too differently from the usual.
@tthueson ohh, and i assume that you would prefer they tune down half a step like every other older band? Playing the same way that they did 30 years ago is a compliment considering that they are almost 60 now.
Neil is still the greatest. Alex pumps out the solos with ease. And Geddy hits all the vocal notes, flies his fingers through the strings, and owns on the keyboard. With their powers combined, they create RUSH, greatest band ever.
This solo has got to be one of the greatest on the planet! It is not an enviable job playing guitar over The Two Greats (Neil and GLEEEE), but, MAN, does Alex NAIL IT ON THE MONEY!! Thank you SO MUCH for posting. P.S. I did not misspell Geddy's name, that's what Phil Moog and Michael Schenkner of UFO called him on their "A Farewell To Kings" tour. I know, I was there.
Yeah for all of you guitar hero junkies out there, try playing that, that good that fast and that well executed! Alex Lifeson can shred with the best of them...oh wait der,,, he is own the the best if not the best and is so under rated and does not get the credit that he deserves from the mainstream. How sad. Anyways You guys rock! Rush Rules forever!
Just saw them last night in Atlanta. One hell of a show!!!!!! True professionals. Saw them the first time on the Signals tour and they just get better every time. La Villa.... was incredible. The 2nd set was the best. Crazy amps Alex.....
I don't know what it is they're drinking before these shows, but my God.. for a band that already plays like they're half their age as it is, they were just ageless this tour. Geddy posting high notes like it was the late 70s, Alex shredding away one moment and playing that mesmerizing classical solo the next, and Neil... well, what more can you say than he was himself? Got to see them in Pittsburgh, and it was incredible.
@zigzaghookie - I attended the show and called ahead regarding their policy on cameras. Like most (albeit not all) venues & shows, the typical arrangement is to allow nearly all cameras EXCEPT 1) professional grade cameras with the larger, removable lenses, and 2) video cameras. Nearly all point & shoots today, as well as cell phones, have video capabilities. They do not typically forbid these as they are generally not "professional" grade. Have a back-up plan if yours is denied at the gate!
i saw 27 Snakes and Arrows ahows and he only botched this solo one time. Tampa, not sure exactly what happened but he ended up out of time with Neil, which is hard to even process as a listener because the whole section is like taking a drum solo, guitar solo, and a bass solo and putting all three of them into a blender!! Wouldn't this solo make the best Gibson commercial!?!?!?!
Everyone always talks about Neil and Geddy as the best at their instruments, and Alex sometimes gets lost in the mix, but he is an amazing guitar player worthy of being in the discussion of the greats.
@SlickSmoot16 you said it! problem is that there are so many guitar players that there tends to be many great ones as a result. but Alex is the master of 'Rythm Lead" and his style of writing has made RUSH what they are just as much as the other members (who i jokingly refer to as his 'backup band" lol).
We used to do a lot of Rush covers back in the 80's & this one, La Villa Strangato, & Camera Eye were my favorite guitar solos - NO ONE composed intense guitar solos like Alex back then!

Another thing. Listen to his performance on the time machine DVD. They auto tuned his flat singing. Compare it to the Cleveland bootlegs on here.
