  • i love that this is for free and he is doing a good job but WHY?!? dosn't he explain what he does ate 5:24 -.-

  • at*

  • If you download the tabs, they are different from the way he's teaching it....and he completely missed a section in the intro according to the tabs......

  • You corrected you error in video 3 so quickly...why do you redo video number 2 and do it right?

  • Lesson 3 actually starts at 3:16. Like so people can see.

  • One of the sinews in my right thumb tore apart playing this... I cried like a baby! But partly because this is a fucking great experience :D Thanks for teaching me!

  • Parts of it have got a rumba beat.... reminds me of Jerry Reed. Speed it up an you're playing bluegrass y'all!

  • Pleeze pretty please with a cherry on top do another one!! this was so much fun learning!

  • @helisell you are my idol. I can now play up to the chorusy part which is higher on the neck. I love the sound of this song. I can't wait until I'm done. I may enter into my school's talent show and play this.

  • Damn, i cant believe im actually playing upto this part of this song, didnt think i could doit but thanks alot! Also its funny how you can see the number of view fall off as people think they cant do it

  • Thank you so much Mike.

Really clear and helpful, I am looking forward to finish all 6 parts.

    All the best,

    Udi

  • good

  • This is so much fun, I'm loving every bit of this piece.

  • This lesson goes way to fast than the first and lots of confusion

  • tab

  • I believe there is something missing in the tabs, second line of page 2, shouldn't there be another one one of those "022 022 02" bits right before starting over that "main riff".

  • Absolutely wonderful. The different speeds playing the same section is so helpful.

Thank you so much for your posting

    JY

  • I will never get to part 2 ==

  • @deeker415 yes ya will. just takes a little time,,thats all

  • Although I have been playing for 46 years now I am still not the fastest learner in the world. It really helped to get a video program which slowed down the parts I was having a hard time processing. It made learning a breeze. Since I am learning now at a much faster pace my practicing is much more efficient and my guitar playing has improved dramatically. Thanks so much for taking the time to put these videos together.

  • Only 1/3 of everyone who saw part 1 continued here :PP

  • very cool, it IS a bit complticated for the neophyte like me.. but without this type of explanation and the window CLEARLY showing both hands simultaneously , there'd be no way I could figure it out.

lots of others trying to show it step by step, but none anywhere near as good as yours Thanks again from Canada

  • Great video currently at part 3. 4 more parts to go for the whole song =D

  • you shouldnt say it's hard, or difficult and... stuff like that.. too much negativity... just slowly explain it :)

  • It won't send me the tabs. :[

  • thank you very much sir!

    nice series.

  • dosnt the man himself and others on you tube include 2 hammer - ons/ pull-offs when playing the Aminor verse chord ---- or is it me??? just dosnt sound right

  • Another tip for those who think he plays to fast... Rip the video from youtube with "Keepvid.com" (i think it was, google it oherwise) to a mp4 file on your computer, then you can play it as slow as you want in, for example, VLC. Helped me ALOT

  • can you do the same for Ulli bögershausens arrangement ? ;p

  • I just love these lessons! I've learned all of the last parts in an evening just because of you! Thanks man!

  • This is torture on a steel strung guitar, How do you do it man?

  • @Typhlosio7V Practice practice practice. :)

  • @Typhlosio7V xD

    How long have been playing.

After playing for a year you'll get hard skin on your fingers.

Then cuz your hands are tougher it doesn't hurt

  • the Slo-Mo Director softwar Mike Herberts' offers is a fantastic tool he uses, among others, that provide guitartists the easiest and less expensive way a person can learn how to play songs.

  • he actually doesn't play this song note for note. he uses easier techniques but it doesn't sound as good.

  • Youtube is the new teacher.. .!

  • this is so fricking confusing!! but i get a new guitar if i play this song.... =(

  • @minda272

Keep plugging away at it you'll get there. Mike has done a good job in teaching this instrumental. Learn each part fully till your hands know what to do before going on to the next section and link all the sections together.

  • I'm glad I found these series of videos its a piece I've been meaning to learn for ages. I've set myself a challenge to learn it to a reasonable standard over this winter and have something decent to play on my acoustic.

Its been a case of learning the fingerings of the parts so far then slowly building up the tempo. I was wondering what is the bpm of this instrumental?

  • i giv up

  • I learnt part 1 2 and 3 in 2 hours lol can do it quite fast aswell :)

  • @jayse4em You get a gold star on your report card.

  • @Lunarmoonbase2 haha

  • Leart part 1 2 and 3 in 2 days, going on to part 4!

  • see you guys in part 4

  • have you noticed every time he plays it it sounds different?

  • my fingers have literally died playing this!

These indents wont go away :(

  • @Hellacool66 hahaha me to but i love it!!!!

  • Yes, made it to part 3!!! haha

  • Most fun I've had with my pants on

  • these videos are made for you to have the tabs. i followed his link and got the tabs and no spam. its the official tab that comes up in adobe reader. you listen to this for the rythm then look at that for the notes. if yur not using the tab with this song yur just plain stupid. then u watch it little by little start slow then get faster and when u master a part then u move on. that way you learn it the right way and it sounds smooth.

  • @makennedy524

I've got this far in a week without using the tabs and only playing for 5-10 mins a day, i find it much easier learning from a person than from tabs... Does that make me stupid??

[btw I'm not ignorant when it comes to theory either, i can read tabs and staff music well, have a grade 5 in keyboards and I have an a-level equivalent in music... I just find it easier to learn tricky pieces this way]

Please be more careful with your words in future

  • these videos are made for you to have the tabs. i followed his link and got the tabs and no spam. its the official tab that comes up in adobe reader. you listen to this for the rythm then look at that for the notes. if yur not using the tab with this song yur just plain stupid. then u watch it little by little start slow then get faster and when u master a part then u move on. that way you learn it the right way and it sounds smooth.

  • u play it weird, a little different

  • HES BRITISH thats makes it that much more educational :D and better

  • I am on my best way learning it. Thank you so much, im really getting into it!

  • Can you PLEASE make one thats a chord for chord video i really want to learn this song but its going to fast for me and i keep getting fustrated. thanks for making it anyway though.

  • thumbs down on the third installment

  • learn the intro to heart's "Crazy On You" and this should be cake

  • i dont play guitar so i dont noe the notes or ever read tabs so instead i just keep pausing to mimick your fingers- and so far i think im doing great! all thanks to u of course

  • godamnit i fucking hate you, was a plane engine at the start really relevant and necessary

  • the beggining wasnt necessary. just saying.

  • OMG watching the video made me lose intrest

  • I'm sure the majority of criticism for part 2 was constructive criticism. Anyone who complains needs to consider the quality of your teaching through videos, and the fact they are getting it FREE. You are a saint! This is such a help and I can't wait to learn the rest of the song.

  • Thanks for taking the time to rectify the omission for the 5th string from part 2 Mike. I was slightly confused on Part 2 but went with the tab you supplied so no problem. Your videos are top-drawer mate. many thanks from a grateful student :)

  • I just downloaded the tabs and I would highly reccomend that anyone watching these videos do the same. The tabs clarified the confusion I had with the A minor riff. Now I see how its played ... suprisingly easy. Also the intro part of the song has one extra measure in it that Mr Herberts is not showing us for some reason! I think the tabs are essential along with these videos to learn this peice properly.

  • people are really complaining about these videos they are amazing they are so well done

  • Whoops, you weren't talking about me.

  • why does the timing sound so messed up on this? lol

  • stop complaining about a free lesson and get a life!!

  • @Legospasm

Calm down. I wasn't complaining...it's constructive criticism. You Youtubers are way too sensitive about stuff that you're not supposed to be the slightest bit offended about. I wasn't trying to put anyone down.

  • ok, i learned till 4:21 , so i am happy for today, rest of the lesson will leave for tomorrow, man thanks alot!!

  • could you please make a link off of this one for the actual second peice, only show it note by note please?

  • I second the last comment, why would you complain about a free lesson, like he said it's a complicated song to teach. I'm grateful he took the time to teach us this, I'm on video 3, not easy for me but I will not quit, and if he is going to fast for you, just look at the video over and over till you get it. Now stop complaining and keep practicing and if you found a "flaw" try teaching it your self then.

  • I don't know why anyone would complain about a free lesson that I find quite helpful. I learned lesson 1, 2 and 3 years ago by ear and have stopped because it sounded more complicated further into the song but vowed to learn it before I die. And now all of the answers are right here. If he is going too fast, rewind! I'm grateful this is available...and again, for free!

    Thanks!

  • Yeah, right around 2:45 it is quite confusing as to which strings are plucked with the right fingers and which strings the left fingers are holding at the same time and the segue into the next part. He just seemed to picked up speed there compared to the previous lessons. Even stopping and rewinding hasn't done much for me here.

Nevertheless, I have been goofing off with this for like 40 years or so it seems. So it is better than what I have had previously.

  • Totally awesome lesson! Great job!

  • yeah i also ntoiced a flaw

  • 3:43

  • made it to part 3, yay!

  • ME TOO! =)

  • @davidhariri But did you make it past part 3;)?

  • I've noticed that the higher the lesson number, the fewer the views. Don't get discouraged and don't be a quiter!

  • he odes it way too fast

  • Very confusing. The explanation is a bit rushed. I will persevere though.

  • a pretty darn good lesson, you could however to make it perfect by making sure you tell everyone the strings you are playing on the guitar after or before or both times when you play a small section, it would help a lot instead of having to work the strings and frets you havnt mentioned by yourself

    thx

  • Nice piece. although there is a subtle error in his intro on 26sec. Here he plays the D and G string but in the previous lessons he explained the G and B string should be played. Het played G-D-G then F#-D-G an then E-D-G but he should play G-G-B, F#-G-B, E-G-B. sorry mike can't help i noticed it.

  • Comment removed

  • is there some error with lesson 3 ?...Can´t get it to work ....

  • He taught really well in the first two lessons but now I'm getting confused. And is it just me or did he change that really long run.

  • nice piece.. i prefer the original by mason though

  • For those of you who say that he's going to fast here's something that helped me: Watch it in small parts and listen very carefully, then go back to it and pause the video so you can see the chords that he's playing and then try to figure out that part by ear.

  • @drobledo90

That's what I do, common sense.

  • @drobledo90 am i the only one who thinks he's going too slow ?

  • At some place it is... I just memorize 3 or 4 notes, play them, then continue to the next ones. Small steps, but it works.

  • yea exactly what i am doing its been fun

  • I thought I could learn this one until he stopped teaching and just started playing, I can't watch the chords and the picking at the same time so it is extremely difficult to follow what to do next.

  • all those chords he is playing at 4:30 you already learned at the end of the first lesson

  • that part what he isnt telling is alreddy explaint in part 1 or 2, i donno what 1

  • horrible intro, great lessson! thanks alot!

  • This is beautifully produced but real wrong. I can only find 7 lessons which amounts to about 20% of the song Where is the rest of it?

  • Really good, it is perfect having the video on top of the tab. Good work!

  • i agree. your first two videos helped me get it down perfect. I'm having trouble using this video at all.

  • i agree with you mate, i got it in the end, but it was more me just watching where he put his fingers than him telling me where to put my finger, lol (if you get me)

  • hey thanks....my kid has this acct,,,

ive been trying to figure out this tune on and off

for yrs! glad to hear my ear still works, thanks for the video as i was never happy with the changes

bridges whatever, were right! it took about 4hrs

of practicing the diff. riffs to pull this tune off.

so many guitarists have done this tune..it was kinda like my diploma~ i was introduced via

chet atkins version. but after playing guitar for 30 + yrs i have my own version. thanks!

  • its not perfect, as he said - its hard to teach. and yes the tabs supplied with it differ to, but combine it - and you will have it down in no time :)

  • Thank you, I have been playing for not even a year and with your slow detailed instruction I have this song 80 % down in less than 2 hours. If only more videos would go this slow!

  • Comment removed

  • How come you don't have the 7th bar.

  • really good video, but is this version different to the Mason Williams version? it seems to be shorter before you move to that c chord part, its still a great lesson tho :)

  • ya theres some notes missing in your tutorial..but combined with the original..good to learn

  • This is a great song. I definitely recommend it. TIP: use the tabs to learn and use the video to instruct you simple pieces and the rhythm. Thanks Mike.

P.S. Could you make a lesson for Tommy Emmanuel's Guitar Boogie

  • i am not sure ifu realise but umm...u play the forth string in the 2 part video and here too but u don't say nothing about it...so umm if u could u no detal it a lil there....thanks

  • good video but the quality isnt as good as your other ones

  • Comment removed

  • thank you you do alot for people more then you know

  • all the people learning guitar are lucky. fingerpick style is beautiful, and satisfying. blues, classical, funky, spanish, latin, african. the world in a beautiful shaped box.

  • haha, you watched it :P

  • keep up tha good work mate

  • Have to say I'm surprised how quickly I've learned this so far only spending a few hours or so.

The tab is slightly off but the video clears it up

    Thanks a lot!

  • got this part down now.

  • A+ man that's great I been learning this and i think it's awesome I just got this lesson over and now im ganna practice! :)

  • please slow dooowwnnnn

  • lol I know.

  • Totally enjoyed your lessons. This is a tough song for me, but you have broke it down masterfully. I'm up to the 3rd lesson and having a blast playing it. I even had someone out of the blue hear me practicing and they recognized the song! Thanks so much for posting your lessons!

  • Wait, you really need to arrange and edit these videos, I got lost here, there are no descriptions for that last part you played at the end of this,. and come on, replace the 2nd video with the correct version, so no one following your sequence of videos has to be confused or decelope habbits that might ruin the piece for them for a long time. And yes you are responsible if they do. I DID . Other than this last part the first videos were pretty useful

  • Wait, Amirnake. this is about as clear as you can get without him playing it for you. if its so confusing that you have to take the time to critisize someone who's taking the time to teach you then u prob should take a break from music. this is basic picking. im guessing u needed to look up the A-minor as well.

  • yeah i love mikes videos i just got frustrated trying to figure out the 2nd part, i posted a nice video response to make up for it ;)

  • And no I know over 600 chords. thanks

  • are you fucking serious? i practiced that shit for like an hour and now its gonna take me another hour to undo the habit, good vid though.

  • holy shit, slow the fuck down

  • Thank you Mike - I am thoroughly enjoying these outstanding videos and it makes me laugh out loud every time I learn a new section! I am having as much fun with my guitar as I've had in years learning "the holy grail of guitar" thanks to you. Excellent job Sir - thanks again.

  • I agree these are very good videos, but it has become apparent to me that the lessons teach a simplified version of the real tab, and not only at the hard parts in the middle--throughout the entire thing. Just have to get the tabs and make some adjustments if you want to play the definitive version of the piece.

  • Lol I practiced part two for like a hour. Go to part three and find out it was a little bit off hahaha. Still awsome videos.

  • You've done such a great job. You're so clear and its so easy to learn it step by step. I love it..and i can now play up to Lesson 3 :P it's so fun to play!

  • Very good, I think this is fun, hard..9 for me )..but fun!!

  • great teacher

  • This is great man ! (y)

  • This part is pretty hard to figure out, can somebody give me some pointers or the right tabs? I just can't seem to get it right

    Awesome lessons by the way!

  • I don't know which part you had trouble with, but I got confused when he got to 5:13 which is when he does this part he doesn't explain. It's actually a repeat of the second section from his part one video. Then after it finishes the repeat, it goes on to some new stuff. Look at the tabs to figure out the new stuff.

  • Thx,I figured it out, this song is so rewarding and satisfying to play. I love it!

  • It took me a while to finally get it!!!

  • Man it takes a man to admit a mistake. I respect u even more now. thx so much for the lesson. I've tremendously improved thx to u

  • Your teaching very very well. I'm doing that piece by your lessons and am improving. So thanks very much. I'm looking forward to the rest :-)

  • u know u are an ama\zing teacher when u can teach a 14 year old kid who has never finger picked or played any classical ssongs and teach him this amazing song well i havnt learn all only up to thi vid im watching the next rigt after this post...

  • life saver man

  • Man this section is a doozy, Lovin it

  • Thanks for these wonderful videos Mike. I am really enjoying them.

  • i ont suppose anyone would mind making some tabs for the part 3 bit would they? i am really struggling at watching his fingers :( (i suck at trying to work out which string and with finger and whatnot is getting used :P )

  • I love your teaching man i just finished learning this bit and im on to part four thanks alot

  • I learnt most of this song years back, and gave in, as I couldnt quite work out some of the more intricate parts, havent played it for a long time, so I came here to remind myself how it is done and Mike's version here is more or less spot on, but hey, ask yourself this question "Do you want to play exactly like "Mike Herbert" or "Mason Williams" for that matter? because if you do, then you wont develop your own style, thats for sure.

  • Yes holdengirl51 of course it will take you longer to learn if you have never played guitar before and 45 hours is excellent going considering this is an advanced piece, some people take years to master this piece!!!!

  • this piece is intermediate.

  • You reckon?? wow you must be pretty dam good if you think this is intermediate. Can you name an acoustic guitar classic, that's more challenging than this one, I cant think of any other except maybe Paul Simon's cover of the Davy Graham classic Anji and I still think classical gas is more challenging and I have arrived at this conclusion as I am actually learning the piece what about you mate?

  • I cannot believe there are so many negative comments on here, I mean listen to yourselves, what a bunch of whiners you sound, no offence, but you could, potentially spend a lot of money and precious time trying learn guitar, from books, CD's and DVD's or subscriptions, or your own personal tutor and not get anywhere and here's Mike here who's giving you a FREE step-by-step lesson of a classic song, using a truly award-winning approach and all most people can do is complain!

  • ourtimeisonloan: I totally agree with you. Why are there so many negative comments. If you don't like it, then learn a different way, but I guarantee you all that you will not find it near as easy or understandable as this video. I know, I tried! ^_^

  • Cheers bud! I have mastered 55 seconds of the original Mason Williams version of this song so far and its amazing how much work is involved to master just under a minute of song it makes you really appreciate what a genius Mason Williams was!!! I learnt most of the techniques studying Mike's vids and then playing along to the original to further refine it, slowing it down on the tricky bits using Media Player Enhancements and without Mike's vids I reckon this would take me 6 months to a year.

  • this song can get frustrating after a while

  • Where can i get the tab?

  • ..said. I dont want to seem like I'm nit-picking but id happily email you the version i have by mason williams and even the location that i got some good tab online. However, i think your split screen videos are a really good idea and your teaching is methodical and straight forward & has helped me with other parts of this piece. Partly i guess, once you know a piece one way it can be difficult to listen to a different interpretation on my part. But that E string, im really sure about. :-)

  • Hi. I think what you are doing on here is really great in teaching people and I don't want to be nit-picking but I dont think you are playing this correctly, or at least the way mason williams wrote it. Small things, such as; In section one you almost seem to perform a rake on the strings with the speed of the 4th-5th & 6th notes. In the opening here after the step down in the (123 123 123 bit that starts on the bass G, G-flat, E),you play an open A string when it should be the open E. Like i..

  • Great lesson but it was a bit too fast for me to be honest. But everything else was great

  • Yah this song is pretty fast lol. but you'll love it tho, once you finish learning it.

  • Yer it's fun to play what I have learned so far but yer I think it will be too.

  • where do u get the tabs? gr8 lesson by the way

  • i meant three parts...i'm sorry !

  • awesome lesson helisell

  • thanks so much for making this available ... I learned a really bad version 30 years ago and now it sounds incredible with your teaching. great job and thanks again

  • Can someone give me the tabs he's using. Sometimes its hard to understand what he's doing.

  • yeah seriously, cut the man a break. he doesn't have to do shit. its not like you're paying for it so you should feel lucky he's teaching you this out of his spare time. if theres a little fuck ups, and you dont like it, learn it yourself. it was very helpful to me :)

  • Is it normal that I've been playing for 2 months and I learnt part 1-2-3-4 in 4 hours? Seriously this is not a joke I just want to know if it's the same for you guys?

  • "I just want to know if it's the same for you guys?"

You just wanna sound like a legend and show off.
