It's amazing that Narada Michael Walden went on to produce a slew of #1 hits for Whitney Houston (R.I.P.). Anyone that can rip like he does here on drums AND produce #1 hits is an amazing talent.
Thanks chillichomper for posting this awesome track. I think this is my favourite Mahavishnu Orchestra track -- great guitar riff and singing solo perfectly complemented by Jean Luc Ponty's playing, magestic chorus part, crisp, driving drumming, effective seques around the 3:30 and 6 minute marks.
Oooh Love Supreme,Love Supreme,Let me fullfill Your Dreams,,,,I am in Stockholm watching and listening to John and Mahavishnu Orchestra....so long ago,yet so close
I used to know every snap crackle and pop on my favorite vinyl albums. When I replaced them with C.D.s I actually kinda missed those flaws. You know, those scratches were MINE.
I just don't think anybody that Iv'e listened to since this has reached this high a level of music or playing ( i'm talking about both Mahavishnu Orchestras.
@PS3xMedia Hey, Sample away...Just remember to pay royalties to these very talented artists for the luxury of 'borrowing' their music - otherwise you are just commiting theft. peace.
@bluesyinfinity u know what sampling is? sampling is taking a piece of music u love and letting it live on through your own version, thats more than any royalties can ever do
This music is not religion, philosophy or taste, just sheer skill. Take it as you like, but always remember the skill, no less than the Olympics. OK? This alone gains my respect.
If I recall, NMW was just 19 or 20 when this was recorded, and you can totally hear the Cobham influence in his playing (not to say he didn't have his own style at the time.) I was fortunate enough to see Mahavishnu live in concert, during this period and though the rest of the lineup was completely different, Narada was on drums. It was one of the most powerful musical experiences of my life. (Btw, it was the Jeff Beck / Mahavishnu tour of 1975. Beck played most of the "Blow by Blow album)

I'm 37 and discovering Mahavishnu Orchestra for the first time and WOW! It's so wonderful to find such powerful music that I seemed to miss before. It's not easy to come by stuff like this, there isn't a Tower Records anymore; I have had to special order these CD's. Thanks to the Youtube community.
Although I am a 48 year old African- American I have such visions of all of Mahavishnu Orchestra's music as if it was just yesterday.......I grew up listening to this with my older brothers and cousins who had me introduced to this at a very young age. I knew I could find it on YouTube no doubt.. Very impressionistic capture of fusion jazz at it's best.
@streetmilitary1 ..This is Jazzz fusion at its best! If you listen to drums carefully.Micheal Walden is just amazing. He has power in his playing. You never hear music like this anymore!!
@drumanjan ,,,I agree 1000%..His drumming is very powerfull and you never drumming like this on any of todays music.Like you said...he kinda playing like Kieth Moon but in a different way.If you hear hes snare fills and cymbals.Very tripple fulled.Im glad me and you love this music still...Rock on my brotha
@streetmilitary1 ....INDEED....iM also Af. Amer....I listened to this stuff alone, in the Bronx....
The neighbors, my friends thought I had lost it. In the midst of disco and funk, this stuff just spoke a different language, a different beat. Chicks did not like this music.....too technical and they cant dance to it....LOL Yes, Mahavishu, RTF, Zappa, Gentle Giant...I had em all.....in my lonely teenage room
I was playing in gig in a small nite club in San Francisco and Narada sat in on my kit. Not only did he kill it, he literally put a hole in my bass drum and rack tom by the time he was done.
One song was all he played, but he smoked it. He's a monster (and a nice guy too)!
I never get tired of hearing this album - gives me a thrill like the first time I heard it!!!!
Narada Michael Walden on drums blew me away, and continues to!!! I love Billy Cobham too, but Walden brought a different dimension to fusion drumming........
@xumali thanks brother!! i looked everywhere-for some reason i wasnt able to lift the lyrics from the song..but it shows how few lyrics can make such a profound statement!!
@HgKen74 This is not Billy it is Narada..! all respect to BC John McLaughlin - guitars, vocals Steve Kindler - 1st violin Jean-Luc Ponty - violin, vocals, electric violin, baritone violin Ralphe Armstrong -bass guitar, vocals, contrabass Philip Hirschi - cello Bob Knapp - flute, trumpet, flugelhorn, vocals, wind Narada Michael Walden - percussion, drums, vocals, clavinet Gayle Moran - keyboards, vocals Carol Shive - 2nd violin, vocals Russell Tubbs - alto and soprano sax
@HgKen74 wow dude Not even Close Narada Michael Walden is on drums I know this cause my dad and I play to his music from an almost 20 year old drummer
@HgKen74 Nope Narada Michael Walden My dad introduced me to his music at five and I have been playing this stuff since like 7 Billy is cool But Narada is unnatural raw talent Hope to shake his hand one day but I'm only 19 almost 20
@HgKen74 That's not Billy Cobham, (not that it isn't a give away who it is), it's Narada Michael Walden. Cobham never played with Jean Luc Ponty who's playing violin here as well.
strangely this reminds me of "Ride Like the Wind" by christopher cross.....but I think the latter was produced in the 80s so Cross must have got his inspiration for the lead work and harmonies of his song from this track! Both songs are great to listen to.
@angelialvares with all due respect--i find no influences between mahavishnu and Chis Cross...the main thing here is musicianship...cross is outclassed...this song is on whole other level....
Narada Michael Walden is touring with Jeff Beck folks. Get your tickets now cause it should be killer! I am taking my 17 yr old son and I hope he gets blown away like I did when I heard this album in my high school days!
well sounds like you're a kindred spirit - I too loved this album in high school and now have a 17 year old son who's a great drummer and taking off on his own musical journey. I guess we're slowly aging musos but still loving the music that got us going and hoping the young ones pick it up and keep up the spirit! Go Jeff, John, Narada and all the trend setters of yesteryear! (Just saw the JB gig with NMW at Blues Fest in Byron Bay, Aus - great show, great musicians..
Narada Michael Walden's bass drums here are deeper, more full and pronounced, and just plain better sounding than anything I can think of from the time.... punchy and clean all at once. What a great song
Definitely. What an absolutely kick arse riff it is. It's slithers and slides around and swings like mad at the same time. It's also kind of nasty and funky. Then the violins come in and it's pure majesty. Not many musicians can pull that off.
Phenomenal, I don't care who you are if you are one of those people that think birds of fire is a better album then you are just plain wrong. Visions from the emerald beyond ftw
I think it's OK to love both. The title track on BoF is a truly stunning piece of music. It's like a volcano erupting but also beautiful at the same time. A bit like Eternity's Breath really.
WOW!!! I have seen McLaughlin with and without the Orchestra at least a dozen times. He is a genius. I loved this whole album and almost everything McLaughlin has done. Hey, mrTodd1968! I know the bass player and I agree with your comments. His name is Ralph Armstrong and he lives in the Detroit area. He is currently working with jazz pianist Geri Allen, drum whiz-kid Julian Pavone and others.
Saw them perform most of this album at Hofstra University , Long Island, New York in 1975. My most vivid memory is of some members of the audience who were Jeff Beck fans(opening act that evening) heckling JM and the band as this piece began, his completely disregarding them by turning and smiling at the band and then kicking them right in the teeth with the opening riff. Narada and the rest of the band followed suit. LOVED IT! Great piece from beginning to end!!!
In my mind the visual is fascinating. I never had the pleasure of seeing him at that period as I was 9, but t.y. for that comment. I have follewd him closely & all I can say as Like Al DiMeola, I hope I can catch J.M. A.K.A., Mahavisnhu, one more time electric. Like what the old bands are doing now, playing whole albums at concerts. What a treat!!
Chills from the tips of my toes to the top of my head. Amazing on so many levels. Narada just nails it. The bass line following Mclaughin's intro riff gives it such depth. I even like the scratchy LP recording.
