  • I think that's the car Schumacher first drove...

  • I could quite happily watch Jackie drive all day and all night.

  • Looks like a bumpy old go kart track.

  • senna was a rookie when in toleman. he was talking about seasoning, not talent ;)

  • He forgot senna drove the toleman. But then again, senna could race a tractor and win

  • I love the way that, in the minds of the saintly, fascist Guardian reader, the so-called poor would have inevitably become the best ever President, Formula One driver, Enigma Machine code breaker, tennis player or boxer if only they could get some more Benefits to pay for the uniform and the rubber ball.

  • Ayrton Senna drove for Toleman Jackie. ;)

  • @bob333336, You have to remember, despite Senna's great talent, he was very young and had little experience when he drove for them.

  • @solidoperative True, true.

  • @Aussie you are a nugget mate.

    @ Crezzwell

As for Jackie's upbringing in Dumbartonshire being privileged, major fail, you need to read up some dude.lots. f1 background knowledge is poor to say the least.

    Jackie Sewart, gentleman and Legend.

  • @TheStevi555 Of course it was priveledged!!! Who the hell could spend ten thousand on a racing car when he was a young man??? = exactly, only the priveledged, most houses did'nt cost that much for christ sake! I've READ his book and my F1 knowledge is sound. It's nothing against Jackie Stewart himself it's just the same for all F1 drivers, they are ALL priveledged and come from wealthy backgrounds (with the exception of Lewis Hamilton who just plain bloody lucky that Ron Dennis took him on)

  • Typical of stewart blowing his own trumpet, harping on about "experienced" driver meaning himself. GIVE IT UP STEWART, YOU ARE A HAS BEEN! But bloody good driver though, one of my all time favourites in F1. Ha Ha But would not have been in it if not for the money and priveledged upbringing like all F1 drivers who's daddy's have got fat wallet's. If only the poor man could get into the sport, then we would see some exceptional drivers.

  • @crezzwell you telling me you'd be modest if youd won 27 out of 99 gp's?

    bullshit!

  • @flipsidedogchop Don't know what you mean, never said anything about being modest??? 27 out of 99 Gp's is impressive. But we would see better drivers if only the poor man could get into the sport. As it is only the priveledged and wealthy get into Motor racing, always has been & always will be.

  • @crezzwell well you said he was "blowing his own trumphet"

and what im saying is its hard to be modest when your that great!

  • always thought the 80's were an insane period for f1, 1.5 litre engine, twin turbo charged and 1500bhp. on some qualifying laps engines vertually melted by the end of a run!

  • bring the turbo back!

  • Very clever of Benetton to let Sir Jackie assess the car properly and point out issues which their relatively inexperienced young drivers wouldn't have wanted to criticize.

What year was this? What year did this Benetton compete? Early 90’s? Thanks for posting this> It’s great to hear the expected words of wisdom from the Scot on different cars and racing. He liked the Williams FW 12 (1993?) a lot more but that was a more recent car than the Benetton I think.

  • @soundspur The Benneton is 87 all the cars in other vids are 89-90

  • Jackie Stewart Legend of a driver very proud to be a fellow Scot of his

  • anyone got any idea of his lap time?

  • You have to remember... he was... 3 times.

  • I notice you don't take him to task on any point, just a personal slam. You make him seem even greater!

  • well, he is !!

  • i've seen this serie of vids, very interesting, especially a "silly" point sometimes negliged : position of the driver ( aka his desk ^^ )

  • Jackie is the man!

  • Quality high speed driving. His smoothness and approach gives a clue to why he was a world champion.

  • @Nomastalgic Not just a world champion, but a triple world champion.

  • when this should happened?

  • 1987

  • Villeneuve in the 80's??? He never won a championship there.

So what about Nelson Piquet (3 times world champion)?

  • And Jackie is apparantly retired!!

  • if jackie talks you better need to shut up

  • Its interesting. I have on CD somewhere an onboard lap from that other great Scottish driver, Jim Clark at Oulten Park. The camera position was almost the same as the one you see with Jackie in this video. The comparison is amazing believe me.

  • Sir Jackie is one of the few people around F1 who isn't afraid to give his opinion, when its needed & he isn't afraid to speak the truth. Not only is he one of the greatest drivers of all time but as a commentator he is right up there with Murray Walker, James Hunt, Jonathon Palmer & Martin Brundle.

  • 3 times world champion

in an era when drivng an f1 car was refered to like driving on ice

So of course he's still quick

might lose stamina but the insticts r always there...

leave Hamilton out of it though

  • Jackie Stewart is one the most talented driver of all time, 3 time world champion at that dangerous time, just amazing

  • We all forget that in his day he would make lewis hamilton look like a cunt.

  • ditto

Stewart is the best driver ever to get in an f1 car and he is extremely underrated. People usually say Senna or Schumi are the best, but the competition back when Stewert was driving, there was actually good competition like the prost/piquet days.

  • Best ever... hard to say who was better era to era. Tazio Nuvolari pre-war then Juan Manual Fangio, Jim Clark, Jackie Stewart, Ayrton Senna, Michael Schumacher......... Hard to say who would be the best... my pick, Fangio.

  • good point...its very hard to pick the best but there is no doubt that he was one of the greatest of all time

  • Absolutely, three time champion, that's no joke.

  • what about Rosenmyer from the pre-war period.

Prost, Moss, Gilles Villeneuve. Man, the list goes on.

It isn't possible to make a selection, unless you you it in the decade blocks. That is the closest you can get to select a "best" driver.

    50's - Fangio

    60's - Clark / Brabham / Hill

    70's - Stewart / Lauda

    80's - Villeneuve / Prost

    90's - Senna / Schumacher.

Looking at that, probably need to go every 5 years!!! Just to hard.

  • OMG jackie !!! Oulton Park with a turbo benetton, is dangerous.

  • I put Jackie Stewart in the true sporting superstars category - a real champion who never let it go to his head. I could listen to him all day!

And remember he won 3 world titles and never once had the best car. What a guy!

  • Jackie, a couple of years past his best in a turbo era car. EXCITING! Would anyone be surprised that he broke the record, old as it may be? JS always found a new line that matched the car he was in and squeezed a tenth out every here and there. How about all that class he shows talking about the crew as well. I miss this era of racing where crashes meant broken legs and firey disaster. But the drivers and crews were made of the extra stuff it always seemed.

  • Jackie Stewart has to be my most favorite driver of all time. Not only does he have the skill to crack off great laps, he can also communicate effectively with the pit crew into setting up the car. Theres a lot of drivers with unbelievable skill, but know very little about how the car 'works', thus they can never be as good as old Jackie Stewart.

  • An old champion like Stewart could be trained to make very competitive laps in a modern F1 car.Trouble is,and Stewart has admitted this himself,is that at old age the driver loses endurance and stamina and therefore would never be able to keep a competitive pace throughout an entire race.A few fast laps they could do but they would be tired fast.

  • I agree.

A better question is could Jackie Stewart in his prime (say, his 1967 form) with all the sports medicine and training techniques available in 2007 be made to be competitive on the 2007 F1 grid?

I'd like to say "yes", but I do not know.

  • Well I say yes too. In fact some people claim the old racecar drivers were better since they didn't rely on all kinds of electic gadgets,anti-spinn and such.

  • It's nice to hear a great driver actually talk like this and what's good and bad about cars. I see how he won so many races. :)

  • That is why he is SIR Jackie.

  • The guys a pensioner yet once settled into the car later in the video he's flying :)

  • Good you were able to get this video because I've been watching this clip a few months ago over n over. I guessed this was uploded by a certain sennaberger fan then there was a violation. But now its back again, I've been waiting for these clip of Jackie almost everyday. A great driver! Thanks to you.
