  • I love going on a killing spree in GTA IV with this song... makes me feel like a mafia classic serial killer ^_^

  • Tight and lucid. Esp. enjoying the percussion by Heath!

  • It's just some guy honkin' his horn. Check out Lady Gaga if you want some real music.

  • @MrDreamTheater2 Joker

  • @MrDreamTheater2 LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOL

  • I want this video on my C5 5MP phone.

  • maynard brought me here

  • My jazz director always considers Coltrane a better sax player. I can disagree in the fact that Mr. Rollins goes for more lyrical passages instead of just flying up and down scales like Mr. Coltrane. Both great however.

  • @JoshKinneyBro They both essentially run up and down scales

  • TOOTIEEEEEEEEEEEE I'M YOUR BIGGEST FAN!!!!!!!1111111111111ONEONEONEONEONEONEONE

  • Piano solo is fucking as awesome!

  • 4:42 is amazing!!!!

  • sweeet :Q______________________

  • NHOP was so young.

  • Bill Cosby brought me here.

  • @VespidNecroid Me too. He was honored by the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts today at the 34th annual celebration of the arts.

  • How can schools have "Jazz Bands" without requiring students to be exposed to greats like Rollins and Coltrane?

  • @80s90sPowerplay they can be a bit intimidating don't you think? actually st. thomas was one of the first songs I ever learned in school. I dont know if many high schoolers are ready to grasp coltrane changes/matrix.

  • @joosjoos i think by "exposed" he means listening to them, not playing their pieces. all of my music teachers always made remarks about how surprising it is that most kids in their jazz bands didn't know much about jazz music or musicians.

  • @mikefournier1 I didn't even get the reference until I looked it up. The living and very real version of Bleeding Gums Murphy out there playing his saxomaphone. Good ole Sonny! :D

  • Does anyone realize we're actually looking at the character "Bleeding Gums" Murphy???

  • Young Tootie looks like Will.I.Am LOL

  • I hope Sonny Rollins has another concert though he's really old now. I wish I had the honor to catch him playing on the Williamsburg bridge...

  • spectacular, extremely technical drumming

  • This song is my favorite jazz song ever if not my favorite songs ever!!

  • that's amazing. SWEET!

  • aside from all the obvious props, Kenny Drew was killing it there!

  • this is soloed on d major, well that's what I solo on! haha

  • Thumbs up if you already know this song way before gta IV !

  • @ProjectBucket I was on my way to give you my thumb up, but then... what is gtaIV..?

  • @GoliZeka GTA IV (Grand Theft Auto 4) is one of the biggest production of Rockstar Games, and one one the most popularized game in the world ^^

In GTA IV, you can do everything you want, no particularical rules ... There's also a lot of Radio stations when you get in a car, and there's a Jazz Radio, where you can listen St Thomas by Sonny Rollins :)

Google it for more informations ;)

  • @ProjectBucket Thanks for Your kind reply, mate. :-) That was just a lil' bit of sarcasm in my post. I know about GTA (I had about 16 or so when I bought GTA One, couple of light years ago :) ), just wanted to say that this song is much more than GTA franchise. But, of course, it is great when sth like a video game reference young people to such a great stuff, like jazz in this case.

    Be well and prosper!

  • @GoliZeka Thanks, sarcasm is very difficult to see ^^' and yeah , I agree, it's nice to know that a video game can teach something good (except for killing and for running over ppl :) )

It was a pleasure talking to you ! :)

  • the 17 people that disliked this video either have no taste in music or have no souls

  • Agree with 'possibly the greatest jazz video on the interwebs' - thanks for posting it - 617.000 can't be wrong? The power of Rollin's solos are always awsome as here. A young and shaven NHOP did a good job too - as Stan Getz told the World he would. Rollins always preferred 'three cord melodies' such as here but preferably with only two other players - what a powerful, technichally perfect man he was (then)!

    Jan Gadd

  • The piano lick at 3:29 is awesome.

  • quite possibly the greatest jazz video on the interwebs...great soloing all around and some of the greatest musicians ever. Been on repeat for days

  • sonny rollins was tagged in this video

  • Amazing! ,tumbs up if you got to this by gta zt =)

  • Where on earth did you even find this video? this is amazing! One of my favorite saxophonists of all time (and the one who got me into jazz, the reason I play tenor)

  • Hearing this song makes me wish that my upright bass were here right now.

  • Seeing him tonight.

  • Sonny is the master. This is honestly some amazing jazz from my favorite era in the genre. This piece just screams class. I was a chef in a Jazz Lounge and our house band played it every weekend. I will never tire of hearing the next improv rendition!!

  • i play this song in my jazz band and i fell in love with it

  • All four of these people are extremely talented, it's just unbelievable.

  • saxybair13

  • wow 6:10 - 6:24 is cool on the bass solo

  • just wanna thank gta 4 for letting me into the wonderful world of jazz

  • @GBAPCLAN this song is in Gta4? haha

  • Does anyone know where to find a transcription of Sonny's improv for this version of St Thomas?

  • amazing song

  • Kenny Drew ain't too bad either!

  • playing this in senoir band =]

  • sonny can hold an interesting improv for 12 hr no stop. he is never out of ideas-amazing!!

  • wow... 16 dislikes

  • Kenny Drew: An amazing pianist! One of the best I heard with Michel Petrucciani and John Lewis.

  • I've heard this song lots of times never knowing who was performing it. Now I know. Great tune!

Congrats to Sonny Rollins receiving the Kennedy Honors in Washington D.C. on Dec 4, 2011 presented by President Obama.

  • off the chain Happy BDay Sonny Rollins

  • Nice contrast to the "Saxophone Colossus" version, which in itself is tight in all the right places. The slightly more free-flowing feel here is a joy to experience.

  • o jezu ile dżezu

  • but jeez sonny is a grumpy bum

  • fantastic, the group just gels so well

  • Niels-Henning Orsted Pedersen (bass) and Albert "Tootie" Heath (drums) deserve special kudos for their beautiful melodic playing!!!!

  • Sweet Youth- Sweet Notes!

  • THIS IS SO SICK

  • I love this song but Paul Youngs version is the best

  • @SlaM900 original on Saxophone Colossus, but this version on

Trio Paris 1965 & Quartet Copenhagen 1968 or

Sonny Rollins In Denmark 1 (Moon (It) MCD 037-2)

Sonny Rollins (ts) Kenny Drew (p) Niels-Henning Orsted Pedersen (b) Albert Heath (d)

Sonny Rollins In Denmark 2 (Moon (It) MCD 038-2)

"Jazzhus Montmartre", Copenhagen, Denmark, September, 1968

    and on dvd

  • is this recording in any of sonny's albums?

  • @SlaM900 On "Saphone Colossus"

  • @MrGoorgorlu Not the same version of the same song

  • That was awesome! Sunny you made it look so easy. You didn't seem to break a sweat. I loved the way you doubled up on those notes. You made that song exciting and made it come alive for the listener. I hope I get to hear you play live someday.

  • Sick Bass Solo!

  • POR FAVOR SUBAN EL VIDEO COMPLETO DE JOE HENDERSON CON FREDDIE HUBARD, HERBIE HANCOOK Y OTROS MONSTRUOS TOCANDO EN VIVO EL TEMA : RECORDAME, perdonen si no escribi bien en ingles. LA HUMANIDAD ENTERA SE LOS AGRADECERA.

  • 00:58 xD

  • Thank you for showing me again how great NHOP was!

  • I love Tootie :-)

  • A Good histrical session !! Bravo!!!~ JackHideo

  • only two types of musicians out there. people who swing, and people who don't

  • What a stud!!! Just turned 80 and still a saxophone colossus!!!

  • @cdissler - I saw his 80th anniversary concert in Bologna and he was magnificent. Played nonstop for almost three hours, and brought the house down!

  • awesome.

  • JNR of GTA 4 :D

  • @Rubayat25 Haha, I've just started playing this on Sax, AND just started to play GTA 4 I will have to look out for it!

  • No hay palabras para describir el gran talento de Sonny Rollins. Simplemente todas sus obras son HERMOSAS. Que grande es, es un coloso...

  • Haha Max Roach and Neil Peart could learn from Tootie :D

  • quienes son los dementes que escribieron que esto no les gusto?? ESTO ES MUSICA CARAJO, ESTAMOS EN PRESENCIA DE UNO DE LOS MAS GRANDES DEL JAZZ.

  • The sound is amazing , but i think band's fraternalism is poor , they even smil e, that's a problem i think music deserves a good convivence to sound even bigger !

  • This is incredible! The best band all Sonny has haved so far. The definitive version of St.Thomaso...

  • If you disliked this just cuz he's black you guys are fags Sonny is fuckin amazing

  • so smooth and natural... sonny really is a colossus... but a gentle one!

  • O.O I'm so happy right now T_T

  • Oh dam, the bass tore this up!

  • @Paradox484 I always look at combo work as a competition for best solo, and I always (silently) decide who the winner is when I am listening. Here, I might have to give it to Drew.

  • anyone know if this is soloed on D Dorian? i played a while ago but cant remember

  • @josephj735 No it's not. D Dorian gives a much more 'bluesy' sound. The 'A' section is diatonic of D major and the 'B' section is diatonic of E harmonic minor, with a ii-V turnaround into the 'A' section.

  • Sonny plays so well that his sax got a gloriole at 1:27! : D

  • This is my favorite song! We always have so much fun with it at jamsessions, ofcourse we play it completely different:

    watch?v=WeHBguYtmrw

  • Missing my Biiig Daddy, and cousin Miles, too!

  • 3:37-3:40

    "Hmmm, fuck, he's way better"

  • @alexlee930821010 Nope. He's way better 8:55

  • Comment removed

  • EPIC AT 2:50-4:40 !!!!

  • We saw him last night in Melbourne at the Town hall. He's 80 now, and still blowing a storm. :-)

  • @matthk That was an awesome gig - best festival EVER!!! Hope Lee Konitz pulls through :(

  • when was this done??late 60s early 70s??

  • @atombomb31458 -- 1968?

  • @atombomb31458 I believe it's early 60's according to Sonny's style but nothing sure here...

  • Have a listen to Joshua Redman,Jazz Crimes,please

  • I could watch this video over and over again.. 4 amazing solos by 4 amazing musicians.

  • Tenor Sax player Sonny Rollins, you're it next to John Coltrane.

  • 14 people totally deaf....this is JAZZ

  • Check this guy out, great player: youtube.com/watch?v=Lrk_xrBs2SI

  • omg i love you work! i must improve on my sax skills haha sonny rollins you are my saxaphone idol :D

  • omg i love you work! i must improve on my sax skills haha

  • 1) Piano licks in 2nd chorus of head are immense

    2) How does he bend like that!?

  • What I would give just to shake hands with such a legend...

  • Aaaaand I'm happy.

  • @chargerfighter1 My thoughts exactly.

  • "He's not THAT great" 6:14

  • talking about jazz negates jazz....oooops ...sorry..

  • 08:37 Sonny is thinking; "Soon done?"

  • heh heh - love your work EddieHaskell

  • Did anyone notice that the song actually sped up slightly by the end?

  • This song has an awesome rhythm. My jazz ensemble played this at our first gig.

  • I went to see Sonny recently about a year ago and he was still groovin like he is exactly in this video. and now he's eighty.

  • This video made me a bassist. Oh wait, I did that.....this video made me a better bassist.

  • I love this tune!

  • Going to see him at Jazz Fest!!! Oh, boy!

  • Damn, there goes this brand new keyboard.

  • Bliss for the ears!

  • Sonny's GLOBAL WARMING CD is fabulous-you won't be disappointed

    April 29, 2011.

  • Suh-mooth!!!

  • The bass solo was exceptional...

  • Jazz is proof that we are not alone in the Universe. Rollins.

  • Why would someone dislike this? They clearly know nothing about music.

  • @KeyboardPlayer97

That about sums it up. If you hate this song, then you have no reason to have ears for it to bless, eh?

  • This is just outstanding!

  • it's NHOP on Bass, right? I'm not sure, I've never seen any vidéo of him so young, but it sounds really like him...

  • @FabienGirard Yes it is... ain't he great!

  • what was the drum beat on this?

  • What a fantastic version of this tune.

Thanks so much for sharing it

If I may, where did you come by it?

  • Iconic and memorable.

  • The Cosby Show- Season 7 27 And Still Cooking

  • Sonny is a god of a god :O

  • I play the bass. This guy is my idol. Period.

  • so. if someone doesnt have the chance to hear a good song any other way, but hears it in a video game for the first time, does that mean they're not allowed to like the song simply because its a good song? give me a break. the people that hate people who hear songs in video games just have no life and have to bring down everyone else.

  • 14 people don't know about jazz :(

  • We can listen this in GTA4 "JNR - Jazz Nation Radio" :)

  • @Garrus90 shut up

  • @Garrus90

I played that at a friend's house once and recognised it right away, when I said it he just stared at me lol, I always recognise randomly playing music XD

  • Sonny rocks!

  • I managed to see Sonny for the first time when he came to UCSB a couple of years back. I was amazed 1) that I got to see him, and 2) he could still play like few others, even at age 80. Fantastic show.

  • Sonny Rollin's tone is, in my opinion, the epitome for a Tenor Sax......I'm a trumpet player. LOL I can listen to Sonny all day!

  • My dad's favorite tune. Or one of them at least. He always hummed this song when he was in a good mood, it was a sure sign. He would have turned 70 today so that's why I'm listening to this clip. Sorta trying to imagine what he would have felt had he heard it. I think he would have loved how the pianist quotes Rollins' original solo from the record.

  • stupid question, but whats the form on this tune???

  • Fidel Rollins

  • I taught myself how to play this song by ear in high school. Couldn't come close on the solo section, though.

  • Last night my wife and I were at The Dresden, the small jazz club shown in the movie, Swingers. We stopped in just in time to see a small group of musicians playing their version of Sonny Rollins' St. Thomas and I haven't been able to get the song out of my head. The Dresden, on Vermont, in Hollywood, CA, is a cool spot with a relaxed vibe to check out small jazz groups playing standards like this. It sure would be cool if they could get Sonny Rollins himself to play there!

  • Is the bassist Niels ?

    Who is the pianist ?

  • @custardapple777 sorry, I just read your description

  • I could listen to Sonny all day. He's my favorite saxaphone player and its great to be able to see these videos. Thank you BluesBeBopper for sharing this.

  • Sonny is da bomb. Nothing more needs to be said.

  • Sonny is da bomb. Nothing more needs to be said.

  • I can listen to Sonny forever. I love this song.

  • im happyy listening to thiss...

  • I've heard so many versions of this song, and almost every one is devoid of any emotion - they're all cheesy, pseudo-latin arrangements in which the players have no concept of swing. This, on the other had, is sheer joy captured into a 10 minute long video. This swings more than bird. This is sick.

  • @glassbreaker5791

Only one thing: St. Thomas isn't swing, it's straight-style. Of course, if a group is playing it so straight that it sounds Latin, they're doing life wrong.

  • @chargerfighter1 you've kinda helped my point along. lots of people play this as straight as possible. it shouldn't be swung in the style of bop - however, all styles have some sort of swing to them - even the straightest funk has its own "swing". this song isn't meant to be swung in the traditional sense of the word - but it still needs to have its own *swing*, which these players do extremely well.

  • @glassbreaker5791

I know, right? And I totally understand what you mean. Every tune and style has its own feel to it, and screwing with it doesn't always go well. St. Thomas is a beautiful tune with its own amazing style, and I love it. In my opinion, people who hate it don't need the ears that it's supposed ti bless. Plus, it's freaking Sonny Rollins. You can't go wrong there. :P

  • this kind of music gets finer with time.

  • We all better listen to Niels Henning Orsted Pederson performing "My little suede shoes". It is heart warming and owesome.

  • True prodigy.

  • ロリンズいつ何処の?・・ペデルセン~ドリューとゆうと!・・・・どちらにしろGOOD・ST・THOMAS

  • snap i remember this song from an episode of the Cosbys. Cliff & Claire were dancing to it. It was so cute. Miss that show.

  • I'm sure that the pianist is Kenny Drew. Who is the Bassist?

  • @coweta19

    Seems to be Niels-Henning Orsted-Pedersen
