  • the OG's of the NBA

  • i wonder 1976 has 3 point line?

  • this is when basketball was entertaining

  • @210acer you call this entertaining?

  • 5:18

thats supposed to be the first dunk contest dunk in nba history?

  • some dude jumped over a car this year, gerald wilkins jumped over a person sitting in a chair in 86. I'm just waiting for someone to paralyz themselves. way too far today.

  • Simple Dunks....not like today when they damn near kill themselves!!!

  • @Fanik10 Near kill themselves? Lol....Nowadays they do simple shit and take like 20 tries. The last time the dunk contest was exciting was 2003, 2008 if you go by single performances. This contest is what gave dunkers like MJ and others the thought of trying it, and putting more to it.

  • @Fanik10 Simple Dunks ? Did you really see Dr.J's dunks ?

  • The modern NBA is practically the ABA version of basketball.

  • The ABA was real run and gun!!! These OG's use to dunk from the free throw in the games!!!

  • thumbs up if ur watching this in 2011

  • Perhaps the most important event in modern basketball history right here.

  • Who wears short shorts? They wear short shorts!...

Man...Artis was a beast when he was younger huh?

  • I feel for the fact that this is the first time such a thing has ever been done, but these freakin' rules...talk about a dictatorship.

  • @americanaccents

In all fairness, this was the first time it was done so they didn't get everything exactly right.

  • wow its so boring.

  • Wasnt it 2002 or 03 that they had to spin a wheel and do a dunk, this is so akin to it

  • Id rather watch basketball like this versus the bullshit it has become today.

  • GREAT clip - thank you VERY MUCH for sharing this with us!!!!! Is the announcer on the court Bob Costas (who had just started his career as announcer in 1974 with the Spirits of St. Louis)?

  • @jmccracken1963 yes that is Bob Costas

  • @taliesen1953 It's actually Marv Albert's brother Al.

  • Where is Downtown "Funky Stuff" Malone and Jackie Moon

  • @bonopoli83 i love you so much for this comment

  • Wow. What clear audio for the time. 34 yrs old. Must have been filtered.

  • yes, you can use as many balls as you want :D

  • I remember watching this as a teenager even though I was a Kentucky fan I loved watching Dr. J.

  • "fear for your lives..." LMAO!!! the ABA kicks ass. they ahd my home team, the Pittsburgh Condors.

  • man look at those afro's

  • the crowd sound like a golf tournament

  • @voltronthechef so who created these dunks Dj, Jordan, Domi, Kobe or should i say whos your favorite?

  • I was there and will always remember the battle between David Thompson vs. Dr. J.. From that point on Dr. J's poster of his foul line dunk hung on my bedroom wall through high school. "Good Times" indeed!

  • anyone now what make those balls are? I want one :)

  • this was the first slam dunk contest ever??

  • So my friend bkobra just told me how he started dunking, he s shorter than me, he s only 5 6 but leaps over 8 inches taller! Apparently he used the workout over at 50 inch vertical (dot) com and gained over 14 inches in his vertical jump!

ABA 1976 Slam Dunk Contest part 1 of 2

  • Holy s**t they ware skinny and tall looking :P o.O

  • dun

  • it does make sense for them to alternate baskets after each dunk attempt b/c the breakaway rims were about 5-6 years away from going mainstream

and then after watching Darryl Dawkins highlights you can't blame them for making breakaway rims even though they can still break...

I must have too much time on my hands to notice that the NBA rims being used now have been used by the NCAA for quite some time now

  • It's definitely Al Albert. He was Denver's play by play announcer at the time.

  • The announcer was Al Albert. I was there sitting on the floor in the black and white sport jacket, tie, and black slacks. George Gervin sat right next to me after his dunks. Doug Moe bet Dr, J he couldn't take off at the free throw line and dunk it.

  • @pjzdriver: How old are you?

  • I can't believe Bad News Barnes wasn't in the contest.

  • It's definitely Steve Albert calling this one. Bob had a much higher voice back then.

  • the announcer is Bob Costas...

  • Not....This is Stan Albert.

  • no....Bob Costas did the ABA games back then

  • Bob did do Spirit of St. Louis games, but it's one of the Albert brothers (I'm thinking Steve).

  • we all agree to disagree

  • The man really shackled people with these gay rules, back in the 76

  • fail... this is so boring

  • ABA was before the NBA then the NBA came along which gave the ABA competition eventually the NBA ran the ABA out of town then the 5 ABA teams merged with the NBA.. for a while ABA was the united states professional league, today it is semi-pro.

  • Wow...that post is filled with a ton of incorrect information. The ABA wasn't before the NBA. The NBA had been around for a long time. Then the ABA was created in 1967. Also, there weren't '5' teams that went to the NBA. There were four...Pacers, Spurs, Nuggets, and Nets.

  • @jcaudill6921 There was five teams man, don't forget the Flint Tropics, they created the Alley Oop (x

  • this shit be crunk

  • These rules were too strict. Dunk Contest are supposed to be freestyle- where players can do whatever they want. It's most exciting this way.

  • Yeah, another thing. They limit the amount of dunk competitors to 4. That's so stupid, I remember back then, there used to be like 6-10.

  • There's a new NBA formed in 2000. However, it has nothing to do with the original ABA which merged with the NBA in 1976.

  • he spent more than half talking!!

  • whata fool. this is the BEGINNING!!!!!

  • wt hell is this shit...

    it's wastin my time..

  • no where near as crunk as it is today. shit sounded damn near quite in the start

  • quite? hahaha quiet dumb ass

  • These rules suck

  • The Afro Era lol lol lol

  • wow...

  • this was the more craetive league at the time

  • LOL @ Anybody who doesn't know the ABA was.

  • this is great footage!!

  • what is the ABA? or do u mean NBA?

  • this is ABA, the black league befor the NBA

  • Well it wasn't a "black league". It was another professional league that happened to have a lot of black players. A more offensive minded league with the original 3 point shot.. We had the Carolina Cougars here.

  • it was for the guys who didnt make it to the nba then eventually some go

  • lol.. This is a bit broing cuz it was back in the day but It's an amazing historical moment so show some respect!!

  • thanks for the upload

  • woooooooooo

  • This is a great Piece of Basketball History

  • if it were not for these players there would not be a dunk contest today.SHOW SOME RESPECT !

  • I know

  • @704CarolinaBlue704 tell the muthadunkin truth they are the reason this goes on today....preach brother preach

  • no other league can compare to da ABA

  • ya so who is lavon williams?

  • *in Denver?

  • Didn't this game begin immediately after a rock concert to make the ABA look fan involved? I also like how they got an old woman and a high school prodigy as judges. And isn't KWGN now the CW affiliate?

  • $1200 for all five guys? My how times have changed. That's hilarious

  • Classic.

  • LOL Granny FTW!

  • FTW!!!!!

  • wooow you suck ass

  • 1200 dollars!

  • for some reason i just love Dr.J's dunks better than MJ's cuz its like colourful type of dunk

  • this is o.g. THIS STARTED IT ALL!!!

  • HOLY FUCK!! These dudes are fuckin tall

  • Little old Lady Worthington makes the video

  • agreed i like it the way they do now a lot better, bitch

  • holy too many rules batman!

  • i have a larry kenon card collection

  • Dunks have come a long way.

  • The "ICE MAN" cometh!

  • Dr. J and the rest of these guys provided the foundation for future dunk contests. It all began here!

  • Bro the ABA was the meanest when it was arround

  • i met david thomson years ago he was talking about how drugs ruing his life

  • David Thompson was a beast

  • Easy, man, don´t see it. Better, play with your console.

  • hi

I just want to know what the ABA stands for and why it isnt there any more?

    please answer

  • ABA=American Basketball Association.

Technically, the ABA is still around as four teams were absorbed into the NBA -- Indiana Pacers, San Antonio Spurs, Denver Nuggets and the New York Nets. The Nets then moved to New Jersey.

The other two remaining ABA teams -- the Kentucky Colonels and the Spirits of St. Louis -- were dissolved and their players went into a dispersal draft.

  • it's still around...San Diego has a team the Wildcats...look em up

  • Was Thumper Newman in this Dunk contest

  • this is the NBA 1976 dunk contest. The ABA 1976 dunk contest was with darnell hillman.

  • nevermind what i said, i'm wrong it was the other way around.

  • wow, they have afros....

  • too many rules :)

  • To you saying this is boring..you know nothing about the game or the history. This was original. They didnt practice and have years of watching others to copy and get ideas from. Trust me,David Thompson and a young Julius Erving could do any dunk that has been performed in the past few contests.

  • You're definitley right. All the dunks today are the same ones they did or heavily influenced by them. The current generation had these guys(Dr. J, Jordan, Dominique etc) to look up to. They were the pioneers so you have to respect and appreciate that. Almost everything they did was original.

  • I loved the ABA and wish that they would still exist, they were so cool and contributed so much to basketball.

  • 7'2" in a slam dunk contest?!

  • its not he height its the style of the dunker, and showmanship, almost all players back then were tall, but not all had flash and flair when dunking.

  • the basketballs are small and so is the rims

  • zZzZzZzZzZzZzZ!!!!

  • LMAO at the rules and regulatons in the first 2 minutes. They took it so seriously back then.

    "HE BLEW THE CUPCAKE OUT!!!!!!"

  • OLD SCHOOLED

  • david thompson, SkyWalker, amazing, he can jump 44 inches in the air

  • aba was cool geoge gervin rules the ice man

  • the ABA wasnt as exciting and fn as the NBA today.U can tell from the dunks and the noise of the crowd.

  • aba made invention of 3p shot

  • ABA had the players, NBA had the money thats why they could only come up with $1200.

  • "to take pressure of the backboards and rims we will be alternating sides"

    lol

  • yea that $1200 definitely had me rolling....lol

  • lol $1200

  • I was there that night and will never forget David Thompson's dunks. This guy was absolutely unbelievable!

  • Omg I love the ABA... David thompson, Dr. J, Ice Man, and Artis Gilmore forever.

  • yeah when they merged it they changed it to only NBA...they threw away the name ABA...but owell:D

  • No..The ABA and NBA were separate leagues, but they merged into one league.

  • ABA and NBA merged. This was it's last year. They invented the 3 pt line and the slam dunk contest. The Nets, Nuggets, Spurs, and Pacers are the only 4 teams from the ABA in the NBA. The other 8 are gone.

  • WRONG. the ABA ceased to exist in 1976.

  • man dig them fros!

  • why do the rules have to be so confusing

  • Headbaenga is a retard. Art Gilmore was a great player, but he was a 7 ft. center not a dunker.

  • Uhhh nah, this is the ABA, look it up youngin.

  • The Slam-Dunk Contest didn't begin in the NBA until 1984. This was 1976. Think about it, man....

  • But In 1979 The Dunk Contest Was In The Halftime Show Of The All-Star Game

  • U got served lol

  • idiot it is ABA stupid fuck

  • artis gilmore: the most spectacular dunker ever ;)

  • lol

  • David Thompson got robbed!

  • David Thompson got robbed!

    [2]

  • If he hadn't missed a dunk, he would have been the winner.

  • The old ABA had more exposure than the one they had now. But they aren't connected, anyway.

  • SOOOOOOOO booring...... :D 6:53 artis gilmore finishes with a BIG SLAM DUNK

  • cool video but it takes to long to start the DUNKING!

  • lebron sucks slew footed azz

  • God bless the ABA! And the doctor. Go Nets! New York, that is.

  • whatt, LeBron got ups yo..

  • go dr,j fuck yeah
