What a good song...It's just too bad that everyone is blinded by money and greed and not talent....You see the comments in almost every video today about how bad music is right now...It's because no one gives a shit anymore and people are addicted to bad music like heroin. Long live the hits from every decade, good music and original tunes are a thing of the past.
great, great song. It's a real shame music quality isn't this high anymore...In fact, this song is about the downfall of music lol... the big flood smashing quality and smothering it with unwanted noise
@25Grimes0 Nah dude, Peter Gabriel was a mediocre drummer for Genesis who stopped drumming after their album "Lamb Lies Down on Broadway" and became the lead singer in the stead of Phil Collins.
@25Grimes0: Uhm, no. Are you serious, or yanking our chain? Peter was a founding member of Genesis. He played piano and flute, wrote many of the lyrics and was the original lead singer. The Silent Sun was their first single, back in 1968 or '69.
@janustismith Peter Gabriel was the original lead singer of Genesis. Phil Collins, the drummer, became the lead singer after Peter Gabriel left. You should check out the albums before the "Lamb Lies Down on Broadway", especially "Selling England by the Pound" one of my favorites. By the way I was at this concert.
@janustismith No. Peter Gabriel has always been the lead singer and flutist of Genesis. You mistake him for Phil Collins who was a brilliant drummer and became the lead singer when Peter Gabriel left the band.
@janustismith Are you trying to wind us up or do you really not know that Phil Collins was the drummer and took over lead vocals after Peter Gabriel left?
@25Grimes0. Gabriel was the lead singer until 1977. Collins was the drummer who took over vocals after Gabriel left. If you can't get your facts right I wold suggest you keep your ignorant mouth shut.

This song speaks to me so deeply, especially the simple piano version, that I feel weak with gratitude toward Mister Gabriel for it every time I listen to it.
i am now 56 years old. i was so blessed to have grown up in the bay area. i saw everything from winterland to shoreline amphetheater. paul mason winery, civic center, cow palace, filmore west, ,slims, and the geat american music hall..1972 until this day. now grandma gets to fly to la or sf or sxsw. i am retired. don't ever say you don't have the money to take in a show. it will burn into your mind for the rest of your life. it is beyond the dollars. it fills your soul for a lifetime.
@jerilynnfarana That's a great comment, I was deliberating whether to see Peter Gabriel with the full orchestra in London for the second time in twelve months.. It's costly but the last one was among the best shows I've ever seen. I think you've tipped me over the edge. Thanks
I have never seen him live although I have seen tonnes of my favorite singers! He "looks" like Peter Gabriel here, with black hair. I know that sounds crap....
It's amazing that someone recorded this. I saw and heard this at Earl's Court shortly after the US tour. Now I too live in North America - Canada. My generation (aged 44) was so lucky to have and see these stars. Thank you Peter and thank you to the poster(s).
These were the shows when he sang 'Waiting for the big one' sat over the balcony at the City Hall. There was a NME interview, with photo's of the show, about the same time (autumn 1977)
Si! He´s been here in Buenos Aires on March 22nd! I´ve been there + I still cannot come to my senses... His voice still sounds perfect, better with age I´d say. Wonderful show beautiful talent!
Man, I've been listening to covers of this song all evening, but every single one of them pales in comparison to this. It so easy to forget how easily Pete sings this brilliant song. The sound of the piano alone sends shivers up my spine
I've just watched the 1978 live version of this song & i can't believe the difference. I guess it took hime a while to find his true voice but it was worth the wait.
@rickrisi me too. from the time I heard PG for the first time I didn't even know how to write in English. After a couple of decades + youtube and all, I just see that the feeling from the beginning is still the same good feeling...
His voice sounds absolutely gorgeous, although it seems the high notes were beginning to strain a little by this time. It's just a shame he didn't perform the full version here.

And years ago I was on a concert in Mannheim. And peter has played 3 hours, an we went to go.
I stand in the middle of the hall and peter come alone back and played this song. I was to make one's flesh creep. I can this moment not forget.
