I think there is no doubt, Hunt was a prize pillock. He was, nonetheless an excellent commentator. and from what I can see (I'm too young to remember him race) a reasonable good F1 driver.
It always used to make me laugh that according to Murray Walker, James Hunt was known as 'Hunt the Shunt' due to his aggressive style. Yeah right! I'm sure they rhymed Hunt with 'Shunt'!!!
Such a shame that Formula One is nothing but a boring procession. Well at least Hamilton is boosting his brand and keeping the Sponsor's dollars rolling in.
An era when men were men & F1 wasn't run by midgets in awe of corrupt middle/far east regimes and where you only get hauled in by the stewards if you're a) not white and/or b) not driving for Ferrari.
Not impressed. If Niki Lauda had done this everyone would have been calling for him to be tossed out of F1. And later in life he went onto be a hundred-yard hardman, calling people idiots and criticizing other drivers from behind the safety of a microphone. When it comes to colourful drivers please give me Gilles Villeneuve, who did his talking on the racetrack exclusively.

They deserve a slap round the face and so do you dick heads. He had his problems but he was a great world champion. You lot need to fuckin pay attention with all your what was he upset about comments.
@QuiteDrunkOnGin Racing incident, thats all Depailler unexpected challenge Hunt lost racing line, but so quick, would not see it that way since the beginning of racing no two drivers agree on causes, thats part of the pumped up adrenalin overspill of most drivers. Marshalls are not paid but work free for the love of the sport, 1st. rule with any driver out of the car get them to safety. No driver should abuse marshalls it damages the sport.
Two years on & he's doing the same thing to another marshall at Mosport. That, his holier-than-thou arrogance, his penchant for making racial slurs whilst seated beside Mr. Walker, and on & on .I've long felt he's just an idiot & this footage certainly doesn't change my mind!! :)
What exactly was he angry about though? There was barely any contact between the two, if any. Hunt went wide and Depailler stuck it down the inside. There was no way Hunt would have been able to hold that outside line around the corner anyway.
That camera angle... I might dare say I like it more than the one they use nowadays... Infact, I´ve been whatching some of the 70´s races and i like many camera angles from back then better than nowadays...:). They capture some details of the cars on the track better than nowadays in my opinion.
Those early cars... it was all about mechanical grip and power!!.. Good old times.
Maybe there's a slight contact, but Depailler was a little ahead and on the best line, Hunt should have lift off... and instead No Sir, he keeps holding on to the point to run wide and crash... and even then he dares to blame Depailler.
James Hunt: a great driver but too often a dick, imo
@illicitstill I suppose they have to get of the track as quickly as possible. I think once a driver is out he and the car are under their responsability.
I don't know why anyone would call hunt. Look f1 is a gladiatorial sport emotions run high. What some people tend to forget is hunt felt hard done by, the last thing you would do is grab a man who is emotionaly charged and angry the stupid marshal.
Marshals do a fantastic job but never undestand why they have to grab drivers
It doesn't remove the point that the F1 drivers need to get their emotions under control. How would you feel if a fighter pilot got angry and started blasting people at random? If a fireman left people burning up in a house because they were pissed at the heat or at the people yelling for help?
Uhh, he didnt kill anyone as far as I can see. So he was just angry which he has every right to be. Stop being a bitch and suck it up. He was heated and a guy grabbed him when there was absolutely no reason too. Very few people would have kept their cool.
Hunt just starts flailing randomly, hitting a marshal that didn't do anything. He's being a dick here, and should learn to handle simple emotions.
The first marshal probably tried to get his attention and get him away from the car to avoid injuries, since they were just about to lift it up.
The marshals risk their lives to keep the drivers safe - and the drivers sure aren't more important humans than any marshal. He should get off his high horse and thank them for their work, not hit them.
Did his emotions get the best of him, yes, but would I compare that to a fighter pilot just firing on civilians, probably not. This isnt that big of a deal. The guy grabbed both of his arms from behind, there is no need for that. He turned around and shoved him and then calmed down. This is nothing.
Oh well, at least I didn't compare him to Hitler - which is a great feat by internet standards!
And if you watch the clip carefully you'll notice that all three marshals suddenly react to something Hunt is doing, trying to get him away from the car. The marshals just grab one arm each to get him away from the car.
Now whether Hunts wild flailing at this point was a loss of balance (he did after all fall into the car), or an attempt to hit I don't know - but yes, he did walk away eventually.
Hahaha, well you are heads and shoulders above most for not making that comparison. But yeah, none of us are in his mind is what I am saying, so we dont know what he was doing. He could have been getting a picture of his wife and kids out of the car or something. We just dont know. It was relatively unwarranted, I just dont like jumping to conclusions on something like this.
Athaeus, what you don`t understand is that a competive racer puts his whole life into his racing. winning is such importance as to put your life and limb at risk. you want that win more than just about anything you are not going to win any races if your emotions are fully under control.
in the old days they earned the huge wage by risking their lives for entertainment now there is minimal risk and max gain, the result is boring racing.
the current drivers in f1 don't have any charisma at all. lewis hamilton seems to have had a personallity bypass. kimi is the nearest thing to a real race driver at the mo.
This is exactly what's missing from today's bullshit they call F1! Priceless! For some reason I never fully understood, marshals love to touch drivers even though they aren't hurt. Why grab his arm if he's standing on his own feet? I think they're capable of finding the way back to the pits without the hand holding.
In Sweden he's always a hero. The man who dragged Ronnie Peterson out of his wrecked car at Monza 1978. Sadly James Hunt died in a heart failure 1993.
At the extreme left on the monitor the marshall suddenly holds the left arm of James Hunt and pull him violently (0:22 and 0:23) , so he reacts against the other marshall lol, lol ...
Thats James Hunt. Brilliant but bad tempered. Although for me as a 19 year old, he and Emerson Fittipaldi personify 70's F1, with Peterson, Andretti, Lauda and of course Sir Jackie. But Hunt will always remain an icon for me and for many others. Although Depailler had the line..
Cool clip! F1 was much rawer in those days. Although some of the best days of F1 had already passed before I was born, at least there is youttube to see glimpses of the old days.....

NewYankee01 - at Monaco we have seen several battles often leading the cars to collide, but specifically Depailler was already inside and Hunt had to give up.
The french driver didn't cheat at all:hard but
correct as far as I can see.Hunt had to regret
with himself having let the inside line open.
Obv.I comment according to what is shown in the clip...
