Not all of them had timing marks. Some had a small notch in front pulley. To use a timing light I have found using Tipex or white paint to highlight the mark adjacent to the crank shaft allignment pulley notch. The timing light is then reflected from the white paint and then can be easily seen. Dont forget to check advance retard plastic vacuum pipe.

sounds like an MG Midget or Frogeye ,
PS engines prefer to run under some load , Did you try hooking up some headlights to the generator ?
