  • hi, I've just bought nook simple touch today and while its still charging im thinking about rooting it. So my question is: is it safe? xD i just want to browse web, check gmail and make notes.

  • @mufaPufaDha Killing an Android device is pretty hard, if you mess up the root it is easy to just start over by reflashing the original image. I recommend backing up your nook's image but I have done it. The Restore image works perfectly if anything goes wrong. I have purposefully incorrectly flashed my Nook just so that I could make sure I was able to recover. (I take no responsibility if you some how mess up your device, it is ultimately your decision)

  • that thing are colored or not??

  • @welson864 Black and White

  • I want this video on my 202 unit.

  • what sites did you use on the nook

  • can you make of a video of how you got android to run on the nook?

I found out how to root it but I can't find anything about putting android on it.

  • @AtheismOwnsGod I will have it up sometime tomorrow it will be for the new nook software 1.1

  • sounds like napoleon dynamite

  • @dabeshu Tina, you fat lard, come get some DINNER!

  • What were the specific names of the two Manga apps you used? And I presume you found the on the Android App Store, right?

My Nook Touch is being shipped right now, I'll have it rooted within 20 minutes of opening it. :D

  • @TrentR42 I added the apps and there links in the description. The app "Mango" is no longer available in the android market but the developer continues to dish out updates for it.

  • @mig019 @TrentR42 @dabeshu

The App mango is now back on the market, but now it is named PocketManga

  • I'm thinking of getting an ereader for manga and was wondering how easy is it to read on a 6 inch screen since the average manga size is 9 inchs.

  • here's my question how come we cant buy manga for nook or nook color from barnes and nobles.com. They said we could read comics on there so dont manga count?

  • @hyuga210 Jump is the company responsible for publishing a lot of the manga that we read today. The reason we cannot readily buy Japanese Manga the way we can buy Marvel comics digitally is basically because Jump is taking its sweet time to partner with American companies to licence digital version of its manga. It will probably be another 5 years before it becomes as easy to buy manga as it is to get scanlations.

  • Do we equate being cool with mumbling now?

  • @jemborg This is the first time I have ever recorded my voice, everyone always says how loud I am, so I was trying to be quiet. sorry if it came out mumbly.

  • @mig019 Regards. I guess I was expressing my frustration because I was really interested in what you had to say. Well done on making the effort in the first place.

I did a little acting and I can tell you that if you want to be understood, soft or loud, remember to pronounce your consonants clearly. That way you can be understood in any accent as vowels are not such a big deal.

  • Hey again, I've been using the nook now for a week to read manga/books, for manga using Mango to download and Perfect Viewer to read, however today it decided to shit on me and the thing basically freezes whenever It has my 8gb class10 sdcard inside with about 2 gigs of manga on it. Have you experienced anything like this? Pretty much when I insert this sdcard i can clearly follow how the systems memory (usually 110-130 free when no programs running) dries up and the system freezes.

  • @akelemenful I actually do not have any issues, I just broke the 4gb mark on my collection and have no problems, all of my books are in cbz though.

  • @mig019 Well,i rooted it anyway.Seems the update didn't cause any conflict with the process.Btw i just reinstalled another version of maps (google maps) and lost multitouch support. The previous app had it. if you haven't updated the app, can you check the version for me please. ^^

  • What about reading EPUBs on a rooted nook touch? I'm wondering if the improved response time/anti-flashing techniques are built into the software of the stock reader software.

Also, any ideas on getting the hard page forwards/back buttons to work?

  • @conradpaul The stock software is still installed after being rooted.

  • Have you had any problems with the update(1.0.1) b&n is pushing through wifi? i went out and got myself a microsd, was ready to root when my stupid nook started updating.

  • @timekeeper123 I have not recieved the update yet, I think rooted devices turn off over the air updates. As soon as I find out how to safely update I'll let you know.

  • I looked into it before but they are USA&Canada only aswell, they do advertise it as the "first international e-reader" but the once you go to the right page it says "Coming Soon" which is far too vague for me to wait on, and getting a kobo touch is close to impossible since they aren't even sold second-hand anywhere I looked.

  • How stable is the nook with this set up? How is the battery life? I'm about to order either this or a kindle today but from my experience with android tablets, and reading the xda forums the rooted nook has a hellofa lot of problems, and since the stock nook doesn't have any way to let me read manga I'm having quite a problem deciding if I want to take on the ordeal of constant android problems or just get the kindle with its primitive usage and lower cost.

  • @aiozolian If you are dead set on buying a kindle, wait until Amazon’s next announcement (usually in August maybe in September) it is about time for a kindle 4.

A rooted nook is pretty stable. the only trouble I ran into was when I initially rooted the nook. I had to factory reset the nook and then root it again. The battery life is still well over a month as long as you turn the wifi off when you are not using it (you will need to download a widget).

  • I have both a Kindle 3 and a Nook touch and i definitely prefer the Nook when it comes to reading manga (as long as you have a good app). I no longer have to download the weekly manga and convert them individually, and then copy them to my kindle. As soon as they are available I just launch an app find the current issue and start reading.

  • There main complaint to having the Nook rooted at the moment is that you can’t use search in the android marketplace. I get around this by using market(dot)android(dot)com.

If you do decide to buy the nook simple touch, go to a store and buy it, if the root bricks your device just return it the same day and tell them you got a defective nook.

If you decide to buy either one and need help reading manga on them let me know and I will help you out.

  • @mig019

Thanks, I'm absolutely not set on the Kindle, I used an android tablet to read manga before so I know how damn convenient these mangareader apps are, those being available to me on an ebook reader is pretty awesome. However I'm from europe so for the nook my only option is US ebay, using a warranty is close to out of the question, or expensive at the very least, while the Kindle is cheaper and would have a working warranty.

  • @aiozolian Have you looked into getting a kobo touch, it natively supports cbz and cbr books I strongly considered getting a kobo touch over the nook touch, and i'm pretty sure they are international.

  • @mig019

I'm not afraid of bricking, mostly these android devices are damn hard to brick permanently, I'm just wasn't sure that the extra utility of android would be worth it if it comes with a plethora of new problems, possibly a lesser battery life and such. However as long as I can set up a solid PDF viewer, ebook reader, and one of these manga apps (I used Mangawatcher) I'll be a happy man, don't plan on heavy experimenting with the device.

  • How you rooted it ?

What app are you using ?

    Thx

  • Love your wallpaper! Where can i get this?

  • @jahfaby nook-look[dot]com/nookfiles/view/148

  • @mig019 Thanx!
