  • Remember this cartoon came out in the depth of the Great Depression. One

out of 3 people had no job. Hobos were riding the rails looking for work &

begging food. A dime was hard to get. Banks failed, homes were foreclosed

and families were moving in with relatives. SOUND FAMILIAR? This cartoon

denotes that LIFE IS A STRUGGLE, but with determination the flowers will

bloom again, the grass will be green, and winter will be past.

NEVER GIVE UP ON A FREE AMERICA! (infowars-dot-com)

  • One little correction. This cartoon wasn`t directed by Hanna-Barbera. It was directed only by William Hanna. At that time they even knew each other. They would met one year later at MGM.

  • When my soon-to-be-20-year-old daughter was small, she received a coloring book with a videotape that included this wonderful (albeit strange) gem!

  • After the first time i ate psychedelic mushrooms, i returned home turned on the Tv, and this cartoon was on... Talk about a tripp...

  • Anyone know what that gnome is saying? All I can make out is "time for spring i say!"

  • I remember the first time I saw this,I thought "oh an old cartoon" when I watched it more I was like"Wow I love this!!!^_^"

  • This and "The Cobweb Hotel" are two of the greatest cartoons ever made.

  • Childhood magic ,this was on in the early 1960's .

  • this reminds me of Gullivers Travels with the art style.

  • MAN I MISSED THIS CARTOON SO MUCH

  • Wow, you'd really be missing something if you had to watch this in B&W

  • A Priceless Gem! The use of music of Edvard Grieg was fantastic & this was the first cartoon ever animated by the legendary William Hanna.

  • the gnomes look like muslims in a cave in Afghanistan

  • This is amazingly beautiful -- TECHNICOLOR Heaven.

  • this is awesome!! i had this on vhs when i was a kid but i lost it. AND NOW I FOUND IT AGAINNNN!!!!!! awesome

  • I used to watch this as a very little child. I haven't seen this in 17 years maybe, yet I vividly remember every part of it. It always scared me so much because I was afraid they weren't going to make it, no matter how many times I saw it.

  • Actually, William Hanna directed this, solo (even though "Harman-Ising" offically got screen credit)- Joe Barbera was still in New York at the time, and did not join Bill at MGM in Hollywood until 1937...

  • 20-06 is the last day of spring. 21-06 starts summer. They better released it on

    20-03

  • What does old man winter say? I can't quite understand.

  • WTF! Man! I've seen this great cartoon 10-15 ago. On of my friends had it on a tape with a lot of other merrie melodies, bugs bunny, tom@jerry, donald duck, but I don't remember who was that :D

It's a true classic, on of the best cartoons ever.

    Thank you for upload.

  • Bless whomever posted this..My favourite video as a little one

  • you're welcome man!

Check on "about this video" to download it with better quality! hugs!

  • omg! havent seen this in over 20 years!. i truly hope people continue the preservation of these great classics..

  • I used to watch this when i was little...we still have it on tape!!

  • Working for that guy would be a pain in the ass.

  • need to laugh a bit, checkout my "The Funnies" playlist, and offer suggestions to add on my page

  • They once showed this cartoon on Pee-Wee's Playhouse, my dad just thinks "To Spring" is stupid, but I don't care.

  • I'd say: Your father is gay!!!

But think, if he were gay would love this cartoons cos of the million colours I think... so, stupid he is!!! [please laugh, this is just a joke ;)]

  • Uh yeah, I kind of figured it was just a joke.

  • INDEED THE BEST CARTOON EVER!!

  • Even though this was credited to Harman & Ising, this was actually directed by William Hanna- the first time he actually directed an MGM cartoon. He would meet Joe Barbera when they began working together at the studio in 1937....

  • I thought that MGM still owned these cartoons.

  • Now that's much better... Those super bright PD copies really made this film look bad. Shame on Warner Bros. for not releasing any of those early MGM cartoons. They surely have good prints of them (even if the negatives burnt in a fire).

  • ME TOO!! wow...

  • im getting bombed with memories (had this on VHS tape when I was younger)

  • Oh, wow! I, too, have not seen this since I was a child. However, I was a kid in the 80s and somehow we had a VHS of this cartoon and I LOVED it. Thank you so much for posting! It brings back many memories

  • i almost cried when i stumbled on this, this was my favorite cartoon as a child

  • Wow, that's amazing usage of color. I can't imagine ever watching this in black and white.

  • Check on the text that now you can Download this Video!

Ver el texto, que ahora se puede bajar el video!

  • I had this on a VHS when I was kid too. I haven't seen it in almost 20 years, and I was beginning to think my childhood memories of that water-drip clock and the big, boiling pots of colors where all made up. I never knew (or remembered the name). What a treat to stumble on to this!

  • so glad i found this :)

  • well enjoy my dear friend!

  • Happy about you're happy now... this cartoons seems to be special for more than only One Person...

  • "TIME FOR SPRING I SAY!!!!" He must be VERY frustrated... Anyway, very colorful cartoon indeed. It brings back the days when they were good.

  • Classic.... Simply Amazing

  • i think i had this on tape a while back

  • Does anyone have Happy Harmonies, 'The Chinese Nightingale' by MGM studios?

  • This cartoon is indeed the best cartoon EVAR!

  • In fact, parts of this appeared on "Tom and Jerry Spotlight Collection Vol. 1." (Disc One).

  • it is a DVD?

  • Yes! It appears on a documentary about How Tom and Jerry were created.

  • Too bad Time Warner don't release these cartoons any more... I know that most of MGM's pre-1960 negatives burned away in a fire, but Warner Bros. at least have better prints. This film would look great in DVD quality.

  • Can anyone tell me how or where I can download this video? Thanks!

  • I love the Happy Harmonies series so much, I actually own the laser discs now, and the colour is amazing. Another good, but hard to find one is "The Old Mill Pond".

  • isn't it on you tube?

  • This Harman-Ising cartoon is almost at par with Disney cartoons. Harman & Ising had worked for Disney, so they were used to those high standards. Unfortunately, the bean-counters at MGM only cared about the fact that Harman & Ising kept going over-budget, so Harman & Ising and MGM parted company.

  • Thanx for the Notes Man!!!

  • Wow, made me feel like a kid again watching this! Thank you for posting. I want to get the whole collection of these happy harmonies cartoons! Any tips?

  • Your welcome dear, all of you send me your MSN's so I can send the video to you with better quality. I have another in my favourites!

  • I'm really happy about being the only one who put this cartoon and one of the few in the world :D I've searched for it for months and months until I found it with the help of a friend! You Thanks for posting!

  • So creative, so wonderful! And yeah, the music is simply delightfull. Thanks for posting!

  • "Time for spring I said!" haha great saying! I can't remember but I think that it was downloaded with emule...

  • I see, thanks man for the video, so if you can put the page from where your friend downloaded it i'll apreciate that, Time for spring I said!!!

  • Masterpiece. Just when animation was true art.

  • Just the best Cartoon, sure i remember, and the music is wonderful

  • Yeah, I saw it about 3 times before I did downloaded it, but before that I always remembered "that cartoon with the dwarves". So I begun to search on the internet and found some info, and a friend download it and I just Couldn't believe it! It's so magical! And the music is worderful, beautiful, but it reminds me Figaro... right? See ya! Hug!

  • In a way, yes...there are plenty of snipets of Mozart's "In The Army" that were used throughout the cartoon...and that, I believe, is from his opera, "The Marriage of Figaro." Very good observation there.

  • That cartoon used an adaptation of Grieg's "To Spring".
