When I went back to China to visit family, I saw these toilets and I just ran to my mum and said (MUM, WHATS UP WITH THESE?). She explained how they believe it's unhygienic to sit on seats and etc. But, i hated it, so there was always one normal toilet and whenever I went towards that one, my mother just said (That's the one if you are disabled).

I sympathise! When I first went back to China, I stayed in one of the older parts of Beijing (which has now been demolished and replaced by a tower block), where the toilet was, literally, a large hole in the ground. You couldn't even flush - it was just a pit! And when you're barely 1m in height, a hole that's that big is not nice, especially when you think about what's underneath :S
