Its amazing what gibbs accomplished when he came back. The team he inherited was in shambles and his salary cap was atrocious. Gibbs left a much better team for zorn than he received.

Shouldn't have had their starters in at all then. There are no asterisks next to their 1991 record. They were 17-2. Perhaps the most impressive thing about the 1984 niners were their playoff wins. They crushed the giants 21-10 and then shut out the bears 23-0. Those 2 teams just coincidentally would go on to win the next 2 super bowls. Not smoking anything. The 84 dolphins scored 513 points in the regular season while the 91 skins scored 485. The skins though were sounder on D, giving up 224 while the fins gave up 298. The other impressive thing about the 91 skins was their D, giving up just 224, even 3 fewer than the 84 niners did. Overall, looking at the entire season + playoffs point differential, 84 niners were +304, the 91 skins were +322. But the skins did lose one more game.

I think the defense would match up well to any Niner team and our offense would be matched up well to your defenses as well.

We all forget about the 1983 Redskins who didn't win the Super Bowl yes, but scored 541 points, lost just 2 games, but only by 1 point each, had John Riggins, a record breaking running back with 24 rushing touchdowns, Theismann being the Pro Bowl MVP in an NFC rout and a ton of other Pro Bowlers.

the 89 niners had one thing 84 didnt: jerry rice. Of course walsh wasnt their coach in 89 either. The 89 niners tore thru the playoffs winning their 3 games by a combined 100 points, something I doubt we will see topped anytime soon. I just favor the 84 team because of walsh and the one less loss. Plus the dolphins in the SB were by far a much tougher opponent than elway and the broncos.

I agree that the 89' Niners were a great team, but I have always thought the 84' Niners were the better team. Rice did play in 89' but the one less loss and doing everything done in 89' without him in 84' over the Dolphins is why I would favor the 84' team.

I just think the Redskins had so many different weapons, but Walsh was tricky.

Actually you arent exactly right about the 1991 skins. Great offense no doubt, but a team we havent even been discussing here, the 1994 niners:

Scored 505 points (31.6/g), 1st of 28 in the NFL.

Plus they scored at least 38 in each playoff game. I discount them though because no walsh and 3 losses, inlcuding a rather ugly 8-40 loss at home to the eagles.

Also, the one loss the 84 niners had was to the steelers, at least a team that made the AFC title game.

Oh yeah I forgot about the 94' Niners my bad. Still, 485 is a lot, but true that we did take our starters out in the final game of the season up 17 on the Eagles and had won 3 shutout games 34-0, 45-0 and 23-0, but didn't score anymore. They still finished first in scoring in the NFL. They also in the playoffs allowed only 41 combined points, while the 1994 Niners allowed 69, but didn't run up the offensive score because there was no need. Their two losses also were by a combined 5 points

Anf the Niners did lose to the AFC Title Steelers which proved they were good, but the Redskins also lost to 2 winning teams in the playoff Cowboys and 10-6 Eagles. The 1994 Niners did have to go without Walsh and had that bad loss, but Seifert had proved he could coach by winning a Super Bowl as a head coach and assisstant coach, not forgetting the NFC Championship games he led them too.

I actually don't know all these teams would be matched up well.

I still think the 49ers hall of fame secondary (wright, Lott, et al) would have shut them down much like they did the dolphins in the 85 SB. 49ers may not have beaten the skins by 22 because the skins had a more balanced offense but I do think the 84 niners would have beaten the 91 skins by maybe 10-14 points. As I said, the 91 skins would have been tougher due to their better running game and D, but if that game is played anywhere outside DC, the skins go down by 14.

I think hall of famer Art Monk and Pro Bowler Gary Clark had speed and size to burn their secondary because they did. Montana was 1-1 against the Redskins so it could go either way, and they did shut down the Dolphins, but the 91 skins also had a mixture of great runners like Ernest Byner, Ricky Ervins and Gerald Riggs. The 84 Niners were great but I think the 1991 skins could have gotten won. They had a great defense but the Redskins had a complex offense.

The Art Monk of 1991 wasnt the art monk of 1984. Montana was better than 1-1 against the skins. He beat them in 81, lost in the playoffs in 83 (very controversial though), beat them in the regular season in 84 and 85, lost in the regular season in 86, and won in the regular season in 88 and beat them in the playoffs in 90. Thats alot better than 1-1.

Some say the 84 niners, despite finishing 18-1, werent the greatest niner team. Some say the 89 team was better because despite finishing 17-2....

Still, Monk was a great target and put up good numbers then, like Clark, and both still had Pro Bowl talent. I know he beat them more than once but I was talking playoffs and he was 1-1 against them, but most of the years he beat them, the Redskins weren't good. 2 best teams of all time are the 18-1 1984 niners who routed a miami team that in their season opender went into washington and scalped the skins 35-17. 2nd best is the 89 49ers who lost one more game than the 84 team but won their 3 playoff games by a combined 100 points. Again, walsh coached 10 years, 79-88. Gibbs coached 81-92 (12 years) plus another 4 (04-07) so gibbs went to the SB 4 out of 16 times (25%) while walsh went 3/10 (30%). So as always, gibbs loses to walsh. And had walsh not retired after 88, he would have gone 4/11 and been 4-0. Walsh drafted rice and montana when few else would even give them a 2nd look. His coaching tree is spread all over. His offense is copied everywhere. Sorry gibbs was a great coach but out of his depth compared to walsh.

I'm going to miss him on the sidelines. It was a dream come true when he came back. Now I have to live without ever seeing him coach the Redskins again. :( His career will always be celebrated and looked back with joyful nostalgic eyes. The good thing is we can still learn from him as he continues his public life in Nascar.
