I believe badVWbug is referring to the exhaust brake, not the compression bleeding type(Jake brake). Both of these are made by the Jacobs company, so the terms often get crossed up. In which case he is right, there are alot of people using those without thought about what it's doing to the motor.

The system operates the valves in a manner that causes the engine to provide much more braking force then if you just "let off the gas". It is a significant modification to the engine. In the old days it was an option. Now some sort of retarder or engine brake is pretty well standard on just about all trucks.
