When people criticize environmentalists for having a 'hidden agenda', I always wonder: agenda for what? Clean air? Safe water? Fair distribution of precious resources? Geez, how evil of them. Even if you think they just want 'your money', what do you think they'll use it for? To create a cleaner world with safer technologies. Isn't that better than those who take money to make themselves richer and everyone else poorer, destroying nature and human well-being in the process? We can do better.
The agenda is communism and the very same thing that motivates all the worst in mankind. Power. Money. Control. Power is something almost more appealing. Suzuki would love you vote in the Al Gores and radical Left-wing groups who (to save the world) would take power over the wealthiest world-moving industries on the planet. Control big oil and you are so powerful and control so much wealth and lives you become like a Caesar on Earth.
@ElProximo But... environmentalism doesn't equal communism. Does (emphasis) humane distribution of wealth equal socialism? People should take a more balanced view. "Greenies" aren't out to control big oil, they're developing alternatives because fossil fuels are fast running out. If the alternative is cleaner and safer (no harsh toxins; no one dead in a mineshaft), what are we waiting for? What good is all that power if earth is un-livable? We need to pollute less. That is the entire point.
Greenies don't do anything. They do not invent efficient technology nor do they go to work in oil companies nor do anything but use resources and then say how much they oppose using resources and wish someone else would do something.
They don't go to mines and invent safety rules. They don't work as safety managers or invent safety equipment.
Gas and oil companies invent and improve ways to get maximum energy as efficiently as possible.
@ElProximo "Greenies" aren't just activists, but people in all fields--architecture, chemistry, bio-engineering--who are improving technology and inventing new materials. Point is, if industry were powered with safer technology (which now exist) we wouldn't need people to dig underground or to get terminally sick working at a toxic factory. Oil companies can improve, but we need to wean ourselves off fossil fuels. Soon enough, we'll be forced to. Why not choose to do it cooperatively now?
In a sense I agree - the TRUE green protectors are the people who work in big oil, forestry, gas and those people are the ones who find more and more efficient ways to exploit resources into life-giving energy for our world. Some suburban Vancouverite with a ponytail and a hemp t-shirt is a useless resource user who does absolutely nothing but try to hurt oil companies out of some misdirected hatred.
'Fossil fuels' are cheap, efficient and the best we have so far.
@ElProximo Actually, that suburbanite may be helping as best she can by reducing her personal resource use, probably more than you or me. It's impossible to live without using Something - we are not cavemen. It's HOW we use what we need, and to what ends, that is at question. Why settle for 'cheap, dwindling and dirty' when we can have 'clean, safe and lasting'? I don't mindlessly hate oil companies but do see the need to re-shape the status quo. Those in power now should help the rest of us.
You can't have clean safe and lasting at this moment. You can change that by taking engineering courses and inventing safer rig designs. Then you can vote in (or out) politicians and laws that (for example) make them drill far off the coast where leaks are nearly impossible to stop.
Then you can vote with your dollars. Which you do. You buy products which are efficient and last the longest.
You can do that today and big oil doesn't do nothing but encourage it and like it.
@ElProximo Yeah, I think we're starting to cycle here, like on a hamster wheel. Thanks for this exchange. I normally don't bother commenting much less 'dialoguing' anywhere online because those interactions tend to get ugly - and grammatically butchered. But this was nice and civil. However we get there, let's hope we get there. Cheers.
@ElProximo And, please don’t stigmatize caring for the environment with political ideology, slapping all these failed –isms to it. Fact is, ‘big oil’ (i.e. industry) must change, for all our sakes. Individuals can help but unless industry changes, it’s a lost cause - bad news for us all, regardless of personal opinion. Btw, thanks for responding politely, even though you may not agree with me.
Environmental movements are notoriously engaged and part and parcel of left-wing, liberal ideology movements and are made up of them. The environmental concern is often the pretense. Its what they propose to solve the concern is where we see the 'greed, power lust and ideology' because the solution is often that THEY want to be given power over taxes and oil companies and government control.
Realistically this is MOST environmental 'greenie' orgs. left-wing ideologues.
What is wrong with 'Big Oil' making a whole lot of money and why do you suppose they are interested in greed, lust and ideology anyways? Almost everyone I know working in gas and oil are hard working families (or singles) who are often nature lovers (outdoors types, parks, love boating etc) and they like their nice clean house and they would love to save money to insulate their homes or buy new water heaters etc.
Most are not 'leftist liberal' types. Maybe you hate that?
@ElProximo Why should I? I'm no letist. I don't hate money or fault the regular person. The greedy ones are those who keep polluting when they have money to invest in better ways, who insist on sucking every last bit of fuel from the earth, or using even more harmful methods, i.e., in the tar sands of Canada, because another oil well has dried up. Wastefulness on a huge scale. We don't see how rough it is. We just enjoy the perks. Preserving the environment shouldn't be such a controversy.
This is the problem - you think oil is 'evil' and is 'hurting the planet' as opposed to some other option. Wrong. You could not be more wrong. Schlumberger (big gas and oil company) would LOVE to find any more efficient less polluting, safer and more economical product.
They would LOVE IT! They probably fantasize about it and further more will make you rich to find it. But at the moment big oil is easily the safest and most efficient way to keep YOUR life happy and safe.
By "All of our energy, ultimately, is sunlight", he's not saying all energy sources come from the sun. He means "ultimately", without the sun's energy, life on earth wouldn't have developed in the first place - not as it exists now in the form of animals, plants and bickering humans.
A nice little statement i like to use when talking to climate change skeptics, in regards to the scientific consensus is, "if you went to 100 doctors and 99 of them told you that you needed a heart transplant to survive, you'd turn it down huh?"
Because that is the same logic that the deniers are operating on...
He is a wise and Loving man this David Suzuki. He is so right on and with a heart this is awesome! Thumbs up for him and thumbs down for the state of the world today.
Even if global warming isn't related to humans at all, the benefits of lowering our environmental footprint are obvious. Cleaner air, nice rivers, increased health...why is global warming such a dividing point? On the topic of the human population - it's not a personal attack - of course decreasing the population would make it easier to coexist in the world. Even if each couple had two children over time the population would stabilise and decrease, why would that be so bad?

It is sad that despite the fact that both science and common since clearly show us that the environment is an extension of our own bodies people still seem to carry this idea that " well if we can't prove that climate change is 100% due to us we just shouldn’t do anything about it at all..." If you cannot look around you an see that humans have expanded way beyond proportion to other animals clearly you must have some sort of a psychological disease preventing you form seeing the truth.
"All of our energy, ultimately, is sunlight" This statement is not true. Nuclear and geothermal sources of energy do not ultimately come from sunlight. This is not splitting hairs, it is a fundamental aspect of nature that Suzuki either misrepresents for whatever reason or is ignorant about, either of which do not make him a good spokesperson on this topic.

Some humans ARE such idiots! Those who do not believe in Global Warming remind me of those simple minded fools who believed the world was flat. Oh no they cried...don't tell us what we cannot see or chose not to believe. The Explorers broke new ground and proved them wrong.

Global Warming is changing our world NOW. CO2 is 35% above levels for 650,000 years. In just 30 years CO2 will be over 450ppm, enough to acidify oceans to the point of stopping the growth of many planktons and corals. They are at the base of the oceans' food chain.
Why does my blood turn to ice whenever I listen to this psychopath talk?
Why am I left wondering how in the past Suzuki compared humans to 'maggots' and is now putting on the 'P.R. friendly' spin on humans in that we are now 'plants/fish'?

To all those who live in 2100: I would like to let you know that David Suzuki was a liar and a piece of NWO scum. He was one of the corperate shills who was involved in a huge climate change SCAM that said humans were responcible for warming the earth. His theory was completely debunked in 2009 and you, the people of 2100 owe your freedom to his failure.
Buddy 1% of all scientists disagree with climate change, those are the ones paid by the industry not Suzuki you shit tard. So who is the brainwashed tricked one now, listening to whatever the industry got you to believe.
@Coolioitbro -Not too many people are going to argue climate change, the arguement is the cause of climate change. Don't you think it is odd in a 3000 page report on climate change by the ICP they never once mentioned the sun? I think that is strange. Sooo yeh, you could maybe read up a little bit, or call me some more names if that makes you feel better.
We can change! I will carry his name and ideas on when I am older you will k ow the name Taylor Mcisaac! Haha, it will probably be true. And I really Do hope things do change. If not then may the sun explode and cleanse the world of our disease of existence.
um...im shure our species will be dead b4 the sun blows since it will take the sun another 50 million years or something to explode. If our species survive by then, then y should u hope for the sun to explode wen we would've cleansed us by ourselves?
If CO2 is the cause of global warming, why are all the planets in the solar system getting hotter too? The US has prepared for global disaster. You have not herd of this because you were not invited.
I could be wrong but it is worth considering I think the Ozone hole was caused by the atmospheric testing of nuclear weapons, not CFCs as advertised. Dont expect governments to admit they have damaged the planet
Global warming has been caused by the Sun getting hotter. (See solar cycle) We know this because all the planets in the solar system are hotter too. Man made CO2 is < 0.1% of greenhouse gasses. 96% of green house gasses are water vapor (clouds).
All the greenhouse gases has an effect on the climate change; * water vapor * carbon dioxide * methane * nitrous oxide * ozone * CFCs
When a greenhouse gas is overproduced it hurts the stratosphere, and because trees need a lot of co2 it really bad that there is so much deforestation :( But remember that natural produced greengases actually helps the stratosphere. A big part of the stratosphere consists naturally of Co2. To much of anything is never good :(
Listen people theres a huge debate about this, and its bin going on for a long time... the truth is we have bin tricked, just the thing is no one knows who, what, where, or why.
if you were listening to what i was saying, than you would have heard me say, there can be pros and cons, then measure with each other, or we can find out the hard way
If TODAY (November 2008) is to teach us anything, is that we are all intertwinded financially. Each country affects another. Is it so far fetched that the food chain is also intertwinded and each member deserves its respect?
For kjiglet and others that don't "get it", I am sorry you never got your invitation to JOIN Darwin's evoluation scale! Here's hoping you lot go the way of the Dodo (extinct).
I don't think we are quite aware of all the benefits of living in harmony with all around us. It's not just about saving the planet and the immediate threats of flooding, etc, but the cutting of pollution and living healthier has a positive effect on the health and wellbeing of the population, stemming accelerating cancer rates, asthma, chronic fatigue syndrome and other health issues. Understanding interconnectedness is the key. :)
while on the topic the human body, the human body was never ment to be tempered with, I for one do not like stem cell project, its inhumane, we were never meant to mess with life, thanks for your time
right, but it also can be our doom, this topic can go on forever, it just comes down to; limiting our trials, our tests, meaning, test within reason, not with humans, or not even human yet, this will come back on us
What do you mean "was never ment to be tempered with"? Nothing is decided, and nothing is planned. ppl will explore because curiosity is just part of human nature.

We can change! I will carry his name and ideas on when I am older you will k ow the name Taylor Mcisaac! Haha, it will probably be true. And I really Do hope things do change. If not then may the sun explode and cleanse the world of our disease of existence.
piranhakillers 2 years ago
um...im shure our species will be dead b4 the sun blows since it will take the sun another 50 million years or something to explode. If our species survive by then, then y should u hope for the sun to explode wen we would've cleansed us by ourselves?

If CO2 is the cause of global warming, why are all the planets in the solar system getting hotter too? The US has prepared for global disaster. You have not herd of this because you were not invited.
fsoiberg 2 years ago
I'm not shure it's just CO2 I'm pretty shure it's also chlorine wich is causing our Ozone to break down to chlorine oxide and oxygen (i think)
And there r probably at least 50 more problems causing global warming or pollution to the earth. Like cigarettes or hidden nuclear waste, or war lol
boredtodeath55 2 years ago
I could be wrong but it is worth considering I think the Ozone hole was caused by the atmospheric testing of nuclear weapons, not CFCs as advertised. Dont expect governments to admit they have damaged the planet
Global warming has been caused by the Sun getting hotter. (See solar cycle) We know this because all the planets in the solar system are hotter too. Man made CO2 is < 0.1% of greenhouse gasses. 96% of green house gasses are water vapor (clouds).
fsoiberg 2 years ago
o ic wut u mean
boredtodeath55 2 years ago
All the greenhouse gases has an effect on the climate change; * water vapor * carbon dioxide * methane * nitrous oxide * ozone * CFCs
When a greenhouse gas is overproduced it hurts the stratosphere, and because trees need a lot of co2 it really bad that there is so much deforestation :( But remember that natural produced greengases actually helps the stratosphere. A big part of the stratosphere consists naturally of Co2. To much of anything is never good :(

if you were listening to what i was saying, than you would have heard me say, there can be pros and cons, then measure with each other, or we can find out the hard way

well said, I think we all must know this deep inside.
We just can't get caught in all the cycles, remembering and forgetting being one of them, or forgetting, guilt and then remembering again.

while on the topic the human body, the human body was never ment to be tempered with, I for one do not like stem cell project, its inhumane, we were never meant to mess with life, thanks for your time

Us humans just cannot stay away from the forbiden fruit. It may be our doom.
rsuthe00 2 years ago
right, but it also can be our doom, this topic can go on forever, it just comes down to; limiting our trials, our tests, meaning, test within reason, not with humans, or not even human yet, this will come back on us
kensolo79 2 years ago
What do you mean "was never ment to be tempered with"? Nothing is decided, and nothing is planned. ppl will explore because curiosity is just part of human nature.
