Hyundai is doing what Toyota did with the Lexus LS... they're trying to increase their marketshare by appealing to people who wouldn't consider their traditional offerings.
I predict the Genesis and Equus will win over some Mercedes/BMW/Audi buyers. It will definitely win over Lexus buyers since you get everything in a Genesis that you can get in an LS for a significant savings.
It's a S-Class for half the price basically. Let the rich buy a Mercedes/BMW etc and keep their status. Let the smart careless about status and buy luxury/comfort/safety/technology for a lot less.

In Japan there is a minimum wage of 1000 Yen an hour.. Which is about $13 dollars an hour.. for the minimum wage which is even higher then the minimum wage in the United States..

Does anyone else realize how cheap the Equus looks inside and out?? I know all Hyundai's are cheap and crappy, but I thought they would have at least tried to put nicer quality in the Equus. They obviously didn't, so I'm gonna go get a BMW 5 series now.

As a car enthusiast I love a wide range of cars however my beef with the Equus is the cheap clock on the console. It looks like a Lorus Mickey Mouse-theme watch I had in 1987.
What I don't get is this: Hyundai is making quality cars now. But people are saying they suck because A: They are copies of other luxury cars and B: It's a Hyundai? Answer for A: What?! Why does it suck because it copies some good parts and styling? It looks the same as some luxury cars, but that's because luxury cars LOOK ALIKE. Answer for B: Change your mindsets people, Hyundai is going to become respectable, whether you like it or not.

Take a look at Genesis sales. They started off strong and have gradually fallen off since 2009. Hyundai wanted to sell 2000 a year. They sell less than 1500. With all of the discussion about better brand and quality vs pricing, a few things need to be considered. For those of you that say that Toyota/Lexus is not a better brand, you are mistaken. Even amidst all of the recall issues that they are going through right now, they are consistently given highest scores of initial quality and reliability test. Hyundai did win car of the year, but that is in a single category. Toyota wins year over year for overall brand quality.
@fernboy79 With that said, Hyundai has to be the most improved auto manufacturer over the last 15 years. Their models are constantly improving and, yes, they lack in quality on some finishes from higher brands, but that is because they understand that in order to continue to grow their brand and reputation that they need to be lower priced than their competitors. They are essentially buying market share.
@fernboy79 There was a time (not that long ago) where Toyota and Honda vehicles were less expensive than North American brands. Over time they built a loyalty and brand value. This is what has driven their price up...because they can. In fact, it is what has caused the Big Three in NA to drop their prices to a point where they are no longer profitable in this market. (That and the fact that they - GM and Chrysler) have been horrible mismanaged over the years).

the time when korean cars were only affordable and fairly equipped is gone, whether you want it or not. Some people are stupid enough to buy a mercedes instead of a volvo or an infiniti even if it's under equipped (german style with loads of options) and about the same on the road, just to have the star on the hood.

you would be right 5 years ago, but things have changed. I have read lots and lots of reviews worldwide which point out the increased quality and reliability of korean cars. My parents bought a kia (when it was a substandart brand 8 years ago) and never had the slightest prob. with it. Many reliability surveys rank kias among the best ( the cee'd especially) and on par with japanese cars.

About my 106 now, I've had many problems with the alternator; if you were well informed you would know that PSA made some recalls to change it Bcause of unreliability (apparently mine was not changed).

And to end this up, no I have no hyundai and I'm not making any advertisement for it. 2 years ago I thought the same as you. I have a european car (a peugeot 106) which in 6 months made me return it 5 times to the mechanic for various problems. And lately, I have read that Toyota's interior quality was on sharp decline (the auris, avensis models in europe), even though reliability is still good. Just compare the hyundai grandeur with the genesis, the difference in quality is huge.

The car is just mediocre; it's not bad, but please, as I said before, I couldn't buy a car which brand is just trying to "beat" to other with 'false marketing' like, 'we are better and our reliability is better than Toyota's and not innovating anything... Hyundai is doing what Toyota did with the Lexus LS... they're trying to increase their marketshare by appealing to people who wouldn't consider their traditional offerings.
I predict the Genesis and Equus will win over some Mercedes/BMW/Audi buyers. It will definitely win over Lexus buyers since you get everything in a Genesis that you can get in an LS for a significant savings.

To be honest, I used to think the exact same thing but now I wonder what I am purchasing. Is it really smarter to buy a used BMW or a new Hyundai? It will be hard to see my sweet 7-series go but then again, I have no warranty and that is scary. Again, I hear what you are saying. Just consider that not everyone can afford BMW new.

Take a look at Genesis sales. They started off strong and have gradually fallen off since 2009. Hyundai wanted to sell 2000 a year. They sell less than 1500. With all of the discussion about better brand and quality vs pricing, a few things need to be considered. For those of you that say that Toyota/Lexus is not a better brand, you are mistaken. Even amidst all of the recall issues that they are going through right now, they are consistently given highest scores of initial quality and reliability test. Hyundai did win car of the year, but that is in a single category. Toyota wins year over year for overall brand quality.

@fernboy79 With that said, Hyundai has to be the most improved auto manufacturer over the last 15 years. Their models are constantly improving and, yes, they lack in quality on some finishes from higher brands, but that is because they understand that in order to continue to grow their brand and reputation that they need to be lower priced than their competitors. They are essentially buying market share.

@fernboy79 There was a time (not that long ago) where Toyota and Honda vehicles were less expensive than North American brands. Over time they built a loyalty and brand value. This is what has driven their price up...because they can. In fact, it is what has caused the Big Three in NA to drop their prices to a point where they are no longer profitable in this market. (That and the fact that they - GM and Chrysler) have been horrible mismanaged over the years).

And again... the people is not stupid. Hyundai is being replaced by Toyota because of HUGE problems with Hyundai. KIA (Hyundai) gives 7 years of warranty to hide the problems... hahaha...

the time when korean cars were only affordable and fairly equipped is gone, whether you want it or not. Some people are stupid enough to buy a mercedes instead of a volvo or an infiniti even if it's under equipped (german style with loads of options) and about the same on the road, just to have the star on the hood.

@aeroavia89 But that doesn't mean they are better than Japanese brands... and as I said before, especially with that "innovation". On the other hand, I'm really agree with you... sometimes Mercedes has just 'the star' on the hood... And let me say... the korean cars are still sold because of price and no bad quality. Ask to taxi drivers... I don't know just 'one' who changed again to Toyota after buying a non-reliable Hyundai. (They are several people, believe me :) )

@aeroavia89 Anyway, maybe like this you feel better: Nowdays is really difficult to innovate... almost "everything" is invented but at least they could try to use its imagination to create engine variants. Probably you have a Hyundai and I respect that, but really, we should be objective sometimes... and Hyundai is still far from main makes and they survive for people whom is not able to buy a better (and sometimes more expensive) car.

you would be right 5 years ago, but things have changed. I have read lots and lots of reviews worldwide which point out the increased quality and reliability of korean cars. My parents bought a kia (when it was a substandart brand 8 years ago) and never had the slightest prob. with it. Many reliability surveys rank kias among the best ( the cee'd especially) and on par with japanese cars.

I'll end this discussion here since you seem pretty stubborn.I remind you that toyotas are not the best built anymore (except lexus). And as for hyundai, they have been making quality vahicles only since 2 years or so (veracruz, genesis...) Now believe me or not , this is your own problem. About my 106 now, I've had many problems with the alternator; if you were well informed you would know that PSA made some recalls to change it Bcause of unreliability (apparently mine was not changed).

I have REASONS why I know what I say... the 106 as well as Saxo use the SAME engina with 'alternator' included and please, I let you ask to ANY rent-a-car to know the opinion about those cars. Of course Toyota is still like this and you can check any stadistic (included Lexus). End.

And to end this up, no I have no hyundai and I'm not making any advertisement for it. 2 years ago I thought the same as you. I have a european car (a peugeot 106) which in 6 months made me return it 5 times to the mechanic for various problems. And lately, I have read that Toyota's interior quality was on sharp decline (the auris, avensis models in europe), even though reliability is still good. Just compare the hyundai grandeur with the genesis, the difference in quality is huge.

You should try to be informed instead making advertisement like this... Auris, Avensis... but what are you talking about? There was an only one problem with the Avensis and it was on the first model (1998 (electric trouble))... haha... don't say ridiculous things without any sense.

The 106 (gasoline) as well as Citroën Saxo, 1.1 and 1.4 are the most reliable engines from PSA, and they are almost indestructible... the engine comes from the already OLD Citroën AX and really, if you have problems with that car is just because you even don't know when to change the oil... Then, you probably have a Hyundai and as I said, you are not objective. Anyway, have a great day, sorry for disturbing.

I'm from Canary Islands, Spain and around the 50% of Taxis are Toyota... even the Hyundai (maybe 1%) are being replaced by Toyota again because of the reliability of Hyundai (not reliable and high comsuption). They wanted to save money buying Hyundai and what's happening now? Buying again Toyota, Toyota, as everybody knows is reliable. If you don't know what are you talking about, please... leave it.

The car is just mediocre; it's not bad, but please, as I said before, I couldn't buy a car which brand is just trying to "beat" to other with 'false marketing' like, 'we are better and our reliability is better than Toyota's and not innovating anything... (well, yes... a curious name (Hyundai), in English sounds as 'Honda'; this is 'innovation' for Hyundai). I think it sounds like 'some complex of people' (maybe they feel inferior) and that's why they are all the time comparing with Japanese...

hyundai is not trying to sound like honda at all, hyundai is an actual korean word and it just happens to sound similar but the word has been around for a very long time in the korean vocabulary. It has nothing to do with innovation or copying...
