This was one of the hardest final bosses in the game for me..... this and the thing with two heads, ugh, I almost smashed my controller on the ground many times playing this game
The sad part of this boss battle is that the player dies in the ending. Good times, though I played the Japanese version which was easier than the US version.
@sonofboo I agree. Most internet ignoramuses automatically think that their first exposure to something or the one they are most familiar with is the original and everything else a copy.
A brain in a jar can be seen being used as an evil entity all the way back to the 1960s. Its a pretty standard thing usually in control of something robotic and/or computerized.
I can assure that Konami did not get the idea for this from Metroid or Nintendo in anyway. Where else would put a bodyless brain?
THIS LOOKS LIKE METROID WEN SAMUS IS SHOOTING THE GLASS OFF AND MOTHERBRAIN COMES OUT , BUT THIS ONE IS FLIPPED AROUND LOL AND HAS THAT GIANT GUN, WITH ATTACKS THAT RESMEBLE MOTHER BRAIN'S ATTAKCS
you can't say konami didn't get this idea from nintendo,it haves Metroid written all over it this thing is disgusting, butt who knew a Metroid style boss fit so well into a contra game this is the reason why contra is awesome in the first place?
I had never played this version of Contra when it came out (I was a SNES fanboi, so 3TAW was for me). Looking at these fan videos now, this is definitely the title in the series that went off the "serious" track. Not sure if I dig it or not, which probably makes me a grumpy curmudgeon wanting the old Contra days back, but oh well. Shattered Soldier for PS2 was another weird one in the series, and the story for that one didn't make a ton of sense either, so I agree with some recent comments here.
But it just doesn't do the theme of the game any justice, unlike Contra 3 where it sets the atmosphere a lot better. Even the ending of Hardcorps sounds like some crazy dance track unlike Contra 3s ending where it actaually has some sense of emotion of what you've just done.
Thats the point. No emotion here. But if youve played Contra 3 you'd see they actually made an effort to convey that they'd saved earth from clutches of evil. They had a miltary fanfare. This? Crazy guitar solos. So what if its blowing up aliens? Even the Alien franchise and Predator movies have emotion in them and they involve getting rid of alien threats.
By that logic anything with something being destroyed in requires no effort or emotion. This game doesn't NEED to express any emotion, but as a whole game package, the music is very sloppy and is vastly inferior to Contra 3s were it expresses both war, destruction and also emotion all at once. Also, the ending to contra 3 was epic as a result of it. This just cues the same crazy music previously heard throughout.
When you fight a boss - do you expect slow paced love ballad music? No. Music adds feeling and atmosphere to a game. It isnt hard to understand. Also, I am interested in games and game soundtracks and the overall product, how they come together. Not an interest to you? Then leave it be and enjoy the fact youre blasting aliens.
Yes, and even if I didn't I could just google it. So it matters not. As for putting words in your mouth - you said it yourself. "Needs no emotion, its just blasting aliens". Well in that case I hope next time I watch aliens they slap a heavy beat over the top and expect it to be effective. Also, you have an issue if you feel the need to leave an insult in my channel comment.
Oh yes, I have an issue with you. You took my "need no emotion" and completely reinterpreted it to suit your whim.
The whole game is just a boss rush. Do you really need a complete bloody orchestra to get that "feeling" across? What is wrong w/ using this kind of music to tell you you're going to be fighting bosses that basically state "you're going to die"?
I twisted it nowhere at all. You said it needs no emotion - its about blasting aliens. I said fair enough if thats what you enjoy from the game, enjoy it.
Talking of putting words in your mouth, you have mine. I never said use an orchrestra. Contra 3 used military styled drumming and fanfare thru use of midi. I also never said the guitar solo styled music was bad for "your going to die" on boss rushes.
Contra 3 was influenced by movie soundtracks such as Predator, Alien and Terminator. Hardcorps uses generic genesis "solos", it creates good "blood rushing" music for boss rushes. But for the stages themselves, it does nothing like the music used in Contra 3. "No man's land" (stage 6 of Contra 3) has slower paced fanfares, war styled drumming. It has this prepare for war feel.Youre in the heart of the alien hive. Stage 1, youre placed ina warzone and the music reflects it without using "solos".
And as I mentioned, at the end of Contra 3, you get a bittersweet military fanfare that turns back in to a triumphant war styled drumming. It all adds to the game overall.
Going by that, can you really compare the music styles found in the two games? The 3rd game had that war theme to it, while Hardcorps was essentially the aftermath of the war, cleaning up any loose ends.
Others? I doubt we had enough titles in the series to really start drawing comparisons to one another. The first two barely had any story coverage to them until Konami decided to tell the full story of the series way past when Contra 3 came out.
@EVAKirby Well, theres quite a lot of Contra titles now. So theres a lot to compare. As for Contra, I wouldn't really consider story to much in to it. After all Rebirth has cross dressing in it for no real reason, and the story slideshow is totally senseless. I mean it is easy to see, Contra 1,2,3 all had this more serious vibe to them. By hardcorps we had robot wolves with glassess on, Contras gone down a rather OTT cartoony path now. I've come to learn to enjoy it.
Sorry, I meant to say we didn't have much to compare when Contra 3 first came out. All we had then were the games and instruction manuals, and thanks to Konami at the time, we had three different stories going about until Contra 4 set everything back up on the proper path.
Yeah, thats true. It was bascially like the first 3 Contras, but thats why Konami intended, hence why they ignored a lot of elements from Contra games that followed after Alien Wars 3. (Bascially why its called Contra 4, its a follow on using 1,2,3s mechanics and gameplay).
You make a good point about it being about clearing up loose ends, in fact some of the tracks are good from Hardcorps (the one in this video is at the end of Contra Rebirth and fits well). But as a whole the soundtracks pretty lousy for Hardcorps. The genesis had to make due with what it could do, which was "shredding" styled music, the SNES's sound chip was more advanced. Which is why I can forgive this game for musically going down the route it went.
Though if you listen to the final battle at the end of Contra 3 you'll hear the game manages to do that without resorting to wild guitar solos.
Also, when you defeat the bosses it uses the same mindless soloing for the ending. The game just feels very 2D musically and it doesn't creare the movie, or emotion style of the 3rd.
Well, not exactly solos, but yeah the musics heavier, which is what I'd kind of expect on a boss battle. Though the final 4 game bosses actually don't use solos, in fact you have very Predator styled drum beats.
"For winning, you have to lose", this is what a Contra game is all about, you can't master that game in one single time. Only patience, practice (and maybe luck on some levels) are your only friends and "codes".
I love how at the beginning, Ray says "I'LL STOP YOU!"
Actually, it's too late, because during that conversation, Bahamut blows a giant hole in the earth with his laser cannon (it's before what was captured in this video.)
Uranian Devil Gappa at the end of Contra 3 was a lot better than this one I think, and the music was a lot more atmospheric and military like as well.
Lol, I know. Lots of side scrolling shooters had alien/embryo like flesh merged with metal extensions and stuff in the 90s didnt they. As if they were pained biological experiments twinned with machinery, lol.
yea and i still play it. and the same as BJtheBassist, i could never get passed the jungle as a child. now i finally am able to beat every stage with all of the characters.
Masterful use of shot 2. Very well done. On his third attack phase you could slide through his bullets instead of climbing the walls and ceiling to avoid them.
By far my favourite of the Contra series. All the Contra games had some kind of ridiculous re-playability about them. My fave music will always be Stage 3 of the SNES game. Fucking awesome, but this was the more fast paced game with some weird ass bosses!!! The scientist lab with the morphed enemies was crazy shit. If onaly they would update Contra and LEAVE IT SIDE SCROLLING AND TOP DOWN
Yeah man that's awesome, shame I can't run it on that DS emulator though. Would be nice to have a 3d touch, just leaving it side scrolling. Maybe with some playable depth or something. I don't know, but awesome series
I can only assume that your character doesn't survive -- there's no way for him or her to escape, the player is not seen alive again in this ending, a gloomy tune plays, and a "statue" of your player descends upon the earth. So yeah, it's a bad ending.
nice gameplay bro Hard Corps has to be one of the best Sega Genesis games i beat all 5 endings at first it was the hardest contra then with a few practice runs became one of the easiest games.
