you guys act like this is all new "green " technology , people have been using this same technology for ages to produce heat . Has anyone ever heard of a gardening tool called a "cold frame" ?
I see a you tube video that used drain gutters and was producing 220 deg @ 40 deg out side temp. I like the simplicity of yours though. Any thought on how to get the temp higher?
@Tomigun101 DOUBLE PANE GLASS with argon seal fill. Or find a window that is in good condition. Lowes marks them at 70% off because they were custom and the size was wrong. I got 15 for $21 each, regular price $250, I used most of them of windows:-) But I have one left I will be testing. ALSO ADDING THIS:
Can't wait to see this finished and how it will work. As a professional woodworker I had issues with your tablesaw safety. I think 2 x 4s aren't the best choice of wood as they usually come from the lumber yard wet and cupped. A more stable rot resistant wood like fir or cypess that is kiln dried and seal the heck out of it would be a better choice.- but I understand cost is and issue and I do enjoy your vids.
Well, I applaud the application and results... but I feel you spend a huge amount of time showing me how to make what is essentially a big picture frame.
while doing a pichure frame make a 90 degree frame stops and mount to table then use a clamp to provent movement for a tight joint. you can use a T sqare as the jig to set the scrap 90's true.
Looking forward to see how you complete the project. I hope to build a flat plate collector or 2 before next Winter. Here in NW KS the back of the plate should be insulated. In the event free glass isn't found, I'll be using cleat UV protected lexan corrugated panels for the front. Good job, but I don't see the rating option other than thumbs up, what happen to the multiple rating option here at YT?
If you want a strong joint a simple butt joint is better and based on the size of glass you have there should be about 3/16" or more over size on frame to glass to insure when the glass gets hot there is no binding. The best screws to use are deck screws or hot dip galvanize screws avoid using sheet rock screws as they are designed to be used for indoor and will not hold up to exterior elements.
@shartne I bought a glass table at the Goodwill for $25. Just cutting off some of the excess wood of the table and I already had a large piece of glass with built in frame. Find some old windows and you'll have the same thing, although smaller.
Man! I can't wait till I get a house to do all these cool projects on! I'll have this condo paid off by september and then I'll start saving for a down payment. If I can stand waiting another two years after september I might be able to walk into that house with no mortgage. Then I'll have plenty of money for plywood and other project material!
it would be interesting to see how your air heater compares to one made from pop cans, like in the same light for the same size. If yours does out perform the pop can ones, it would be great because it is way easier to build.
Why did you have to Miter the joints ? Wouldn't a butt-joint work as well to make a rectangular frame and much faster ?

Your glass looks tinted wouldn't it be more effective with clear glass??
depravedpuma 11 months ago
what would happen if you used a fresnel lens instead of a pane of glass?
61520a 1 year ago
@united4mi it will crack the glass because wood expands and contracts in the hot and cold.

@Tomigun101 hi one could also put the glass in before screwing in the last piece of wood to ensure a tight grip on the pain!

Looking forward to Part 3...I had my windows upgraded, and saved
most of the old (cheap) 2-pane windows - so I am ready for part 3...
I have wanted to do this for years. Gas Steam Boiler is most inefficient
when outside is 50-60 degrees. Takes 1/2 hour to boil water. Forced
air solar is a great complement for steam boiler.

You should get yourself a brad gun. A couple of quick tacks would make driving the screw a LOT easier.

there is clamps for joining frame corners for the people that are not strong like you Dan.

@sylvanenergy I would be afraid I would screw one of those screws into my fingers so I would use a clamp. :)

@pinkytm1 I was thinking the same thing, but I would use my Brad nailer to tack it all first then screw it together!!
Dan didint exactly show us the safest or easiest method this time, but still a cool project!
