  • Joe Camilleri= The Duke of Melbourne. I was in year 7 at high school..

  • Just heard Elvis Costello's 'Every day' on radio and for first time noticed the striking similarity in sound to Camilleri. I came to youtube to check, and I see that I'm not alone in this. Never been into their music myself.

  • You guys do know, that the band didn't write this song themselves, don't you?

  • Great pop! Didn't EC produce the song when he was out here touring at the time?

  • Oliver's Army is here to stay! I like this better. Jo must've loved the Graham Parker/Costello late 70s UK scene and he was right up there as part of it. Must have been great to see him live in a pub in Melbourne back in the late 70s early 80s.

  • @mistersmith6000 he supported Elvis Costello on his 1979 Aussie tour. EC also did a cover of Jo Jo Zep's 'So Young' (a mere demo). I'm not sure, but I think Graham Parker also did a cover of Jo Jo's 'So Young'.

  • what a lineup Joe Camilleri, Geoff Burstyn, Gary Young, Wilbur Wilde...

  • The bald guy steals the show :-)

  • @peecee1384 why?

  • @Johnnystrychnine He manages to get some great sounds out of that tiny piano, busts a move with an invisible spade, and has a very shiny head...

  • The song is definitely similar to Elvis Costello's - 'Man Called Uncle' from the 'Get Happy' Album, released in Feb 1980. But this is great, I like them both. By the way is anyone going to upload 'Soon You'll Be Gone' by Jo Jo Zep and the Falcons? My particular favourite.

  • A great way to usher in the 1980's.

  • It's the guitar break in the middle 8 and in the playout that sticks with me. Two guitars a 3rd apart in an unusual harmony, really makes the song soar when the key changes, with enough presence to make their point and not dominate. Masterful stuff.

  • Classy song & sound. Joe is right up there in the history of Aussie Rock Music as one of the landmark best Aussie rock-music talents .. both as a composer + performer. I agree with you nzoz1980 .. Joe has popped up here & there in various convulsions over the years .. but much like the legendary Brian Cadd, I feel that Joe has never ever gotten the accolades & proper recognition either from the industry & the public that have been bloody-well due to him. Great posting !!

  • Same old story, really... talent only gets one so far.

  • this is not that bad

  • this song is so joe jackson.gotta love it.

  • @KyleeDick I reckon it's equal parts Joe and Elvis Costello. That aint actually a bad thing.

  • yep thats WILBER.

  • it is!

  • top stuff

  • With so many great tracks its hard to believe Jo Cameliri isn't thought of as one of the all-time Aussie greats.

    Or is he?

  • He seems to only do small venues these days. He must be under rated for somebody who has had a fair share of hits.

  • It almost sounds like he's singing "All I want to do... is fuuck your motha" at 33....lol

  • I bought this - 7" VINYL! when it first came out. Can't explain why it wasn't a big hit.

  • Maybe not a big hit but a nice melody with cheery lyrics.A little like Frente's "kelly Street"What more you want in a song anyways!!

  • This sounds so Elvis Costello - any connection?

  • EC recorded a version of Jo Jo Zep's 'So Young' back in the late 70's. I suppose Jo Jo Zep thanks with flattery.

  • Do you mean mimicry, not flattery?

  • Mimicking can be a form of flattery... and anyway, it really doesn't matter. Whatever.

By this stage of his career, Jo Jo Zep was not in the habit of mimicking nor impersonating others. This single was slightly different to most of his/their previous efforts. They were a great band that nearly made it - they were not a one-off EC impersonators like The Jags.

  • Did 'Elvis Costello' (Declan sound more original) ever sing with a monkey on his head?

  • Jo Jo Zep gave thanx*

  • Yeah, it does sound like Costello. And Costello once said he borrowed the sound off ABBA!

  • Costello did admit to taking the piano part of 'Oliva's Army' from ABBA's 'Dancing Queen'. How interesting! Nothing's original!

  • No it isn't and, the world is a better place for it. All artists have been influenced from the stuff that came before. No matter what the copywrite/I.P. think (and they're deluded and, greedy)

  • i saw joe in noble park pub in melbourne in his early stage now past more de 15 years,im in argentina ,taaanks youtube

  • there was a good Countdown vid of this song.

how good was the late 70s and early 80s for oz music ?

  • The Elvis Costello song is MAN CALLED UNCLE, from Get Happy, check the piano intro and the melody.

  • Ha, ha... no worries. If you're dad has any other Jo Jo Zep videos, let me know... I have been searching for Falcons stuff for years and my NZOZ accounts need more of them.

  • I saw Joe with the sorrows recently at the Melbourne show on the main stage. Only a few interested onlookers who were still there at night saw him, but what a great performance. Did anyone see his rendition of Advance Australia Fair at Moto GP? Very Camilleri.

  • He seems a really nice bloke does Joe. We saw him play the Bakelite thing in Perth a few years back. He signed the CD I'd just purchased at the gig, and we had a bit of a chat, then he was guiding me thru which tracks he just played that night. So long on the scene, but it shows he still loves what he does.

  • It has to be a labour of love. The man was in his early 30's when he actually 'made' it and already had a 15 year history prior to the Falcons.

  • What Elvis Costello sound alike does this song like? It sure sounds like one of Costello's songs from the past, but which one?

  • I don't know which song, it's been many years since I listened to those EC records... Elvis Costello did do a version of Jo Jo Zep's 'So Young' in 1979. Perhaps imitating EC was a sort of thank you...

  • Exactly what he said ^ lmao ..maybe this is where Elaine from Seinfeld got her famous dance style from lol

  • Jo Camilleri, great singer, god awful moves!
