The movie mentioned is "Koyanisqaatsi" (Hopi Indian language loosely meaning"World in turmoil") Godfrey Reggio : Director FUCKING AWESOME!!!! All shot in 70mm Slo mo, Stop animation and time lapse. Made around 1984 from memory. Well worth a look. Also check out the follow up movies "Powaqaatsi" "Baraka" Cheers

Labrie fits DT, just listen to the sprit carries on..imagine some deep guys voice in that song. Labrie has serious range as well, PT is tied with DT for my favrorite band..and circus maximus, symphony x etc..

I have to say that I agree with the DT comment. I don't feel their music to be in the same vein - not only complexity...or difficulty of performance but also it sets a different mood for me - in the sounds and the singing;

Even though DT is my fav band, I must agree that gavun has WAY more groove and touch on his playing, Portnoy is a pretty straight forward drummer where as gavin has alot of jazz influence, So gavin has more all around skill.

I totally disagree with this. To me DT has always been unstructured musically but overproduced in the studio. I feel that PT songs are complete compositions in a much more satisfying way.

I disagree with your views on Dream Theater. And i cant say that Porcupine Tree is turning into Dream Theater, but songs like Anesthetize are hard to ignore.

Where Dream Theater show their influences heavily ...

You can clearly see Porcupine Tree's influences in this song. [Muse, The Mars Volta, Meshuggah, Tool]

Not to mention the song is structured like a Dream Theater epic.

(I think) Dream Theater is completely different than Porcupine Tree. Dream Theater are more classical-metal based. Porcupine Tree reflects hits of : King Crimson (considering Belew + Fripp have played on 2 of their albums), Tool, Pink Floyd, Queensryche, Muse, etc. Just because their songs (Anesthetize) are epic and structured in 'chapters' doesn't make it Dream Theater-esque.

*I think Gavin Harrison deserved the award; he's a way overlooked drummer who is better than alot of them out there.

Oh yeh, no doubt he deserved it well over Portnoy. Maybe 'stole' was the wrong word to use.

But metal is a new influnce on Porcupine Tree, so there is no way a band like them can play prog metal and not sound like Dream Theater at some point.

In my opinion, Gavin Harrison has a much more organic approach to the skins than that of Portnoy's approach. I have always felt that DT's music is more of a physical and mental challenge for themselves more so than a natural artistic process. I seem to feel Harrison's approach as a dynamic accent to the songs as a whole, where as Portnoy just plays as fast and as technical as he can. I always was turned off by DT because of that approach from all of their members.

lol, maybe im being slightly misunderstood. Because there is no doubt that Portnoy is all about timing, mathematics and playing as technical as he can.

But as for Porcupine Tree; metal is a new influnece to them. And i think Dream Theater defined Progressive Metal so well in albums like Scenes From A Memory that is hard for a Prog Rock band like PT to play metal and NOT sound similar to DT on occasions.

I mean, even bands like Opeth and Between the Buried and Me can sound like DT at times.
