Man, Brent sounds really terrible for the first half of this, seems to pick up a bit near the middle of it though, with the 2nd or third time change. I saw them live in November, seems like the vocal lessons they mentioned in an interview are starting to pay off.
@SquidShield9000 I most certainly agree. Only Brent's vocals suck, though. Brann and Troy are on par. But man, they diddly just as good live as on album and Brann is only of the best poly-rythmic style drummer on this planet in my opinion.
@grewell912 I heard them back on the vma's when they performed colony of birchmen with Josh Homme but because of the lack of fucking internet, i didn't hear about them again until late 08....then Crack the skye came out. Huge fan ever since. You check out all of the earlier albums??
This song is literally one of the only songs that has made me listen to it over and over.......and over again, doesn't fail to captivate my eardrums. Holy shitballs what an amazingly well written and performed song!! The Last Baron is in an EPIC!!!
these guys have been really growing on me in the past 3 months starting with Crack the Skye. I am in love with this album. The Hunter and Leviathan are starting to grow on me as well
@RogueRuff How could you even say that? It sounds like a crying baby or as if he were deaf. But either way I'll just not listen to the live, even though i love live guitar.. Pewp
@punkinboy100 I know the words and he's saying them. That's the thing about Mastodon. It's weird how no one can understand what they're saying without previous knowledge of the lyrics. For the most part.
and btw... fuck iTunes... fuck Apple. @K6Mace Many of us don't deal in CDs any longer, so the digital form is how we roll. I understand your sentiment, but when the band themselves advertise purchasing their music via iTunes, I kind of figure they're ok with it. I, too, lament the demise of record stores, yet that's how the world is going these days. If it weren't for the Internet and the current digital age, many artists wouldn't get a chance to record or spread their music because the record companies wouldn't sign them.
@goody0033@K6Mace The thing is that if you buy digital copy, and I mean REALLY buy, the band (the publisher) gets more many than buying physical hard copy. The margins on iTunes are 40%-60%, while the margins with regular distribution are 8%-15% tops.
Printing CDs, printing covers, packing, transporting, paying record store employees, electricity bills, taxes... Everything cost money, while on iTunes, everyting that gets spent is... electricity. Think about that!
@goody0033 Digital form? And what form is a CD exactly? I know what you're saying, but CD's are digital as well, and I do agree fuck Itunes and fuck Apple. They've become another big company trying to monopolize the industry. There are a lot of other websites that sell the same stuff for less, and you don't have to give your money to Apple.
@Sunderlanding Ok, go ahead and split hairs if you want. You admit that you knew what I meant, so what's the point in railing on about my post? Anyway, I stand by my comment that the band pushes iTunes so they must be fine with that company selling their music. If they weren't, they could be like many bands and not allow Apple to sell their shit. The way I see it, an iTunes sale is a hell of a lot better than someone fucking the band with a free torrent download. The end.
@goody0033 Sure, but there are even better ways. I'm just trying to encourage people to look for the other online digital music shops, so they don't blindly give their money to Apple.
@K6Mace i can dig the way you feel but bands don't make money in album sales anymore... they make their money from touring and contracts with guitar companies, string companies... etc. if you wanna help the artists you love so they can keep making the music you love, go see them live.
@K6Mace make sense. do you actually know where the money goes? Try blaming the labels. A $9.99 album on iTunes, $6.27 goes to the label, artist gets $.97. Apple's cut is therefore $2.75 to run the whole store, handle the encoding, make desktop software, the whole experience, and profit. Who's the bigger problem? Compare this to a retail CD where they would make anywhere from $.30 to $1.00 max.
Also enjoy watching this on YouTube for $0. Mastodon's not making any money off your dumb ass.
@damagexyz hah, others replied to my comment before and made perfect sense (saying that bands need electronic advertisement and going to shows is the best way to support them). You, on the other hand, are just being an ass. I own a Mastodon album, buying The Hunter soon, and I've been to one of their shows, and can't wait for the next one. I'd do more if I could, but I'm a broke 18 year old. And I'd rather give money to labels than iTunes. They're the ones who fund metal, not Apple :)
@K6Mace I've given you the facts. Mastodon like most other artists, have made more money from iTunes than anywhere else. Apple was the first company to do digital distribution effectively, when nobody else could get their shit together. You can believe whatever you want, but the numbers are widely known now. It's not a secret.
@damagexyz That's probably true, but it's not all about the numbers man. The experience of a show, Tshirt, CD or DVD is much more grand... It's not all about the band either... I'd just rather support people who live through metal... Apple doesn't really care about us. I guess it's just a personal thing too...
@K6Mace If you were to buy it at any other retail store, they would take a cut of the money just like Apple would. When it comes to local, self-producing bands, Apple and Amazon's online music distribution has allowed so many of them to make a profit without a record label. In fact, it could be argued that record companies fuel the "greed of capitalism." In the end, your post is full of so much ignorance that it makes me sad.
@TheGermishGuy ... Ok you obviously didn't understand what I said. I'm all for bands using whatever means (including iTunes) to spread their music. But if you already know and a love a band, why would you download their music when you can have a more valuable hard copy. I mean Apple doesn't NEED your money, they make most of their fortune from the Hiphop industry anyway. I'd rather support a local record store/metal website/metal record company that loves/supports this music.
@TheGermishGuy Seriously though, going around calling people ignorant doesn't make you right. Yes I don't know much about how the money spreads around, but I still care more about supporting the guy who dedicated his life to music by opening a record store, the people who sell Metal Merch online and deliver it to me from across the world, and the record company who funds the band and helps them find their way. To support bands the most, I see their shows and i buy music and shirts there.
@K6Mace You do realise the bands makes jack-shit money from record sales, right? Doesn't matter if you buy the music off iTunes or pick up a physical copy, 99% of the sales go back to distributers and the record companies.
If you really want to support an artist financially, buy merch or go to their shows. That's how bands make their money.
@Raro404 Yeah I know that now, but I still stand by what I said. I wouldn't want any of my money to go to iTunes who couldn't care less, if I can instead give it to some other people who actually care about the music that I'm buying, and also support it (by people I mean record stores, record companies and distributers)
ESPECIALLY record companies. Without them, the band would die. No support, publicity, fanbase, touring, income...
Not to mention the CD's sentimental value to a fan :)
@K6Mace You're so funny. Do you not realize that buying the album on iTunes also gets money to the band and the record company? "The record store/website" in this case would be iTunes, and how big a cut do you really think Steve Jobs was getting when people bought albums on iTunes? Also LMAO @ "it just fuels the greed of capitalism." Yeah cuz record stores aren't capitalist or anything. They aren't making any profits.
@minusjason Gosh. Copy paste from a week old reply:
I wouldn't want any of my money to go to iTunes who couldn't care less, if I can instead give it to some other people who actually care about the music that I'm buying, and also support it (by people I mean record stores, record companies and distributers)

@K6Mace Sorry to break it to ya, but they get ripped off on that too. Take a look at this and you see where your money for an album really goes. Google "where the money for a record album goes pie chart" with no quotes. Click first link that says "The Music Industry's Funny Money - The Root"
@nread2010 yeah it's not the best system ever, but Mastodon is playing in my city in April, so it must be doing something right :P
Also, I've been buying a lot of used CDs/tapes lately which only gives money to the seller... It doesn't help the band directly, but as I enjoy their CD I grow more attached to them and will probably support them when they go on tour :D
This song is as epic as the rhythm guitarist's mullet and handle bar mustache. There's an insane amount of party in the back of that mullet---shred on!
Mastodon is my absolute favorite band but it almost pains me to hear Brent sing live. I feel awful for saying it but geez he really needs to work on singing >.< please don't shoot me down :P
his voice is a little whinny but it makes the band whole when they all sing together its beautiful and harmonies there just the best band out hands down
I don't want to be the guy that says that "Mastodon is really complex..." and all that shit, but I'm almost sure that I could be friends with anyone who likes their music!!
So, cheers for all of you, the friends I'll never get to meet #
brent hinds, please, please, please stop singing!! i love everything by mastodon except brent's vocals when he does them live (he's ok on the albums but is also very processed)...why don't just troy and brann do vocals? is his ego so fucking big?
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
I guess the reasons why Crack the Skye is my least favorite (still like it though) Mastodon album are 1. I have to get really high to even think about the lyrics and concept 2. Brents one tone vocals start to grate on me... Tell me he doen't sound like a dying cat here. Prepare to thumbs down and call me horrible names... Im sure I deserve it
@billyjoelsux It's no crime to have an opinion, so I definitely won't flame you. You like the album but it's not your favorite. I feel the same way about certain albums by my favorite bands. Glad you stopped by to check this out! :-)
I agree, Although 2009 was probably brents worst year for vocals, I saw them in 2009 and they where the same, but I saw them in 2010 and 2011 and they where perfect, I guess he had a lot of practice or lessons lol, but I don't know why for the love of god they picked this concert to film. At the time watching handycams I could tell this wasn't their best show, I had a similar opinion to billyjoelsux until I saw them in 2010
@Ionwaffle It wasn't that bad. I personally love the dvd and album. I cant wait for the next live album. Idk, bands have to get used to playing the songs like. Listen to metallica doing songs off of master of puppets during the early parts of the tour, then listen to the same songs in like, 88 or something. big improvement.
@goody0033 i dont play favorites, but i listen to blood mountain the most, but if i said that i had a definite favorite, I'd be a liar because i love all of them. I'm just being honest, im not being a fanboy about it lol. Black sabbath is the same way for me. and Alice in chains.
@billyjoelsux In my opinion Crack the Skye is their best album because it's just so much deeper than the rest. It's a conceptual album which are rare to find these days. I agree that Brent's vocals are bad but they're more about music itself than vocals and so am I =)
@Sunchild333 I think Leviathon was a better conceptual album. The concept part succeeded. The music writing and production brought you into scary Melville sea world. And it was maybe the best metal riff fest of the last twenty years. The Crack the Skye story makes no sense. Out of body time travel, Rasputin meets Stephen hawking meets Bran's sister. I couldnt get stoned enough to give a shit
@billyjoelsux Their vocals live are definitely lacking but I really don't blame them because of all the technical guitar shit. I love the album but still not as much as Blood Mountain.
@billyjoelsux Haha I know what ya mean, he's too busy playing hard shit on his guitar to sing well :P I think on the actual album he sounds more like a pirate singing.....but in a really good way :P
Mastodon is amazing. I do, however agree that they need to get a vocalist because their live singing is a little rough. Still my favorite progmetal band tho
Haha the guy at 5:43 totally has a Legend of Zelda jacket, freaking bad ass. And is actually funny almost every MetalHead I know is a nerd in some shape or form including me.
It seem like Mastodon just adds some vocals near the end of jamming the songs and fine tuning them like how you might add some bells and whistles when finishing up writting and recording a song/cd. I used to feel bad for brent cause he is so off key / tunes sometimes .However it also seems like the mix guy is always off too, and he sings with a dry mic! How could anyone play music like this(those solos and shit) and still sing with a dry mic? Would anyone agree?
@johnbagel06 i think with that plus hes singing for 13 fucking minutes straight is more than enough to give him a break. i think his singing here is more epic than the album version at times.
somethin about his voice in this song as played live hit me as kind of weird, then i realized i fucking love it. truly a top 5 mastodon song if not number 1
@TheCorruptionlives in my opinion the money metallica is making now should of been made in the 80's...but they were underground for some reason then...but i blame bob rock...cause there was an interview with lars or james i think that said jason had bass tracks that were just like the jutice album but they said they had already planned to go in the opposite direction...there could of been a jutice 2...but blame bob rock for saying that he can make there music sound like there live concerts
Its already on that album so go listen to it. I hope with Metallicas album they advance their sound and maybe try something different instead of relying on their old style like in DM. St Anger dvd is really fun to listen to. I was impressed when they play that sort of style because it was sort of like blues stuff from the Load cds combined with a bit of their old thrash style.
i had my doubts about buying this album at first. First i picked up blood mountain, leviathon, the call of mastodon. I heard this album wasnt as aggressive and more laid back. Kinda turned me away. Then I worked up the guts to just give it a listen...and i havent stopped listening. and never will.
8:22 Seriously, that riff is unreal. Its like funk metal or something, and its right in the middle of an epic song. These guys know how to write music.
@stratocaster1986able i like to refer to that part and the funky part in the middle of The Czar as "Michael Jackson Metal" it's just so damn funky and catchy i just can't help but do a little MJ dance
Mastodon wouldnt be the same if they got someone else to do the vocals. Even though the songs are truly hard to sing live do to their cleanliness, it just wouldnt be the same if Brent, Troy and now even Brann didnt do the singing, IMO. They arent the best vocalists in the music bus. and thats probably why their earlier work was mostly screaming but I love how Mastodon sounds, all the way from Remission to Crack the Skye and EVERYTHING in between.
Brent is wasted, the intro bit "I guess they could say, we could set this world ablaze" sounds like "Ayyy gyaaas theym sai wee could se this worl ablayyy"
You have to give that guy props for singing while playing guitar. it's gotta be pretty damn difficult to give it your all on both singing the right lyrics and playing the right notes at the same time..
vocal tuning is fine ( i expected that to be the thing people would be bitching about) but it almost sounds like he doesnt really know what the lyrics are... strange, still a good performance for sure
they actually play this novel live? wow idk if i could do a song that long. it is my favorit mastodon song so far though like the rush part in the middle
@zackypooofillinois I saw them twice on their last tour and they were playing the "Crack the Skye" album in its entirety. It's really cool to hear a band do that with an album.
@goody0033 yeah it is! i love the musicianship in this album you can tell they worked hard on it. this is the first song that's this long that i can listen to over and over. i even posted it on facebook. thanks to them i'm ignoring all else on my ipod as well
@goody0033 Was that the one with Dethklok? I was at the show in Austin and I don't think I have witnessed anything as close to perfect as that show. Seeing this album performed live is so beautiful...
@amrocthegreat Yes, that was the tour. I was a little miffed that Mastodon wasn't the headliner, but I hadn't really done the research on the tour. Dethklok was really good, although I wasn't overly familiar with the music at the time. I've since listened to the 2 albums and know the tunes better.
@goody0033 its like opeth, they did their blacwater park album in its entirety, and then other songs showing their musical progression through the decades
Dunno why everybody's on Brent's vocals. This is really one of his better performances, and hell he looks and sings like some sinister troll, and if that's not metal, I dunno what is.
I love Troy Sanders. I honestly Do. I'm Gay for him. He made me pick up the bass. To shake his hand, and tell him how awesome he and his bandmates are, would complete my life. Nothing would make me happier.
Man, Brent sounds really terrible for the first half of this, seems to pick up a bit near the middle of it though, with the 2nd or third time change. I saw them live in November, seems like the vocal lessons they mentioned in an interview are starting to pay off.

ESPECIALLY record companies. Without them, the band would die. No support, publicity, fanbase, touring, income...
Not to mention the CD's sentimental value to a fan :)

@K6Mace Sorry to break it to ya, but they get ripped off on that too. Take a look at this and you see where your money for an album really goes. Google "where the money for a record album goes pie chart" with no quotes. Click first link that says "The Music Industry's Funny Money - The Root"
nread2010 1 week ago
@nread2010 yeah it's not the best system ever, but Mastodon is playing in my city in April, so it must be doing something right :P
Also, I've been buying a lot of used CDs/tapes lately which only gives money to the seller... It doesn't help the band directly, but as I enjoy their CD I grow more attached to them and will probably support them when they go on tour :D

brent hinds, please, please, please stop singing!! i love everything by mastodon except brent's vocals when he does them live (he's ok on the albums but is also very processed)...why don't just troy and brann do vocals? is his ego so fucking big?

I guess the reasons why Crack the Skye is my least favorite (still like it though) Mastodon album are 1. I have to get really high to even think about the lyrics and concept 2. Brents one tone vocals start to grate on me... Tell me he doen't sound like a dying cat here. Prepare to thumbs down and call me horrible names... Im sure I deserve it
billyjoelsux 6 months ago
@billyjoelsux It's no crime to have an opinion, so I definitely won't flame you. You like the album but it's not your favorite. I feel the same way about certain albums by my favorite bands. Glad you stopped by to check this out! :-)
goody0033 6 months ago 13
@goody0033
I agree, Although 2009 was probably brents worst year for vocals, I saw them in 2009 and they where the same, but I saw them in 2010 and 2011 and they where perfect, I guess he had a lot of practice or lessons lol, but I don't know why for the love of god they picked this concert to film. At the time watching handycams I could tell this wasn't their best show, I had a similar opinion to billyjoelsux until I saw them in 2010
Ionwaffle 6 months ago
@Ionwaffle It wasn't that bad. I personally love the dvd and album. I cant wait for the next live album. Idk, bands have to get used to playing the songs like. Listen to metallica doing songs off of master of puppets during the early parts of the tour, then listen to the same songs in like, 88 or something. big improvement.
beserker1912 6 months ago
@goody0033 i dont play favorites, but i listen to blood mountain the most, but if i said that i had a definite favorite, I'd be a liar because i love all of them. I'm just being honest, im not being a fanboy about it lol. Black sabbath is the same way for me. and Alice in chains.
beserker1912 6 months ago
@billyjoelsux yea i agree with you he does sound like a dying cat hahaha but i love this album favorite for me
inathescem 5 months ago
@billyjoelsux In my opinion Crack the Skye is their best album because it's just so much deeper than the rest. It's a conceptual album which are rare to find these days. I agree that Brent's vocals are bad but they're more about music itself than vocals and so am I =)
Sunchild333 5 months ago
@Sunchild333 I think Leviathon was a better conceptual album. The concept part succeeded. The music writing and production brought you into scary Melville sea world. And it was maybe the best metal riff fest of the last twenty years. The Crack the Skye story makes no sense. Out of body time travel, Rasputin meets Stephen hawking meets Bran's sister. I couldnt get stoned enough to give a shit

@billyjoelsux Try Acid then you'll understand!

@billyjoelsux Their vocals live are definitely lacking but I really don't blame them because of all the technical guitar shit. I love the album but still not as much as Blood Mountain.

People have been bitching about the vocals since Leviathan. Fuck those people.
If a band can give me flawless studio albums and then do a live show with everything but a few of the vocals perfectly, then it shouldn't matter.
And to anyone that thinks the vocals are that big a deal, I have only one thing to say to you: Live Metallica.
Whoever really knows metal knows what I'm talking about.

fmahave87 7 months ago
Brent's vocals sound like someone is masturbating a cat with a razor blade!
gookliotta 7 months ago 2
It seem like Mastodon just adds some vocals near the end of jamming the songs and fine tuning them like how you might add some bells and whistles when finishing up writting and recording a song/cd. I used to feel bad for brent cause he is so off key / tunes sometimes .However it also seems like the mix guy is always off too, and he sings with a dry mic! How could anyone play music like this(those solos and shit) and still sing with a dry mic? Would anyone agree?
johnbagel06 7 months ago
@johnbagel06 i think with that plus hes singing for 13 fucking minutes straight is more than enough to give him a break. i think his singing here is more epic than the album version at times.

somethin about his voice in this song as played live hit me as kind of weird, then i realized i fucking love it. truly a top 5 mastodon song if not number 1
Krazash 7 months ago
@TheCorruptionlives in my opinion the money metallica is making now should of been made in the 80's...but they were underground for some reason then...but i blame bob rock...cause there was an interview with lars or james i think that said jason had bass tracks that were just like the jutice album but they said they had already planned to go in the opposite direction...there could of been a jutice 2...but blame bob rock for saying that he can make there music sound like there live concerts

Both show i saw from them didn't have that song... But wow, this is one of the best songs of all time.
MetAMetAMetAC 7 months ago
Its already on that album so go listen to it. I hope with Metallicas album they advance their sound and maybe try something different instead of relying on their old style like in DM. St Anger dvd is really fun to listen to. I was impressed when they play that sort of style because it was sort of like blues stuff from the Load cds combined with a bit of their old thrash style.
mrghostnzl 7 months ago
i had my doubts about buying this album at first. First i picked up blood mountain, leviathon, the call of mastodon. I heard this album wasnt as aggressive and more laid back. Kinda turned me away. Then I worked up the guts to just give it a listen...and i havent stopped listening. and never will.
