I remember seeing this when it came out. Great to see it again. To bad the video isn't better because I recall the chick walking along the car was hot.
This is my FAV ad for the late 60's GTOs. The drive ins were what young kids who loved (and still do even to this very day) fast powerful cars. The GTO was the car that carried the flag for muscle cars from the 60's to 1970.
@adape0884frank Yeah, if he did step it hard, he would end up in the USSR due to all that POWER and start a nuclear war because the soviets will think he is an invader!!!!!!!!!!! LMAO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
That '70 is nicely equipped. It has the optional hood tach, Rally IIs, it's Palladium Silver with a black interior and has the optional steering wheel- same one that came in the new Trans Am. PLUS THE VOE!!!! What's not to like? LOL
I had a Palladium Silver '70 also, but it had a black vinyl top and blue interior. It had a 4 speed though. But the one in the commercial is better looking, IMO.
Found some new information on VOE option production. Approximately 233 1970 GTOs were factory built with this rare option including 212 hardtop coupes and 21 convertbiles, all were "YS" 400ci 350 hp with either four-speed manual or Turbo Hydra-matic transmissions.
back when people drove cars that were made of metal and sounded sweet from the factory, now you need to spend 40+ thousand dollars to get a car from factory that sounds nice. and its not a pussy pruis lmao!
I love how the exhaust note completely changes when he opens the hood scoops; I had a 69 w/ ram air and opening the scoops never changed the sound of the engine; I guess mine was broke ;(
Yeah..... Keep Buick...and get rid of Pontiac... another reason GM is bankrupt!!! Stupid asses!!! Just like getting rid fo the Caprice..Can we say dumb ass???
@Shield1751 The reason GM got rid of Pontiac was because Buick made them alot of money especially in China wich kept GM afloat for the last 6months before chapter 11
GM made so many screwups over the years..they discontinued this option....and the RA V...the SD-455..Pontiac had So many innovations over the years they the head offices pulled...probably why they are almost bankrupt now....
GM excuses in each decision included mandates from Uncle Sam to meet federal emission-control requirements and use unleaded gas. Other excuses included the "insurance wrath" of 1970 that made musclecars prohibitively expensive to own through punitive surcharges. Same thing with Ford and Chrysler, at least Pontiac kept big engines (400 and 455) as long as possible while everyone else dropped to 350 cid or less.
The V.O.E. is quite rare-only 50 or so cars got it. The commercial was trying to depict Ted's- on Woodward Ave...but it may have been filmed at a "Big Boy"...
There is a rumor about this commercial was only shown once on nationwide TV before it got banned. This happed at the 1970 Super Bowl IV commercial break. When GM executives saw this, they pull the Humbler option called "The Tiger Button" off the market. Only 69 car got this rare option and only 5 of them still exist today.
The commercial was only aired once on the Super Bowl IV break on January 11, 1970.
When GM exclusives saw it, they didn't like when there wher promoting street racing that had a high accident and death rate back then. So they pulled the V.O.E. option of the market and got the commercial banned from TV.
CBS liked the ad, at least for the money that Pontiac paid them. Chevrolet also ran ads during that Super Bowl, one to promote their new-for-70 Monte Carlo and another for the Nova which featured then-Buffalo Bills running back O.J. Simpson.
You are correct. The day after the ad ran, Pontiac execs were called to GM's 14th Floor and ordered to pull further airplay of the ad and discontinue the VOE option immediately.
hahaha.. thought it was some kind of hypnotic suggestion. Still, it must be intended for similar reasons. To imply that driving a GTO lets chicks know you're endowed. That's why I'd drive one, myself. In fact, I'd have "BIG COCK EXPRESS" airbrushed in block letters on the quarterpanels.. just like I do on my Kia.
Did you also notice at the 41 second mark and 44 second mark, the reflection in the windshield, "Big Boy". Now tell me that wasn't on purpose...They must have filmed this at a Big Boy Drive somewhere out west.
@potter660 Sorry potter but your incorrect..I actually own a 70 VOE GTO and mine came from the factory with a 4 spd...PHS documented...Unless mine is just even rarer than the approximately 230 or so they say were made...
I just listened again closely... that song is entirely sexual innuendo. The words are meant to be somewhat abiguous. So, is he cruising for a race or a piece of ass?
Hahaha. LSD date rape. people like that didn't take LSD, and if they did, they probably hated the experience and said it was "Wow, too heavy maaaan". I think Budweiser was the drug of choice here.
Ahh, the glory days of Pontiac. Now it is nothing but a "damaged brand" being left to die by Bob Putz and Red Ink Rick of GM. John Delorean and Bunkie Knudesen must be spinning in their graves if they knew how bad Pontiac is doing today.
My old ass has had a few gto's and I love them, but this is the worst commercial I have ever seen. The goat sounds like shit. It looks like someone could have made sure the damn hood was shut good to! If this was only on that one time it makes me feel a little better
I understand that this commercial ran only once-and that was during Super Bowl IV in January of '70. Heard that top GM management went "postal" over seeing this ad on Super Bowl Sunday and the very next day, ordered Pontiac to pull this ad from further use as well as to discontinue the "VOE" option which as seen in that ad was activated by pulling out the lever marked "EXHAUST." Also notice with the exception of a Plymouth, all the other cars seen in the ad were Chevys.
It's a RARE '70 GTO w/VOE (Vacuum-Operated-Exhaust), only 134 made out of the 40,000+ '70 GTOs made, all "YS'/Autos, No Ram Airs, No Judges. I owned one & have seen only (2) others. VOE switch had the same p/n as the Ram Air switch. Note the RARE '69 Judge stripes - available on very Early '70 GTOs only...
so this car had a factory vacuum exhaust cut out? dayumm..never seen that before..i dont even think they make that repop, do they? boy i wish i woulda beeen around to buy one new.....
Yeah, like people weren't putting aftermarket exhausts on their muscle cars back then. I would immagine drag racing happened with or without this option. Hell, if I owned a GTO in those days I wouldn't be able to stop myself from street racing.
@Sonor05 Totally agreed, but then again, I won't be a jackass and race while i am in the downtown area, i would go to the country and let all my horses loose!!!!
Filmed at the Bob's Big Boy on Woodward I'm told.

The humbler was a VOE system (vacuum operated exhaust). You're thinking of the ram air hood scoops.

He ain't opening the scoops man. He's activating the baffles inside of the mufflers.
