@MrFIJIBULA how are atheists ignorant? How do you know god exists besides personal feelings? The same feelings that tell people vishnu and thor and zeus all exist as well.
@MrFIJIBULA God exists is a contradiction. To exist is to be part of reality. To be part of reality, you must abide by the laws of reality. Two of the laws. A is A (trying to refute this axioms validates it) and reality is independent from conciousness (if not, then reality would be what people think it is, and there would be no reality.) @nathanlovespie It's now called the "Hawking's bounce", but to be honest, the big bounce states the Big Bang starting energy came from two or more multidimensional universes, or "branes", smacked into each other and causing a bit from each to snap off and mix to create our universe and its dimensions.
How do you guys have this extensive knowledge of physics at your fingertips! If I was presenting this show, I would have heard his list and gone "duh... I dunno!"
First thing the caller needs to get over is the "singularity." That is a a buzz word that Stephen Hawking and the rest of the scientific community rejected 20 years ago.
I thought the hosts were being pretty rude, not even letting the guy get his argument out; but evidently this was a continuation of something that started earlier.
-
Anyway, once again we see what seems to be a fundamental fallacy. Even IF it could be demonstrated, beyond a reasonable doubt, that a "god" created the universe: what justifies the conclusion that that "deity" still operates, ~14 billion years later, and occasionally suspends the physical laws of that universe to grant wishes?
really simple to input logic into this guy : Imagine there's a coin in a box. You don't know what the coin is. What he's saying is "You can't disprove it's not a 50 cent coin so therefore it must be a 50 cent coin". That's all they needed to say to let him see where his plan fails.
@Hamporkcheese He is not a scientist. He is just some religious nut spewing terms. I've watched 15 minutes and it was an utter waste of my time. There is no work to research if he didn't create peer reviewed credible scientific papers it's all religious flimflam. His methodology isn't scientific his claims aren't scientific his epistemologic views aren't scientific.
Perpetuum mobile infinite energy what does he think in no-gods name? And he only asks 10 dollars a month? its a scam
@Hamporkcheese Oh but I do have an argument. Anywhere I look on the internet THERE'S RELIGION. I can't find any of his work on Arxiv or any other database. Most of his claims are religious or religious based. There is no perpetuum mobile there isn't infinite energy. How could he base his theories on the bible and ancient civilizations?
@Hamporkcheese I've seen his work; his 'scientific' papers (not the layman papers). How could he ever be a scientist? When I check his references, ... He mostly references to either himself or Elizabeth Rauscher who is also a parapsychologist and who shows interest in 'faith healing'. How has this nothing to do with religion? He is an atheist? Don't even try to make me laugh at that ridiculous idea.
@Hamporkcheese I’ve read all his papers(the ‘scientific’ ones) and watched the video about the proton and some other videos of him. I've made a list of things that I find suspicious/not credible for a scientist.
1)uses both SI/CGS units
2)no uncertainty bars in graphs or any uncertainty in any paper of him where he should
3)uses wikipedia as source not even physics students are allowed to do this
15)speaks in platitudes in his video, it actually didn’t explain anything he just raises the same questions over and over again but doesn’t give the answer, not even in his papers
16)”earth not orbiting sun”vid is rediculous that the sun is moving is known, ‘spirals to your mothers womb and connecting spirals’ is spiritual nonsense
17) Irrelevant and nonsensical animations (it’s probably only used to impress the ‘layman’)
@GLANL if the universe is expanding... something must be contracting... for every action there is an equal and opposite reaction...(im sure you think that the big bang is a guy blowing into a ballon "the lungs must contract" ) you really think there is such thing as an isolated system?? or that the re-normalization of numbers is a good thing?
@Hamporkcheese With all due respect but your analogy fails. Action - reaction would be in the case of the balloon: action=the force exerting on the balloon reaction=balloon resisting expansion. And I wouldn't think of it as a guy blowing into a balloon, it's an anthropomorphization. When I light an explosive mixture in a balloon it doesn't require an implosion. What do you mean with renormalization of numbers?
@Hamporkcheese When it comes down to 'good things' in physics, well there are a lot of possibilities that could kill everything (eventually), is it a good thing? Well I appreciate it in a way but why would I give a label 'good' or 'bad' to something? Is a proton 'good'? But ofcourse I do not know what you mean by 'renormalization of numbers'.
@GLANL look up the the vacuum catastrophe... the vacuum density would formally be infinite if not re normalized... ( but your analogy fails as well... YOU need to light the "explosive mixture" implying that there needs to be something acting on it "a mini explosion to start the "big one"" ) "if i could be bound in a nutshell i could count myself a king of infinite space" Shakespeare were dealing with infinities... but "real scientists" are scared of infinities,so they re-normalize.
@Hamporkcheese What is so wrong about renormalization? Scientists also renormalize in quantum mechanics I rather count up to a 100%. Where does my analogy to your analogy fail? You said an explosion needs an implosion because of action/reaction I showed that it doesn't I didn't say "this is the universe". Furthermore I don't need a "mini explosion" to start the big explosion merely enough energy to start it.
@Hamporkcheese I would also like to quote: "We are to admit no more causes of natural things than such as are both true and sufficient to explain their appearances" Isaac Newton; Rules of reasoning in philosophy; Principia
@Hamporkcheese I guess we're not going to convince one person or another in this discussion. So I rather end this discussion in a friendly manner, that might be more beneficial to both of us (sorry that I intend to end this after spoken last [you may still react ofcourse] but I can't see the point in continuing). Plus, I've spend way too much time in Haramein. When I find out he's a brilliant scientist I will applaud, hitherto I'll be sceptical of him being a scientist.
@GLANL plus quantum theory does not explain the origin of spin... spin is what makes an atom an atom its what makes a galaxy a galaxy... so the physics must match!!! but at the end of the day quantum theory and Einstein field equation dont match up... (space time IS warped but has a twist in it which is embedded in the space time manifold )
I don't know how the universe was created, and I don't know what theory is correct. At least I admit that, when others seem to need to think they know the answer.
@Pravtsios I also don't know how it was created...or what the Universal theory is...
But I don't stop in my search for these answers...And I try at all times to take a humble approach when speculating about these things...based on sound knowledge
I can seem arrogant at times...because I take it quite seriously.
But at all times we should keep accurateness at the forefront of our arguments..
Not logic or reason or rationality...but Accurateness.
I believe, technically speaking, that everybody is an Agnostic. I consider myself to be an Agnostic, because Agnosticism is basically the not knowing of the existence of God. Nobody knows for sure that God exists. It is all faith based, meaning that some people choose to believe that God exists, but in reality nobody knows for sure.
@omgitsbrutalbri I don't. You're not agnostic about a magic teapot that grants wishes floating around Saturn. You aren't agnostic about unicorns. Technically speaking in philosophic terms, we can't "know" much of anything. We can be justified in a belief, and there is nothing to indicate the existence of a god or gods. There is no reason to remain undecided on something when there's nothing supporting it. Burden of proof and all that.
@PlaguedByEarth True, but I believe in ghosts-although there isn't hard proof that they exist. I have just had personal experiences and caught evps (I actually have one I caught on my channel). So I don't want to call myself an atheist, because I'm just not sure. Idk. Just my way of trying to explain my beliefs, or lack there of.
@bevi4 yeah because they know what he's going to say before he says it. i know how they feel, as an atheist who is an activist it's inevitable that after only a year or two you'll already have heard every argument for god that there is.
You know, I've been watching these videos for a few days now... and it seems that the religious people who call to argue their point arew just insecure with their own belief in their god.
It's funny how most atheist don't realize how closed minded their "open minded" head are. The science you speak of is also based on faith. We have faith that our universe was created by a big explosion that came from nothing. Theist, understandably, have a difficult time understanding that. And most atheist fail to think about what existed before that. Theories are not facts, they are assumptions based on facts. An atheist who claims to have more proof than a theist, needs to sit back and
@greaseizdaword I think you need to read up on what The Big Bang really is, because the universe did not come from nothing. But of course you have a difficult time understanding science.
@ayoriceball That's not fair. Help someone rather than harm. This person is in need of a bit of education as you began in your first sentence. Not the harsh treatment of the second.
how not to argue for the existence of god? relise that wether your a atheist or a theist that you can't prove wether there is a god or not and if you do believe or don't believe respect your own belief or disbelief and don't argue.Because you can't change other people
@guitaristman23 Precisely. Debating ideas, religious or otherwise can only be a good thing. That's how society evolves. Put forward your thoughts on a subject and allow them to be criticised or accepted by others. If you're open minded enough you will see the truth or the better idea and go with it whilst rejecting the old, less-good ideas.
@guitaristman23 Not to mention that most religions preach the exact opposite of what you have just said for atheists to do. In several of those you are considered a bad person unworthy of salvation if you do not.
Besides the vast majority of the atheist community is not trying to prove or disprove the existence of if a god is possible. What we do here is disprove the existence of specific claims of divinity. You can disprove the god(s) put forward by religions.
LOL Evey one named "Matt" Just Kicks Ass, Same as you guy from OperationReapo! lol Great Work! Wish you guys were on Australian TV like on SBS or ABC or something Something :D
The almighty God turned my Radio on right in front of me, playing Only God know why, by Kid Rock. the power button wasent even pushed in. Godwink, you gotta read it bud.
Many of the great scientist have stated that there must be a God, so what leg do these AtheistExperience morons have to stand on when the cream of the scientific crop says THERE IS A GOD.
*shoves head inside dryer vent pipe and sniffs* Bounce was my first brand, eh person. Now that we're a little broke, I have to settle for HEBrew grocery brand.
@AthenaSchroedinger The 'big bounce' is a hypothesis for a cyclical universe in which the 'big bang' was the result of the collapse of a previous universe. He was correct in saying the big bounce is a possible natural source for this universe.
No,,,its called street smart! years of experience in real time, bottom line,is the fact i believe in practical things that make sense, based on facts. Rational way of thinking! Exp. What makes the world spin? I don't buy into delusional thinking.Life is governed by levels of authority and laws which come from the 10 commandments.Do your homework and give me a valid answer where the laws came into play,or don't waste my time. The bible if you ever read it.you might understand.Canteluna-confusion..
so using Kens logic,, the big bang has been disproved, and string theory is nonsense, so this proves the universe was created by the Flying Spagetti Monster
look at it this way: if a sect of people said that hamlet was a real character & everything in the story was literally true & to be considered the sacred as the word of god, i might spend some time arguing that they have no proof for their assertions. but my time would be better spent telling them they've missed the point of the play. its relevance is in the beauty of its language & its realistic depiction of human condition as well as the joy of experiencing the performance of the play.
Atheism is a Religion. No one is more Religious than an Atheist. The Atheist Religious Wars which would be Communists trying to force their Atheist religion on you have killed more people in peace time than all the other wars combined. If you will not accept the Religion of Communism which is forced Atheism they will torture and kill you. Everyone in the world has a religion. Romans 5:8 - But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.
@flatop59 Theists believe in all sorts of unbelievable stuff. Like gods and devils. LOL. I am atheist. I know your god don't exist for the same reason I know Sponge Bob don't exist. They are both cartoons.
@flatop59 Probably another anti-critical thought-er who thinks atheists all believe in the non-existence of a god(s). Though the infinite regress argument seems persuasive to me at times; it at least certainly shows that the idea of a creator intelligence has no explanatory power. Theism, pantheism, deism, belief in the non-existence of godism are all on flimsy ground, though not equally flimsy ground by any stretch. Reserving judgement until there is data is truly open minded.
Educate your- self before you argue with me pal...Your answer is not good enough. Atheists are the most hard core deniers of God,,like im a hard core christian with facts...Give Steve Quayle a listen too on Utube...He brilliant! with facts that validate Gods exsitance...As for Matt,,he bores me sick,,,With his rubbish and twisting up biblical text,,,hes no threat to me!!! He deceives people with his lies, remember,he was a Christ follower once. What does that tell ya?
@flatop59 "Atheists are the most hard core deniers of God". Again you seem to not understand what atheism is. The word atheism would not even exist if it were not for the unfounded claims of theists. Atheism is a mere by-product of a worldview that regards evidence and logic as the best tools for discerning truth from myth. If it's logic and evidence that threaten you, then maybe you should refer to yourself as an arationalist. I submit that it is rediculous to choose arationalism over rationali
@EatCarlSagan that atheism is a by-product of theism is true, that it's ridiculous to choose the irrational over the rational is naieve, humans--including you--do it all the time. we have needs that our rationality doesn't satisfy. & your distinction between truth & myth is a false one & the reason for these absurd arguments about metaphysical issues being subject to physical proofs. a myth is a cultural truth not a literal one. i don't argue that god doesn't exist, just not literally.
@canteluna It may not be rediculous from a self-centered point of view. If someone needs to believe in God in order to not be depressed, then i guess it would be rational to believe, no matter how little evidence they have to justify such a belief. "metaphysical issues being subject to physical proofs", we can't even be sure that there are metaphysical issues, if there are then there's apparently no way to resolve them (at least not ambiguously), and if there aren't (no god?) we cant know it.
@EatCarlSagan i don't see metaphysics as something to resolve. love, good, bad, justice are all in the metaphysical realm. we don't have to show physical evidence for their existence nor do we have to define them exactly the same to believe in them or to have a conversation about them.
my point is that atheists make the same mistake as theists, they both argue about god in literal terms. religion is mythology & god is either a fictitious character or a metaphor.
@canteluna I have to take issue with you saying that atheists and theists make a mistake in arguing about god in literal terms when most theists believe in a literal god. The world would be a very, very different place if believers believed in metaphoric gods that simply represented ideals. Some do, most don't. Most believers believe that their god is very real and a literal entity, not a storybook character. Religion is mythology, but when the stories about gods were written,
@Ceenymeeny The question of god as metaphor is a difficult can of worms to open at this date because ancient people had a different mindset than we do today. You can read Karen Armstrong's The History of God and any number of Jospeh Cambell's books (these are among the most popular), that consider this question. Nevertheless, it's my assertion that, given our scientific progress, religion must be relegated to the realm of myth. Doing so does not diminish it except for fools & the rigid minded.
@Ceenymeeny Your claim that gods were created as literal entities: some were, some were not, depends on the culture & the time. I don't see that as relevant. The issue for me is not how to prove or deny the existence of god--that's a fool's game (god in the literal sense does not exist any more than Hamlet existed). The question is how to steer the conversation toward a deeper appreciation of our own myths. Like it or not, the Bible & Jesus are part of our heritage & some of it's worthwhile.
@Ceenymeeny Yes, something like 83% of Americans believe the Bible is either the literal word of god or the inspired word of god. You & I are in the 17% that believe the Bible is a collection of stories written by men. It seems crazy to us that anyone could take it literally who no longer believes in Santa Claus but that shows you not only the capacity we have for delusion but also the need we all have for mythology.
We are not simply rational; we need mythology, but which ones?
@canteluna they were written by people who believed they really existed. The notion that god is either a fictional character or a metaphor and that anyone who says otherwise is wrong is ridiculous.
look at it this way: if a sect of people said that hamlet was a real character & everything in the story was literally true & to be considered the sacred as the word of god, i might spend some time arguing that they have no proof for their assertions. but my time would be better spent telling them they've missed the point of the play. its relevance is in the beauty of its language & its realistic depiction of human condition as well as the joy of experiencing the performance of the play.
Complex machines need to have a creator,,,Duuuu!!! A child has more common sense then that answer. Better yet,,,prove to me you were conceived by your mother??? Give it up!!!!
@flatop59 hey flathead, you are hilarious! ever considered standup comedy? obviously you have, it's what you're doing here. but why not milk that big flat noggin of yours for all it's worth. i think you and michelle bachmann are a match made in heaven. she needs a new campaign strategist. stop wasting your time on us inferior thinkers and go where your talents would be best appreciated: to the land of the deaf & dumb where the blind man is king!
How not to argue??? The fact recent sciencetists have discovered humans cells are identical that of complex machines like the ones we create . Means, their has to be a creator!!!. Just more proof theirs a God!!! And just another ( foolish) lie that you choose to believe... Its would be called logical thinking,,,not logically flawed. Matt baffles me,,,with his so called biblical knowledge and yet his presentation is so diluted!!! Matts brain has turned to mush,,,too many lies he believes!
@flatop59 - "recent sciencetists have discovered humans cells are identical that of complex machines like the ones we create" Citation or you're making it up out of nothing.
@flatop59 'Their' has to be a god? His presentation is 'diluted'? LOOOOOOOOOOOL! You are the kind of moron who couldn't pass third grade. Please spare us your moronic comments.
by religious logic i can say that i have friend called bob who is a magical talking dragon and since you have no way to disprove that statement then you have to assume that bob is real, oh and the evidence that he's real is because i say so and i also say that i'm always right so there bob the talking dragon is by religious standards real

NASSIM HARAMEIN !!!! RESEARCH HIS WORK!!!! ALL THEISTS AND ATHEISTS!!!!!
Hamporkcheese 2 months ago
@Hamporkcheese He is not a scientist. He is just some religious nut spewing terms. I've watched 15 minutes and it was an utter waste of my time. There is no work to research if he didn't create peer reviewed credible scientific papers it's all religious flimflam. His methodology isn't scientific his claims aren't scientific his epistemologic views aren't scientific.
Perpetuum mobile infinite energy what does he think in no-gods name? And he only asks 10 dollars a month? its a scam
GLANL 2 months ago
@GLANL clearly you have looked at none of his research... it has nothing to do with religion... look up the ... The Schwarzschild Proton
Hamporkcheese 2 months ago
@Hamporkcheese Oh but I do have an argument. Anywhere I look on the internet THERE'S RELIGION. I can't find any of his work on Arxiv or any other database. Most of his claims are religious or religious based. There is no perpetuum mobile there isn't infinite energy. How could he base his theories on the bible and ancient civilizations?
GLANL 2 months ago
@Hamporkcheese I've seen his work; his 'scientific' papers (not the layman papers). How could he ever be a scientist? When I check his references, ... He mostly references to either himself or Elizabeth Rauscher who is also a parapsychologist and who shows interest in 'faith healing'. How has this nothing to do with religion? He is an atheist? Don't even try to make me laugh at that ridiculous idea.
GLANL 2 months ago
@GLANL then tell me which "religion" he belongs too...? atheists and theists are one in the same... both extremists...

@GLANL just watch the... The Schwarzschild Proton
Hamporkcheese 2 months ago
@Hamporkcheese I’ve read all his papers(the ‘scientific’ ones) and watched the video about the proton and some other videos of him. I've made a list of things that I find suspicious/not credible for a scientist.
1)uses both SI/CGS units
2)no uncertainty bars in graphs or any uncertainty in any paper of him where he should
3)uses wikipedia as source not even physics students are allowed to do this
4)as source: mainly himself and Rauscher
5)using incredibly basic formulae like F=ma
GLANL 2 months ago
@Hamporkcheese
6)v=2,99*10^10cm/s does not equal C He has to deduce it is the same not say this is almost the same or looks the same.
7)layout of his papers (anyone could use LaTeX but his use of it doesn’t look professional)
8)citations of his work are mainly made by him (I do not know who the other person is)
9)Gives too many constants &c which are ‘self-evident’ and in this context irrelevent where the end result should matter.
GLANL 2 months ago
@Hamporkcheese
10)his calculation doesn’t match the magnetic moment (since he doesn’t even uses uncertainty)
11)not peer reviewed (a biologist helped him write his papers?) the other one is Rauscher (not independent).
12)claims of perpetuum mobile / infinite energy: physical impossible.
13)claims for the divine (epistemologic nonsense)
14)If protons are made of black holes how can they emit light (except for hawking radiation)
GLANL 2 months ago
@Hamporkcheese
18) Newton’s 3rd law isn’t physics 1st law.
GLANL 2 months ago
@GLANL oneness...

19)claims of real super luminal speeds
20) wrong explanation why “the night sky is dark”
21)he asks for 10 dollars a month instead of grants from government/institutes &c.
But i've spend way too much time in this Nassim Haramein. there is no sign for me he is even remotely credible
GLANL 2 months ago
@GLANL if the universe is expanding... something must be contracting... for every action there is an equal and opposite reaction...(im sure you think that the big bang is a guy blowing into a ballon "the lungs must contract" ) you really think there is such thing as an isolated system?? or that the re-normalization of numbers is a good thing?
Hamporkcheese 2 months ago
@Hamporkcheese With all due respect but your analogy fails. Action - reaction would be in the case of the balloon: action=the force exerting on the balloon reaction=balloon resisting expansion. And I wouldn't think of it as a guy blowing into a balloon, it's an anthropomorphization. When I light an explosive mixture in a balloon it doesn't require an implosion. What do you mean with renormalization of numbers?
GLANL 2 months ago
@Hamporkcheese When it comes down to 'good things' in physics, well there are a lot of possibilities that could kill everything (eventually), is it a good thing? Well I appreciate it in a way but why would I give a label 'good' or 'bad' to something? Is a proton 'good'? But ofcourse I do not know what you mean by 'renormalization of numbers'.
GLANL 2 months ago
@GLANL look up the the vacuum catastrophe... the vacuum density would formally be infinite if not re normalized... ( but your analogy fails as well... YOU need to light the "explosive mixture" implying that there needs to be something acting on it "a mini explosion to start the "big one"" ) "if i could be bound in a nutshell i could count myself a king of infinite space" Shakespeare were dealing with infinities... but "real scientists" are scared of infinities,so they re-normalize.
Hamporkcheese 1 month ago
@Hamporkcheese What is so wrong about renormalization? Scientists also renormalize in quantum mechanics I rather count up to a 100%. Where does my analogy to your analogy fail? You said an explosion needs an implosion because of action/reaction I showed that it doesn't I didn't say "this is the universe". Furthermore I don't need a "mini explosion" to start the big explosion merely enough energy to start it.

GLANL 1 month ago
@GLANL plus quantum theory does not explain the origin of spin... spin is what makes an atom an atom its what makes a galaxy a galaxy... so the physics must match!!! but at the end of the day quantum theory and Einstein field equation dont match up... I believe, technically speaking, that everybody is an Agnostic. I consider myself to be an Agnostic, because Agnosticism is basically the not knowing of the existence of God. Nobody knows for sure that God exists. It is all faith based, meaning that some people choose to believe that God exists, but in reality nobody knows for sure.
omgitsbrutalbri 2 months ago
@omgitsbrutalbri I don't. You're not agnostic about a magic teapot that grants wishes floating around Saturn. You aren't agnostic about unicorns. Technically speaking in philosophic terms, we can't "know" much of anything. We can be justified in a belief, and there is nothing to indicate the existence of a god or gods. There is no reason to remain undecided on something when there's nothing supporting it. Burden of proof and all that.
PlaguedByEarth 2 months ago
@PlaguedByEarth True, but I believe in ghosts-although there isn't hard proof that they exist. I have just had personal experiences and caught evps (I actually have one I caught on my channel). So I don't want to call myself an atheist, because I'm just not sure. Idk. Just my way of trying to explain my beliefs, or lack there of.
omgitsbrutalbri 2 months ago
@omgitsbrutalbri I thought agnostic applied to ANYTHING not just gods.

An atheist who claims to have more proof than a theist, needs to sit back and

guitaristman23 3 months ago
@guitaristman23 Precisely. Debating ideas, religious or otherwise can only be a good thing. That's how society evolves. Put forward your thoughts on a subject and allow them to be criticised or accepted by others. If you're open minded enough you will see the truth or the better idea and go with it whilst rejecting the old, less-good ideas.
fatmikecj 3 months ago
@guitaristman23 Not to mention that most religions preach the exact opposite of what you have just said for atheists to do. In several of those you are considered a bad person unworthy of salvation if you do not.
Besides the vast majority of the atheist community is not trying to prove or disprove the existence of if a god is possible. What we do here is disprove the existence of specific claims of divinity. You can disprove the god(s) put forward by religions.

@flatop59 Probably another anti-critical thought-er who thinks atheists all believe in the non-existence of a god(s). Theism, pantheism, deism, belief in the non-existence of godism are all on flimsy ground, though not equally flimsy ground by any stretch. Reserving judgement until there is data is truly open minded.

EatCarlSagan 5 months ago
@EatCarlSagan that atheism is a by-product of theism is true, that it's ridiculous to choose the irrational over the rational is naieve, humans--including you--do it all the time. we have needs that our rationality doesn't satisfy. & your distinction between truth & myth is a false one & the reason for these absurd arguments about metaphysical issues being subject to physical proofs. a myth is a cultural truth not a literal one. i don't argue that god doesn't exist, just not literally.
canteluna 5 months ago
@canteluna It may not be rediculous from a self-centered point of view. If someone needs to believe in God in order to not be depressed, then i guess it would be rational to believe, no matter how little evidence they have to justify such a belief. "metaphysical issues being subject to physical proofs", we can't even be sure that there are metaphysical issues, if there are then there's apparently no way to resolve them (at least not ambiguously), and if there aren't (no god?) we cant know it.
EatCarlSagan 5 months ago
@EatCarlSagan i don't see metaphysics as something to resolve. love, good, bad, justice are all in the metaphysical realm. we don't have to show physical evidence for their existence nor do we have to define them exactly the same to believe in them or to have a conversation about them.
my point is that atheists make the same mistake as theists, they both argue about god in literal terms. religion is mythology & god is either a fictitious character or a metaphor.
check out joseph campbell.
canteluna 5 months ago
@canteluna I have to take issue with you saying that atheists and theists make a mistake in arguing about god in literal terms when most theists believe in a literal god. The world would be a very, very different place if believers believed in metaphoric gods that simply represented ideals. Some do, most don't. Most believers believe that their god is very real and a literal entity, not a storybook character. Religion is mythology, but when the stories about gods were written,
Ceenymeeny 5 months ago
@Ceenymeeny The question of god as metaphor is a difficult can of worms to open at this date because ancient people had a different mindset than we do today. You can read Karen Armstrong's The History of God and any number of Jospeh Cambell's books (these are among the most popular), that consider this question. Nevertheless, it's my assertion that, given our scientific progress, religion must be relegated to the realm of myth. Doing so does not diminish it except for fools & the rigid minded.
canteluna 5 months ago
@Ceenymeeny Your claim that gods were created as literal entities: some were, some were not, depends on the culture & the time. I don't see that as relevant. The issue for me is not how to prove or deny the existence of god--that's a fool's game (god in the literal sense does not exist any more than Hamlet existed). The question is how to steer the conversation toward a deeper appreciation of our own myths. Like it or not, the Bible & Jesus are part of our heritage & some of it's worthwhile.
canteluna 5 months ago
@Ceenymeeny Yes, something like 83% of Americans believe the Bible is either the literal word of god or the inspired word of god. You & I are in the 17% that believe the Bible is a collection of stories written by men. It seems crazy to us that anyone could take it literally who no longer believes in Santa Claus but that shows you not only the capacity we have for delusion but also the need we all have for mythology.
We are not simply rational; we need mythology, but which ones?
canteluna 5 months ago
@canteluna they were written by people who believed they really existed. The notion that god is either a fictional character or a metaphor and that anyone who says otherwise is wrong is ridiculous.
