I LOVE KEES!!!!! I have had 5 in my entier life however our 4th got cancer at only 7 years, which had never happened to us before so it was a massive shock, and we were basically told he had 3 days to live! I miss Gracht soo much... It just proves how great Kees are cos this event didn't put us off getting another! Our 5th is called Cuilean, gaelic for puppy and darling, is first face I see in the morning and brights up even my darkest days. I love him to bits! He even won the Arran Show!!!!
We live near Penticton, B.C. and have owned 5 Kees over the year. They were all between 1-5 when they joined our family. We have never had a puppy - but have reserved one from a litter that is due at the end of October. This will be a huge adjustment -mostly for me - I know how much work will be involved - my husband and 2 sons, 13 and 12 are oblivious and are very delirious everytime they see one. Oh my!
Mmm they might get a rude shock!! haha!! Though having so much experience with the breed I'm sure you won't find it too difficult - aside from the sleepless nights. :) Good luck!!
Teddy is 12 weeks now and still does this crazy run around before he falls asleep! He slams himself up against cupboard doors and barks a lot,he doesn`t make cute noises like your kees!!And yes,you are right, you DO need a sense of humour with this breed!!
Oh my gosh! I just had to send my first Keeshond to Doggie Heaven 3 days ago. So this video is heartwarming. And, thankfully, I have a puppy in waiting who was born on the 17th. I love this video clip, remember my boy doing it well, and need to rest up for bringing 'this' home the end of October. I have a 14 year old female rescue Kees who will probably not be pleased at all.
Thanks so much, Terra. What great info. We have a reputable breeder somewhat near; Purrkees in Sarnia, Ontario. We are making inquiries about availability. We have a large house set in the woods here... And lots of walking paths through those woods.
There's an offleash dog park a block away...so lots of room and dog friends nearby too.
Keeshonds and cats usually get along well. They're not a high prey-driven breed, so there shouldn't be any problems so long as they are introduced and socialised well together. There are a lot of kees that share their house with a cat or two.
Jedi spent the first 8 weeks of his life with a cat at the breeder's house. He saw a cat for the first time since he left the breeders (over 1 year ago) and he was perfectly fine with it.
My keeshond does something like that still and she's about 8 years old now. Runs around the house with no reason whatsoever and then stops and starts at it again. I wonder if all keeshonds are like that?
Hey there! We are seriously considering buying a keeshond! they are soo adorable but is there any tips you could give? (we've never owned a dog before but we have two cats - hopefully that wont be a problem)
If you are looking to buy a keeshond, make sure you go through a registered, reputable breeder (not a back yard breeder or a pet store). Reputable breeders test their animals for health problems that are known in the breed and will only breed with animals that are of a high standard. They will also give you a great amount of support and assistance throughout the life of the dog as well. PM me if you'd like more info. I have a few contacts in various countries that could help find a good breeder.
Aww you're planning on getting another one?! Lucky, I want to special order a Female Kee so Turbo wouldn't feel alone. He's getting neutered in 3 days (June 9th,2009) I wanted him to make babies sigh ... cries!!!
You should teach Jedi and Ahsoka to say "I love you"! Turbo's almost getting at it but I have to teach him to stop saying it when I tell him a different command .. hahaha. I'll post a video of Turbo saying it when I can :D !!!
Thanks for the laugh. We're mourning the death of our 12 1/2 year old Keeshond Spirit, and we needed a good chuckle. Spirit was our second, but will not be our last. There is not another breed that is as loving and lovable.
Oh yeah, the puppy crazies. My Keeshonden did this when they were babies. SO FUNNY! Oh and there is just nothing cuter than a Keeshond puppy...they are adorable! I miss my 2 being so little and cute. GREAT DOGS aren't they?

No problem! Good luck! Don't forget your sense of humour with this breed - they are very cheeky! But that's why we love them!

A medium-sized house should be fine for 1 kees, so long as you give them regular exercise.
