  • This is so wonderful and great! I love it forever!!!

  • I Love you Chan! Last year I was going here in Brasil to see you in Sao Jose dos Campos, when...a bike crashed on me...the doctors prepared my family for the worst, but I survived!! Every time a listen to the live version of He was a Friend of mine, I couldnt stop crying too..And will be marvelous to see you again in Brasil, hope I can see your show" Kisses

  • ouch , this is so painful to hear... so human and beautiful

  • melancholy but absolutely beautiful. . . .

  • she is so goddamn talented it's unreal.

  • r.i.p cory burns. i will always love you.

  • ((( ♥ )))

  • Sad she has problems with stage freight I love her and wish she'd do another album :(

  • @F00LSG0LD215 Stage freight - why does she have to carry all the sound equipment on and off stage? - or do you mean Stage fright? (joking aside...)

Cat Power is fabulous, I wish she would come to the UK more often... Really want to see her live so bad

  • aw :( poor chan...

  • Brilliant. Thanks

  • So painful to hear... and still so beautiful.

  • i feel her pain..

  • There are no words for how heartbreakingly gorgeous this is.

  • anyone know why she is crying? did she lose someone?

  • she herself told us in a interview time ago :) and, realize.. you are the only one who believes she's "recovering from a laugh" :) cheers

  • 179,750 views? why are they only counting my views?

  • This song reminds me of one of my friends they died on the road miles away from home.

  • Interesting cover. I'm familiar with the original Byrds song. However readaptations are a big part of folk music. The tune of our national anthem was taken by Francis Scott Key from a drinking song that was popular at the time.

  • My favorite version is by Dave van Ronk singing it at a tribute concert for Phil Ochs. You knew every line was personal for van Ronk.

  • @nailswood Yes. I can still him in my mind, all those years later, singing the line about "never had much money for sufficient clothes", and there were times, in Phil's last years, as mental illness ravaged his life, where that was the case with Phil(at one point, the only clothes he still owned were his now-ruined "Gold Lame Suit". That was the most heartbreaking song sung that night.

  • Willie Nelson's version is the best

  • i heard better, and ive heard alot worse.with a style, and voice like that, this girl is taking her life in her hands performing in the public!,wow what a brave girl, lets give her a hand, and some more pain pills

  • I'm pretty sure she's laughing. The way she comes back into it around 1:24 just seems like she's recovering from a laugh.

  • @repdale or a cry.

  • @repdale she's crying, actually.

  • @yasminecop Well, yeah. Cause you definately know.

  • somebody needs some zoloft

  • this song still gives me chills.

  • Realize that your not looking at the focal point, this was a song she decided to sing because it was about a sad time in her life not to just do a cover off of the original she sang it with a heavy heart and was bearly able to sing it and that in itself was beautiful.

  • why is she crying??? in that way..... she is gona make cry too.....

  • is she crying ?

  • 10 people dont have friends

  • dylan´s version is much better than this...I love chan and a lot of her songs, she´s a great artist! but I don´t like the way she sings this version...her performance is too lazy for a sad song.

  • @antifarsas You should check out Dave Van Ronk's version! I think that's where Dylan learned it from. Great energy there.

  • Love this artist.

  • can i download this version of the song?? PLEASE I'M PRAYING YOU

  • awww...is she crying? simply powerful.

  • she is such a great singer and puts soul and pasion in all of her songs

  • This song was a small hit in the 60s for a group called Dian and the Greenbriar Boys. It goes well back in folk history. It's to her credit that she knows about it, even though she takes it in her own direction. I'd love to hear her sing it in the more traditional way, but what the hell, Chan does things her own way because she's an artist and she don't look back. It's impossible not to love this kid.

  • ehhh, i don't dig. but it's all good. I think I just prefer Dylan's sentiment

  • She took a song written by The Byrds about the death of JFK and she made it her own. That's what artists do!!!!!!

  • @jax1sam1 dude what r u talking about this is an old folk song that has been around for generations i mean Dave Van Ronk sang it Bob Dylan sang it The Bryds sang it and Cat Powers did a cover on it so chill. and in my opion the bryds butchered the song

  • I'm so happy to hear her crying while singing this particular song! There are only a few artists left who actually feel the meaning of the words they're singing, and the emotions behind those words! Aaaah,i love her!

  • above and beyond

    the chatter,

    sublime

  • sigh :( it reminds me of so much

  • @MCFCbellamy well bob dylan did cry in newport in 1965 when he got booed for playing his first electric gig

  • laughing (crying?) off key, not good

  • ....I feel like she cut the lyrics short in this version. Totally understandable, seeing as she was crying her way threw it. I found myself really wanting to give her a hug.

and as for the people asking what this song is about- it's pretty self explanatory. It strait up says that the friend she is referring to "died on the road". If she is singing about him, it's a pretty safe bet that she is also thinking about him. Thats enough to make anyone break down in tears.

  • @RavissantJules

you guys are fucking idiots, this is a traditional folk song

  • @gimmeskatebaording duh. no shit. Its been a song forever. We all know that. But the lyrics do hold meaning. And she has previously talked about how badly the death of one of her close friends effected her. Believe it or not- people besides yourself know good music.

  • I Think most of us have a friend of ours that if we tried to sing this song might just break us down as well ...All depends on what happened in your life.. I know alotta My friends are gone. A Loss of a Relationship can feel this hard as well..That's why I could never sing Whiskey Lullaby ...You'd have to have lived it to know why..

  • this is really difficult to listen to : ( beautiful though.

  • i do not see a link

    poor chan, shes my friend

  • That is always my biggest fear as a singer...you can't sing and cry at the same time. Love this version of this song.

  • is there an mp3 of this pls??

  • see the link. there ya can download the mp3

  • what did i fail in ur opinion....? the fact that im curious to know smth.

only fools sit there & dnt try to figure out stuff

  • @Lola

Hi Lola, well maybe I'm trying to figure out stuff .. but thats all we do all our lives ...till we die, then we stop.

For me its an achingly beautiful song, and Bob paints enough of the picture to present it but not so much that we can't interpret ... so maybe Cat interpreted .... and it overcame her.

I have no idea why she is crying but I can understand that this song might reduce her to tears.

I still cant listen to "Every Grain of Sand" without crying. Go figure!

  • I dont see the bad in tryin to figure out smth...its humane nature.

Well at least ur response to me, had some sense. by trying to explain me ur point of view!

  • @rcoates07 the truth is this one: her best friend really died. how is she always crying? well, let's see: mental illness problems in her family, the death of her best friend, abortion, failed relationships, drinking and drug problems. it's easy to understand why she's crying. i can't imagine how her life affects her... if she wants to cry, just let her...cry.

  • @ minttness

    yes you're right.

its a really touching song- i nearly cried when I first heard it.

Chan's an amazing singer. I hope she makes it big.=)

  • its such a beatiful song and the nice part is that i can relate to it its just beatiful in every way imaginable she is an amazing singer. =)

  • the fact that she breaks down is the most beautiful thing about it.

  • i love how she puts feeling in her music

  • love this, but Willie Nelson's is still the best I think

  • why is she cryin? what for?

  • Because it's a sad song, I guess.

  • was she crying?!!

  • wish this song would be endless...

  • Finally! I've been looking for this song all day.

  • this is a real artist who sings and feels what she's singing inside her heart... I love Chan, she amazing!

  • wow. amazing.

  • i like it better than bob dylan's

  • Comment removed

  • its not quite halfway thru is it, its sort of seconds into the song.

this is an amazing cover and its beautiful shes got such an amazing voice, but the fact she just breaks down isnt in itself beautiful.

  • fuckkkk

  • i don't think any song has ever given me chills like this one just did, truly beautiful.

  • I'm glad she has someone to cry over and record the crying. Most people cry and it's lost.

  • wow!

  • Heartbreaking.

  • Regardless of her losing composure during the song. This is still undoubtedly a stunning version of this song.

  • This is honest.

  • i love you Chan Marshall

  • This is the best thing i have ever heard and my friend who's next to me is a mjor bitch whore cuz he's laughing at her

  • eugh. I've lost one too.

  • What is the point in complaining? Why should she be #1 of anything? She's a icon that stands out independently. She have many good albums in different moods and styles and lately are doing some very good, sober concerts. Saw her last summer and I had chills in my whole body through the whole set.

  • lol. emily haines is rather superficial, the furthest thing from cat power. i like a few of her songs, but i could never cry to them.

funny that i don't like most of the people on that list. go watch their videos instead, we'll stick with chan

  • Is Emily Haines really superficial?

She always seemed really genuine to me, and she has a great voice.

Chan does have more soul though <3

  • Comment removed

  • Emily haines? are you serious?

  • fyi Feist (whom i am very fond of) is a cheap imitation/ canadian version of cat power so before you start rambling bout how great cat power used to be think before using fake and full of nonsense arguments!

  • I am so glad that someone else has picked up on this. Feist got no soul!

  • whats wrong with liking them both. i hate unnecessary conflict. i think they are both great.

  • wow that's incredible.

  • I think the mid sixties byrds version sounds better to me

  • i agree

  • I love to listen to all version.

I think they are all great.

  • so, so beautiful.

sometimes the saddest things are the most beautiful things.

    lovely.

  • yeah, agreed.

    definetly.

  • Meraviglioso.Semplicemente Meraviglioso.

  • sehr gefühlvoll...

  • loved the bob dylan song but her cover is really good too!

I saw one of her concerts in here :

    centralmusical. com. pt/?c=6619

  • beautiful

  • Chan and her ex-boyfriend blues...

  • a little tip:

listen to her cover of fleetwood mac's "dreams" during this session as well. It's equally breath taking.

  • sobbing? i think she's actually stifling a laugh. listen to her sing when she comes out of it. Someone probably just made a face in the studio.

  • no she is definitely crying. i find this really hard to listen to because of it. i remember reading that her best friend died in a car crash in the early 90s.

  • i think that this recording is so beautiful; not just in the sound but the emotion of it all. also good job on choosing the picture for this, she looks beautiful and it's a good fit for the song. :-)

  • Chan Chan eu te venero!

  • wow. fantastic

  • sorry i thought that i was commenting on this other video i had up. :/

  • Monroe is a street in Atlanta.

  • can i have a copy of this?

  • can i have a copy of this?

  • i think its a combo of both.

  • those who dug that comment down are complete and utter retards. this is AN OLD FOLK SONG, Chan Marshall is not crying over the fictional friend she has lost. If you listen to the entire interview, it's clear she is in high spirits.

  • I am rubber, you are glue.

  • where can i listen to the entire interview? I would love to hear it!

  • jesus god, that's incredible.

  • WOW

  • Its a bob dylan song.

  • acctually bob dylan covered it

  • wrote it

  • no he didn't

  • imabookie3 is correct. it is a traditional folk ballad .dylan only covered it using JFK lyrics, and the byrds covered Dylan's version. a cover of a cover. and mcguinn actually took writing credits for it because he was a douchebag.

  • no, covered it

  • She is crying while she sings. It is so sad.
