How would you recommend bustling a gown that has box pleats in the back? I really like the French bustle, but I don't know how to approach adding my own bustle! The box pleats are throwing me off!
@kristeemc2russia - Great question! Yeah, box pleats are tough, aren't they? You could try a French bustle in several places, at the same height, inside each pleat, if there aren't too many pleats. This wouldn't throw off the pleats, just sort of fold them all evenly. I hope that makes sense? Or you could do a 'pick-up' bustle (also called an 'American bustle'); google those terms you'll find lots of images. Personally I think the French bustle looks more elegant. Best of luck!! and Congrats!
@Julie9409LT - Thanks so much, Julie! That's really excellent that you'll be saving some money by doing it yourself. Every little bit helps!
That's exactly what we wanted: to show people how we bustle our gowns and take the mystery out of it. We send this link to many of our clients so that they know how to do it themselves when their Big Day comes.
I agree with the others that this is probably the best video I have seen regarding bustling a dress. Other videos show you how a bustled train should look, but they don't show you HOW to actually do it. I was going to take my wedding dress to a tailor to have a bustle put in, but now I'm just going to save some money and do it myself! So simple - thank you!
This was a VERY VERY informative video. I think I'll do the ribbon option since I'm not a big fan of buttons. But, I can't say thanks enough for posting this!
@ConsciousElegance1 Oh, I know it'll be great! My mom saw this video a few hours after I did, and we're DEFINATELY going with the ribbon option. My mom's been a seamstress for OVER 40 years, and she was impressed with this and is taking ideas....so def. great info. =)
@Celticswynd - Heya! I'm flattered that you asked. But sadly, I've never seen Titanic (I know how it ends and I really don't want to go there). I know, I know, it's costume Heaven. ;-/
I did do an image search on Rose's red dress to see if I could help you, but I couldn't find any views of a train or a bustle. Sorry I couldn't be more helpful. If you sent me a link to a picture of what you meant, I might be able to [drapery] weigh in? (all puns intended)
What would you recommend for bustling a Teens era reproduction dress, with a square train, (and underskirt underneath the train.) Think the red dress Rose wears in the attempted suicide scene in Titanic, except the overprice is a red satin, and the train is not quite as long. The square train is weighted with drapery weights. I tried on my own, but I ended up with a junk in the trunk look.
Yes, it's a french bustle, at least as I understand french bustles to be. My understanding is that the french bustles are tucked up underneath and fastened usually with ribbons (as in the video). In contrast, american bustles (also called 'overbustles') are pulled up on the outside of the skirt, such as when one is taking up a train in the back, pulling up the hem of the train towards the waist.
@iamaprinces1990- Bustling a long train is a lot like bustling a shorter one. The principles are the same: you take a point that's low on the skirt and bring it up to a higher point. You can do this more than once along a seam and make it a multiple bustle to take up more fabric. There's lots of images of bustles online to give some ideas.
(sorry if this isn't much help; it's hard to say more without seeing the actual skirt)
You are truly amazing.. thank you so much for this video. I was in tears because I have a gown with a royal train and no bustle, and couldn't afford to pay anyone to do it for me. This is totally doable and I'm able to sew well enough that I can do this. Thank you thank you thank you!!!!! :)

Wow, oh my gosh. I just bought my dress and I started worrying that I don't have a built-in bustle. After watching your video, I feel a giant weight off my shoulders. I can easily put in my own bustle! Thank you so much!!!

thank you thank you thank you for making this video.
I have some (first level) professional garment making training (industrial machines, pattern drafting, etc.), I have made plenty of garments ranging from PJs to historical costumes... and yet I couldn't find ANYWHERE to tell me specifically what the ideal method of attachment for bustle points are. I especially love the ideas of the colour coded ribbons! :)
