The Doors movie was amusing and fun, but thats it. I just bought this doc. and besides all the footage i hadn't seen on The Doors now I've got the accurate picture of them.
@themightymufin there was the doors movie with val kilmer and the actual story about the doors, its actually really good but i didnt really like the one with kilmer cause they made jim morrison an asshole!
I thought the movie was very well made, val kilmer was Jim Morrison in that film he was briliant, im sure somethings werent quite to the T at times but it was still a great movie.
Everyone is a critic, I loved the film, but I would have liked a talking head in the film. Anyhow, it was a brilliant movie. I felt sorry for Jim being so hooked on alcohol...it's horrible watching someone suffer from addiction like that.
wow everyone looked super old..myabe Jim did the right thing lol cant wait to see this movie..Narrated by Johnny Depp, American Masters: When Youre Strange is the first feature documentary about The Doors, premiering nationally Wednesday, May 12, 2010 at 9 p.m. (ET) on PBS (check local listings)
I'm sorry, but I have to add something else. Jim Morrison was soooooooo DAMN FINE!!!!!!!!!!! If I were alive back then (I'm 35) I'd be aaaaallllllll over THAT! He's like Michael Angelo's David....for REAL!!!! That man was beautiful!!! And an amazing voice too! I don't understand how some people say he couldn't sing....BULLSHIT!!! Love his voice...everything!!!
This is great! I am a huge Doors fan! I think I'm more than a fan. They're my favorite band ever! I have every album and I think poster ever made!!! I have a lot anyways! This is great seeing you guys all together just chilling and talking about things! Amazing! I wish Jim were still with us though.
Manzarek, stop acting like an rock star and stop smashing the Morrison bones, u r and was a Vainilla guy, trying to be an mystic duuuuuuude, and ur poor pet Krieger, just fallow ur stupids comments
"Four friends came together"? Well, not exactly. More like two guys who were sort of friends in college decided to start a band and needed a guitar player who also knew a drummer. Thus THE DOORS were born. Any "friendships" (between Jim and the others)that began at that point were pretty much dissolved within 3 or 4 years.
check it out fools, in two hundred years, if we still have a society, people will be asking about these Doors guys. We are lucky enough to get to see them in person, and Densmore is a good drummer but his book was pretty pathetic, but I'm still lucky to be "first person".
Seriously? I liked the Doors movie, I agree though, Stone didn't capture Morrison right, he almost made him seem like an arrogant alcoholic asshole. But I am a big fan of Val Kilmer and I think he just played the part he was given and played it well. Anyways I don't know how much room I have to talk cause I'm not a hardcore Doors fan, I am basically a newbie at this stuff haha. I'm a metalhead and I think the Doors may be the only classic rock band worth listening to.
Cause I think the beatles suck, the stones were alright, but Jim Morrison was just so interesting and his voice was probably the most amazing thing in music history.
ray and robbie aren't the doors.... they're salesmen who wear their souls on their faces..... if jim were alive today, he'd be ashamed of them.......... john is the only true doors member left.........
when jim was alive, they sold light my fire to a car commercial and he was far from thrilled....... besides, you know jim as well as i do, i don't think you're in any position to say i'm wrong....... happy new year by the way.............
first of all thank you. Happy new year to you as well. if you havent read it yet i suggest you pick up a book on him called life death legend or something akin to that out of the four books i read about the doors i felt that was the most informative.
well i agree with the jim part. but ray and all of them sorta wennt off with that after jims death. they moved on they already made their footprint on society
Oliver Stone my have created of load of hogwash in terms of truthful fact. But he definitely delivered a new audience and a truckload of keen fans to the doorsteps of desperate Doors shareholders. Will we see the impact both in fan base increase, and box office earnings from When You're Strange? Not if the TRUTH has anything to do with it. Keep your anecdotal truths and precious Doors facts; I'm going on the ride.
Time and dementia has mellowed the remaining Doors to such an extent, they only reminisce the Morrison era with nostalgic romanticism and times forgotten rhetoric. Check out previous documentary interviews by the remaining Doors pre Oliver Stone and you will find during the anecdotal individual interviews, they did nothing but bitch about Morrisons antics and behaviour. Great musicians but contradicting tossers.

This movie is the best thing that could have happened financially to the remaining Doors, lets face it, the remaining Doors were just a back up band, or a vehicle to assist in the launching of a career of one of the most charismatic and enigmatic singers in rock history.
I hate seeing the remaining Doors bitching about Oliver Stones interpretation of Jim Morrisons life as if they fucking own the guy. The Doors movie is what rekindled interest in the band some 20 years after Morrison die
I think it´s a little pretentious to claim that there is such a thing as "the real story" or the definitive version about anything. Everybody remembers o thinks about these events in many different ways, especially the people directly involved in them.
I´m a long time Doors fan and I know that most of what Oliver Stone shows in his movie is a lot of crap, but I´m also a HUGE Oliver Stone fan and I have to say that, on it´s own, "The Doors" is fine piece of cinema.

Jim Morrison could see the world as it was really.
People haunting their career and ruin other people's life because they think they are "better" then mediocre people.
I can appreciate your passionate perspective, in regards to the previous comments I made on the remaining doors, but I have come across this type of self indulgent and narcissistic behavior before from other bands. In the end, it just stirs up nostalgia from old fans, and confuses new fans, I say; let the music speak for itself.

Sometimes I feel the remaining Doors tend to live and thrive off the carcass of what was one James Douglas Morrison, and exist off the remnants of an era of turmoil, which occurred more than forty years ago. They have romanticized Jim Morrison to such mythical and multi-dimensional proportions; it is difficult to recognize that he was just a singer/songwriter. Dont embarrass and belittle yourselves by continually flogging this dead horse for your own selfish agendas.
I loved the Doors as a band in their heyday, and still play their music, but I think the Doors myth has grown so distorted and unfamiliar; it is hard to recognise whether Ray is selling a consumer product or genuinely trying to maintain an interest in the Doors music, values and principles to a new generation of fans. I happen to think the former.
Doors Fest April 2002. I ask Ray Manzarek " would you be interested in a new more factual film about The Doors?"
His answer: " No way man, no way I lived it man, really no way man."
I wonder if that whore had anything to do with this film's production?
Mentions Paul Ferrara but doesn't mention Frank Lisciandro or Babe Hill that also shot this footage. Raymond Daniel Mnaczarek is a whore peddeling dead flesh.
oliver Stones version wasnt even all true, it was all lies thats why they are saying this film is based on the truth i dont know about the guy that portrayed jim but i prefer seeing the real jim Morrison...
dude he sued them for what i was talking about that is an asshole thing, then suing with Morison's dad that is extremely gay, and he is an asshole, he was not a good drummer, he put some Hispanic beats on to make it sound hard it was easy.
he felt using TheDoors name wasn't right and a court agreed, He sued in conjunction with both holders of the Morrison estate,Steve Morrison and Corky Courson. Gay? Easy? Son you are greasy!
way to make one of the worst rhymes i have ever heard, and yes they were easy. That is still sueing with them, you reworded what i said that doesn't change the fact he did. And they used the name the doors after Jim died, he is a hypocrite.
Why don't they have a prerequisite ode to the audience (that are primarily educated Doors fans) that "the interview here barely acknowledges Oliver Stone's version... (with good reason!) The thing is: IS that the band (and truly educated public DOORS fan) shouldn't be dissing Kilmer.. Dude did alright portraying Morrison.. Its the manner in which they (Stone) portrayed MoJo is what brings the film down... Tragic Genius.. The intrigue should have been placed on his intellectual self-awareness...
he portrayed the alcoholic crazy side of Morrison brilliantly however the movie didnt make much of an effort to portray the sensitive poet intellectual side of morrison.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
I feel The Doors made a huge mistake allowing this guy to direct a movie with this type of intimate and historic film footage. The result of When Youre Strange has come off as little more than a DVD supplement; Oliver Stones version of Jim Morrisons life may have had its flaws, but it was by far, better researched and more creatively directed by Stone.
Researched? What color is the sky on the planet you are from? That was not Jim's real personality and it portrayed events that never happened. It was trash.
Honestly, 98% of the Doors doco created by Tom Dicillo could have been downloaded from Doors archival video footage off YouTube and edited by an amateur undergraduate filmmaker. The film implies Doors 101 for dummies, and is creatively incompetent.
I have read reviews of the new film that indicates that the main content, pathos and chronological sequences of events were previously covered in the Doors movie.
IMHO, stakeholders in the bands legacy tend to like to maintain the mythical sensationalistic side of the doors in the collective psyche for their own personal agendas. They just dont like respected directors like Oliver Stone creating the agendas.
Come on Ray,Release the Whole Isle of Wight concert or the Toronto Festival. These are the footage we never got to see. This movie looks like feast of friends meets Hwy. All footage thats already out there put together.
Ray does seem to be a bit of a knob. I`ve read loads of books on the doors and the oliver stone movie wasn`t that bad. PLus %99.9 of the footage here has already been seen.
The 'director' seems like more of a knob. As they implied, the story's already written so he's a glorified editor, really. Looking forward to seeing it, though.
Stone's movie is and will always be pure junk. Characters were created, events portrayed that never happened. WAKE UP! Kilmer played Jim as a unfocusing monotone dolt. The real Morrison was a lot deeper than Stone ever let on.
looking at the footage here-- NONE OF IT IS NEW - its been available all over the place for years. the footage of Jim in the car is from his movie Feast of Friends.
densmore sure doesnt feel that way hmoon. look ray is very talented & obviously a key component of their talents. I just feel the guy discredits the bands great legacy when he spouts all his bs. frankly it comes off explotiative, all the hippy guru, satyrs jumping out of jim's ass bs. get real, its pretty transparent the dude's let his ego/greed out of control. the dated new age psycho-babble & jim=God is so obvious a front to add another villa in the wine valley. john is right, jim would puke.

WHERE IS JOHN DENSMORE???
willypaul7 2 years ago
yah wtf he needs to bury the hatchet with ray and robbie and move on
fogdog60 2 years ago
he left the doors
kopaygorod 2 years ago
he is an ass he and morrison's dad(who jim strongly disliked if not hated) sued ray and robbie for i believe 2 million for using the name the doors.
jbizzle2326 2 years ago
Not sure what he sued for but John Densmore is no asshole and he won in court.
PepperWhite62 2 years ago
dude he sued them for what i was talking about that is an asshole thing, then suing with Morison's dad that is extremely gay, and he is an asshole, he was not a good drummer, he put some Hispanic beats on to make it sound hard it was easy.
jbizzle2326 2 years ago
he felt using TheDoors name wasn't right and a court agreed, He sued in conjunction with both holders of the Morrison estate,Steve Morrison and Corky Courson. Gay? Easy? Son you are greasy!
PepperWhite62 2 years ago
way to make one of the worst rhymes i have ever heard, and yes they were easy. That is still sueing with them, you reworded what i said that doesn't change the fact he did. And they used the name the doors after Jim died, he is a hypocrite.
jbizzle2326 2 years ago
they aren't the doors without jim, they are old now, let them do their own things

the interviewer is a fucking idiot
harveydents 2 years ago 3
Why don't they have a prerequisite ode to the audience (that are primarily educated Doors fans) that "the interview here barely acknowledges Oliver Stone's version... (with good reason!) The thing is: IS that the band (and truly educated public DOORS fan) shouldn't be dissing Kilmer.. Dude did alright portraying Morrison.. Its the manner in which they (Stone) portrayed MoJo is what brings the film down... Tragic Genius.. The intrigue should have been placed on his intellectual self-awareness...
bwil0401 2 years ago 6
he portrayed the alcoholic crazy side of Morrison brilliantly however the movie didnt make much of an effort to portray the sensitive poet intellectual side of morrison.
fogdog60 2 years ago 2
Great!!Can't wait for it!!And the most nice thing about this movie is that Jim Morrison is not going to be replaced by no one!!

The host of this is a dick. Good interview though.

This comment has received too many negative votes show
I feel The Doors made a huge mistake allowing this guy to direct a movie with this type of intimate and historic film footage. The result of When Youre Strange has come off as little more than a DVD supplement; Oliver Stones version of Jim Morrisons life may have had its flaws, but it was by far, better researched and more creatively directed by Stone.
Rusty0555 2 years ago
Researched? What color is the sky on the planet you are from? That was not Jim's real personality and it portrayed events that never happened. It was trash.
PepperWhite62 2 years ago
Honestly, 98% of the Doors doco created by Tom Dicillo could have been downloaded from Doors archival video footage off YouTube and edited by an amateur undergraduate filmmaker. The film implies Doors 101 for dummies, and is creatively incompetent.
Rusty0555 2 years ago
yea but not alot. because from what im told, they have actuall footage from miami. no thats not on youtube
kendostick58 2 years ago
No video footage, only audio.
Rusty0555 2 years ago
yea. but they acctually have video for the movie
kendostick58 2 years ago
I have read reviews of the new film that indicates that the main content, pathos and chronological sequences of events were previously covered in the Doors movie.
IMHO, stakeholders in the bands legacy tend to like to maintain the mythical sensationalistic side of the doors in the collective psyche for their own personal agendas. They just dont like respected directors like Oliver Stone creating the agendas.

Yeah Ray does let his ego get out of control. He acts as if he was the only one who new Jim. Its crazy to think Jim`s Dad is still alive.

Come on Ray,Release the Whole Isle of Wight concert or the Toronto Festival. These are the footage we never got to see. This movie looks like feast of friends meets Hwy. All footage thats already out there put together.
johndavid1969 3 years ago
Ray does seem to be a bit of a knob. I`ve read loads of books on the doors and the oliver stone movie wasn`t that bad. PLus %99.9 of the footage here has already been seen.
orbital92hotmail 3 years ago
The 'director' seems like more of a knob. As they implied, the story's already written so he's a glorified editor, really. Looking forward to seeing it, though.
dancindandanson 3 years ago
Stone's movie is and will always be pure junk. Characters were created, events portrayed that never happened. WAKE UP! Kilmer played Jim as a unfocusing monotone dolt. The real Morrison was a lot deeper than Stone ever let on.
PepperWhite62 2 years ago 4
densmore never is around is he?
reznorfan15 3 years ago
looking at the footage here-- NONE OF IT IS NEW - its been available all over the place for years. the footage of Jim in the car is from his movie Feast of Friends.

Ray is goof. He signed of on the Stone movie-- now he condems it

I agree...I've got to see this. I hope it really does have new footage.

Man I wish I could see this film NOW. I'm in tears, just verklempft or whatever that word is. I want to see all the rare footage.
Kelvin, I think Ray is just outgoing and fairly high energy. Most of the time he's just riffing, just goofing - he means no harm :)
HuntersMoon73 3 years ago
densmore sure doesnt feel that way hmoon. look ray is very talented & obviously a key component of their talents. I just feel the guy discredits the bands great legacy when he spouts all his bs. frankly it comes off explotiative, all the hippy guru, satyrs jumping out of jim's ass bs. get real, its pretty transparent the dude's let his ego/greed out of control. the dated new age psycho-babble & jim=God is so obvious a front to add another villa in the wine valley. john is right, jim would puke.
kelvinkloud 3 years ago
They should have shown more rare clips in the preview, every other shot is already available on some Doors collection DVD.
