I agree with TonsofFun. The idea of the burger came from Hamburg, but the dish itself wasn't a burger per se. It was a piece of steak stuck between two slices mof bread. A burger is grind meat, not a piece of meat.

It was invented in 1899 in New Haven Mass. The original place where it was invented still exists today, and they serve burgers between regular bread slices as it was originally intended.
