Though Frank must have definitely been a friend of one of theirs to have scored this gig, you can tell even he was overwhelmed by it at the end. It's got to feel amazing to be able to play with really skilled musicians instead of whiny, pissy has-beens like who he works for now....

i love this video, for the sole reason it shows how amazing TOOL is, first 3 minutes with frank kinda sucked, then he gets up and shakes danny's hand, he goes back to his set and begins to play again, and its amazing from there on out, its like he was blessed by the touch of danny's hands and could play better

tool is my second favourite band but..seeing a drum "duel" live was extremely disappointing. always have 1. the opposing drummer's mics turned way down so you can barely hear them, if at all. 2. some sort of godly lighting on danny and shitty lighting on the other guy. seeing a duel like this is essentially seeing tool get together and spit on another musician's talent. danny's good enough to beat anyone they tour with in a duel... why not just cut the crap and make it fair?

Second, please don't ever take the camera off the drums during a drum duel. The lights and visuals at this point are remotely secondary to the action that is taking place on stage.

i went to a tool mini show in nyc ( second last of the mini tour) while in line for any left over tickets, I saw chris meloni and his co-star from oz (the guy who play beacher and who was in waynes world as the guy that say "i love you man" waynes buddy). Thats was cool, so they were like 11 rows in front of me on the floor at this 2,250 venue named city center (mostly theater stuff) but trey and mike gordon of phish were six rows behind me and alex grey was second row. $140 & tool, amazin

Thats not the first time they've done a drum battle and its also not the first time that the competitors drums weren't as loud.

I think of it this way, if he wants to stay for the rest of the song, the dude that has to play a certain passage has to be heard more (Danny in this case) and the other drummer (Frank) compliments by adding on the top.

As far as I know, its always a bad idea to mess with sound levels live.

And, well face it, Frank did pretty good without being mic'd that much.

You are 100 percent correct on messing too much with sound levels live... ESPECIALLY with drums. However it's not just that his drums aren't loud enough, but it's also that his kit has a completely different kind of sound. It's not meant to be loud and thunderous, it's a little more a "subtlety" kind of kit, meant for accenting ghost notes, and complexities. IOW Frank's kit sits in the treble more. So regardless of sound levels, Danny's low booming kit will always prevail.
