i am thinking of picking up either sitar or sarod. can someone please explain the major differences? i've been playing the guitar for almost 5 years and recently i have been obsessed with this kind of music, so hypnotizing
sitar has movable frets and it's resonator is made of gourd with a wooden plate on top
sarod is fretless, played with your nails (not the flesh of the fingertips), and it's resonator is made of hollowed wood with goat skin stretched across it (similar to banjo in this aspect).
There is no school that uses the tip of the finger exclusively to finger the strings on the sarod like on many other string instruments.
There are some schools that use LESS of the nail in conjunction with more of the fingertip, but the nail is always applied. It is not possible to create a clean sound on the sarod without using the nail.
Indian instruments are not like Western instruments in that there is not just one standard tuning. The instrument is tuned based on what raga is going to be played.
You can tune this instrument chromatically but for proper North Indian music it needs to be tuned to the North Indian scale, which is not equally tempered.
Hi Govinda, maybe it is time for us to work on some new Gatewhey songs. You have inspired me to rework our video "Friends Inside" where you are playing some awesome sitar. Peace my friend. You know I love your talent brother! Gatewhey
Take us to Heaven Govinda, my talented musician friend!

i was wondering if you'd be able to point me in the right direction as to where to get one of these Sarods

@SaintsCheat He is playing the Tambura. It is played as an accompaniment to the lead vocalist or instrument. Check Tambura on wiki....

Great! I'm seriously starting to think about buying a sarod. But can you tell me how it's tuned?
