Someone commented that these guys weren' t in shape??? These days you have a bunch of well conditioned pansies. These two guys would KILL many fighters of today.
I can't help thinking that if Lyle had just kept his gloves up and thrown another few upper cuts he would have won it. He was just wide open to Foreman's right hand. That's never a good idea.
Here is the thing about a boxers chin its not the physical aspect that keeps you standing its the warrior aspect if you have the heart of a warrior your not gonna go down easy....
Both men were so spent, it almost looked as if there was no power behind their punches. But I'm sure either of these warriors could have told you that each punch was like getting hit by a sledgehammer. Two legends!
Foreman had sledge hammer punches they don't have to go far or have much speed but when they land it shook men down to their jewels. Ask any of his 70+ ko victims. I believe he could just raise his arm and let it fall and if it hit you it's lights out
Ron Lyle, who learned to box while in prison for murder and went on to fight Muhammad Ali for the heavyweight championship and wage a memorably furious battle with George Foreman, died on Saturday in Denver. He was 70.
The cause was complications of a stomach abscess, his sister, Sharon Dempsey, told The Denver Post.
There where quite a few hits from both fighters that, any lesser boxer would need MRI to check for cranial bleeding/swelling. Literally there where hits that reminded me of a man getting hit down below, you wince even though it isn't you. Even there slow motion exasperated ditch effort punches where knock out quality. There legs where only mildly inconvenienced by these punches. I think there resilience is nothing short of amazing.
Tsyon couldn't fight good heavyweights. Overrated, fought chumps. Got whipped when he fought some of the better heavyweights of his time. Wouldn't gotten killed against earlier big-time heavyweights. Couldn't take punches from good heavyweights.
mike tyson v foreman. all i have to say is it won't last 6 rounds. and tyson had better not try to duck an uppercut like frazier did. foreman pushed though he's got a big shot.
@ZigZagRunner In my opinion, a 40 would have defeated a 19 year old Mike Tyson: Tyson has NEVER faired well against tall opponents (save for Frank Bruno); Foreman had at least a 20 year head-start in experince & he still had a viscious overhand right ....... oh, and one more thing, Foreman ACTUALLY started utilizing 'Boxing' skillz late in hiz career
@megavwfwood early tyson was very fast and sound defensively not to mentions his power that greats like evander holyfield and lewis had to neutralise with clinching and pushing. although foreman did push and keep range. but underrated fighters like moorer easily outsped and hit him. if foreman could land uppercuts tyson would be going home early. but i truly don't think foremans chin was good enough to stand up to tyson even though it is a truly great chin.
@ZigZagRunner But Tyson's punches were so good because he could get leverage, you can't get true leverage on a taller opponent and Tyson wasn't a real fan of body blows. Secondly Foreman has felled fighters with legendary chins e.g. Norton & Frazier ..... Foreman was almost able to rock my favorite fighter (Ali); but in the end, i think tyson was in their class, however, would have been no competition for Ali, Frazier or Foreman. But, then again, no one could match up with 'The Big Three'.
@XenoType008 Ali couldnt fight like that any more. Everyone should be intimidated by foremans power and i dont see how the rope a dope was ignorant. Ali won what looked like an unwinnable fight and he didnt do such things so people who have no idea what their talking about can spout bs on youtube =]
It still amazes me HOW EITHER of them withstood such a brutal pounding! These are 2 of the heaviest hitters of their time power shooting BOMBS! Incredible action just incredible!

Just a quick comment. Compare to the shape Roy Jones Jr. and Mike Tyson on their Primes, Foreman and Lyle look out of shape to me.- They needed to be in much way much better shape.
@theonlysaltspring The point I was trying to make is that they needed to be in better shape. I also put Tyson, Ali, as example, Royn Jones Jr. as well, Especially Roy Jones Jr. In his prime Roy Jones was like Tyson the very best of their times
Foreman was finished after he fought Ali. Prior to that he was invincible. He is a big bloke and a heavy hitter. At his best he would beat almost every heavyweight since Larry Holmes including Tyson and Lewis (who was a much greater champion than people realize). He would destroy the 2 Ukrainians. To call him out of shape shows you know nothing of boxing or the fighters.
@acraven123 The only thing I would disagree with was him being finished after fighting Ali...George had personal issues and lost that instinct for survival..in short..he didnt give a shit about himself or anything...when he had his spiritual epiphany..he found himself once again...to this day I laugh till my sides hurt when I see Michael Moorer still in denial over the knockout....
Don't see it like this anymore. Two of the hardest punching heavies in existence (at the time ) going full bore until one of them dropped, FOR GOOD........Great fight!

Utterly without boxing skills. They were just punishing each other. No defense. Almost every punch landed. A crazy fight. Very dramatic.

oh, again? yes, you read that right.
Lyle learned to box in jail, and was once stabbed severely. he died on the operating table- TWICE- and pulled through.
i expect him back by next spring at the latest.
