  • What's that "crash" sound at 0:11 ?

  • got to love the last 32 seconds.

  • Was this stolen from God's iPod?

    That's the only possible explanation.

  • the part that kicks in at 0:36 I can't remember what it's called (ah "the middle eight" thanks wikipedia) anyway, that part I thought was a new addition when I first heard this theme back in the 80s with the Leisure Hive. I didn't realise it had originally been part of the theme but taken out during the Tom Baker years (the years I was most familiar with, though I had seen most of the Pertwee episodes as well I don't remember the middle eight from them at all)

  • @k1ng401 Isn't it good that they came to their senses and put the "middle eight" back in? I think that's the best part!

  • Colin Baker is best I think

  • It's weird, I'm 13 and have been growing up with the new series but this version of the theme and Peter Davison's Doctor will always be what defines Doctor Who for me.

  • @Randomaited its not werid, a lot of young kids these days reconise this over the new themes, its more doctor who.

  • Long live the Yamaha CS80!!

  • This Is my fav Doctor Who theme

  • 2 people have clearly betrayed their allegiance to Doctor Who.

    EXTERMINATE THE BASTARDS!

  • @TheDoctorWhoFan909 Exterminate, EXTERMINATE!!!

  • STILL the best! I think its a crime that The Doctor doesn't have his face appear in the theme anymore.

  • Peter Howell FTMFW!!!

  • My first episode that I can remember seeing was The Visitation. It wasnt a bad story, but It got me hooked on Doctor Who forevermore. Ive seen it all (well as much still exists) and this tune was always my favorite.

  • This is "my" Dr. Who theme. The one I remember most. I heard the one immediately preceding it as well, but this one stuck with me more as a child. I enjoy virtually all the themese to one degree or another, but this one... This one will always be my favorite.

  • The classic series is superior in everyway. As a person that discovered Doctor who thanks to the new series I say this. The new series is just a soap opera with convoluted story arcs that fail to deliver at the end. The classic series is like a detective novel where in every episode of the story you discover something new. . Modern science fiction is unimaginative and fails to capture the feeling of a good science fiction story.

  • Best theme song for a t.v series in history! You cannot tell me that after listening to this great intro that you are not hyped for the episode

  • first time i heard this was in the five doctors

  • 1:02 is awesome for some reason.

  • ... I don't know if anybody has said this, but, I will now,

    The eighties brought me here.

    *Aspiration*

  • The middle-eight is so awesome in this theme, probably at its best

  • this is my favorite one ^ ^

  • look sumwhat like starwars

  • The one dislike is the Master

  • I love this so much!!!!!!!!! This is what I think of when I hear doctor who  I don't like the series 5 theame not cause I don't like Matt smith or anything just cause it doesn't have that thrilling electronic synthesizer sound!

  • @silverspoons96 But it does use the synthesizer...

  • @EvilKarmaAngel i know! but im just saying it doest have that thrilling electronic sound!

  • @silverspoons96 I heard one of these tunes years ago when I were little but on a proper system, set up properly for as perfect playback as possible and it was so dam expressive that my stomach was churning. Thrilling wasn't the word, it was beyond words. You didn't just hear it, you felt every emotion. Its not just hearing the sound, it gave me feeling. Unbelievable.

  • All the themes are epic. Period. and @DrusillaDarko, like all the themes, there is a tv version, and an album version. This would be the album version, which is longer. The tv version is in the shows.

  • Its amazing that some people now know this as their first Doctor Who theme. I can personally say I like it better than the original.

  • Do you have the closing theme of this version,I find that the best cliffhanger music then macoys the smiths, then tennant.

  • I am very confused right now,is this the theme for 4th and 5th,since 6th had his own version,or is this Colins theme,or is it Tom's final and Davisons theme, help me out,I feel like an old cliffhanger.

  • @TheMrOkamiden This theme was used for Tom's last series and all of Davison's tenure. It was updated for Colin's first series and replaced for his second.

  • I recommend Making of the '80s Doctor Who Theme to anyone Who's Ever Wondered how This version of the Doctor Who Theme was made!

  • wait, on person disliked? WHAT IS THIS TREASON?

  • @animationdude56 Davros!

  • @slammy102 hmm.

  • Only the master could dislike this video.

  • @MrFishman55

    Or Michael Grade.

  • 1 person hasn't met the Doctor.

  • This is definitely my favorite version of the Doctor Who theme!

  • this is probably my favorite of all the themes! (well, at least of the original run)

  • Ah The Good Days Of The Epic Starfeild. It Just Never Ever Gets Old Dosent It?

  • One of the most haunting pieces of music ever written..........

  • 1 Guy got pwned by the Daleks

  • Thanks for posting this. I bought this song on a 45 as a kid (and still have it somewhere). It's great to be able to listen to it again.

  • Good bye Delia Derbyshire....

    hello 80's style elecronica!

  • Where can I get this on MP3?

  • Amazing theme so 80s!

  • Mostly I'm happy with the new Doctor Who themes, but what I really miss is 1:57 - 2:08. That chord progression just kills me every time I hear it. It's fantastic.

  • I love this theme the most

  • I love that bit at 1:26 - 1:32 and 1:47 - 1:57, its brilliant, they should put that back in the current theme!

  • My favourite version of the theme, especially the loud "stinger" that opens it.

On a related note, the Production Bible from this era of the show states "Will assistants please note on all TX forms the following... OPENING: First 3" of opening titles is DELIBERATELY loud." :)

  • Please rise for the National Anthem of the United Kingdom...

  • @Badgerjohn27 i approve of this comment.

  • @Badgerjohn27 God Save Our Gracious Doc...Long Live Our Noble Doc...through all his incarnations!! LOL!!

  • @Badgerjohn27 yes and tom baker being prime minister haha

  • Comment removed

  • @Badgerjohn27 And the Timelords

  • Murray Gold's versions are terrible!

  • @paulmorris7777 Nothing is wrong with his themes.

  • I've always loved the "middle 8". The original seemed ethereal and other-worldly. This version (my favorite) is more soaring and joyful.

  • love it, it;s almost mystic / trance like, loved Tom Baker. I actually met Jon Pertwee back in the 1980's when they did a Doctor Who exhibit in Knoxville, Tn on Cedar Bluff Rd. I won the door prize and shook Jon Pertwee's hand. I was in too much shock to say much of anything to him. Wish I did. Is Mr. Pertwee still alive?

  • @daniel57269 No, he sadly passed away about 15 years ago. It's a real shame, because of all the previous doctors, he was the one that interacted with the fans the most. I wish I'd met him...

  • Bring back this one, best theme version by f-in MILES!

  • Phelous Who

  • Wow, Just Wow

  • Coolest Theme to any Sci-FI show ever!

  • The Tom Baker years.

Best stories and companions: Series 12 and 13

Best music: Series 18. Hands down. This arrangement is amazing.

  • 1:58 - end EPIC! Kinda sounds like something off Star Wars. I just accidentally made reference to an episode which uses this theme, didn't I?

  • Doctor Who is an awesome show... and this opening theme escalades it's awesomeness to the nth degree. :)

  • I listened to all of the themes you had uploaded, and I think that this one is the best. It sounds more clear and crisp than the ones before it, but it doesn't lose the electronic feel and creep factor that the ones after it did. Plus, it has the "stutter" and the "middle 8" that many of them don't have.

  • I'm not very fond of this version of the theme personally.

  • @LeonSKennedy828 This one took a bit to grow on me and it's ok. It's better than the versions that came after. This was still had an ethereal quality while the latter versions either went over board on the brass or became mostly bass line. The more recent versions had to resort to including bits of the original composition - which goes to show you - you can't beat the original.

  • This is perhaps one of the best sci-fi themes ever!

  • The Master disliked this video

  • @Furbydude05 its THE MASTER!!!!!!!!!!

  • @Furbydude05 Fag.

  • @Blirith What? He was such a huge enemy for the Doctor at the time.

  • @Furbydude05 And davros.

  • Best version of the theme EVER!

I grew up with this.Long live Peter Davison the best Doctor EVER!

  • tom baker was in 1981 and they used this version. then davison for 3 seasons and colin baker for another 3.

  • Well the 11nth one is cool

  • Awsome!

  • the best theme I think although it is long before my time (:

can anyone tell me 80-85 that was Tom Baker wasnt it ??

  • @thebritish25 Baker was 1975-1980. Peter Davison was 1981-1984, and Colin Baker was 195-1986.

  • Welcome to the 80's

  • @Lufttygger306 i can see it a 80s concert and this theme comes on and peter davidson guest of honour is in the dancing crowd

  • definately my favourite theme EVER!!!! peter howell should come back and compose a modern version of this theme, because the 2007 remix wasn't too different

  • @darth jedi you're an absolute scholar and a gentlemen :) thankyou for this playlist. love this version. reminds me of my childhood watching peter davison. thank you so much :)

  • yup, this is definitly from the 80's, too techno. excelent series tho

  • I love this middle 8! I also like glynn middle 8.

  • @DoctorWhoCenter2010 yep this middle 8 and glynns middle eights are pretty good, i also like murray golds series 5 middle eight coz it's so jazzy and poppy :D

  • This for me is the best Doctor who theme of them all!!!

  • I was terrified of this theme. Used to run away. Oh give me a break. I was 5.

  • They need to bring some of the effects back from this era I think

  • God, I love the baseline. I love it even more in the glynn theme!

  • this version is scARIER

  • This and the Derbyshire version are constantly vying for my favourite version of the theme. Fantastic re-arrangement by Howall. I have it as a ringtone! :D

  • i like the 5 doctors ending theme, but it looks like he doesn't have it

  • Could anyone tell me when the part 0:35 - 0:50 was written? It does not appear to be in the original theme. When did it make an appearance and did the original composer write it or someone else?

For once it truly adds to a haunting theme.

My thanks to anyone who can answer.

    x

  • @DrusillaDarko Eh? You mean the middle-8?! It was in the original theme (as demonstrated in my other videos) and in the original composition by Ron Grainer. As someone who is lucky enough to have a copy of the original sheet music I should know!

  • @DarthJedi2005 I hate it when they cut that bit out of the theme!

  • @DarthJedi2005 Thank you for the reply. I see that is indeed the case now - I should have watched your videos sooner. Much appreciated.

    x

  • @DarthJedi2005 why is it called middle-8?

  • @thDWeffect It's musical theory - the middle-8 is the bit of a song or piece of music which is different to the main melody. It's generally in the middle of the piece, and is usually 8 bars long. Hence middle-8.

  • @DarthJedi2005 he might think it's different because the howell themes middle 8 is slightly different to the others

  • @DarthJedi2005 Really. You own the actual sheet music that ron grainer writ and derbyshire used in the radiophonic workshop?

  • @startrekgamer Yep! Well, a digital photocopy/scan of it anyway.

  • @DarthJedi2005remixes Then sorry to burst your bubble but that technically counts as a reprint not the original. If ya got it off the internet.

  • @startrekgamer Why? If it's a direct copy of Ron Grainer's original work, then why is it a reprint? That's a bit like saying that a DVD of an episode is not the actual episode because it's been copied!

  • @DarthJedi2005remixes Because it isn't exactly the original. Im not saying that some parts of the song are different. If it's been coppied it's a reprint. And btw, in the country I live in (USA) we don't sell the original versions of the episodes. We sell remastered (slightly, still somethings about them are still fake looking.) of the episodes. So if I wanna see an episode of Doctor Who, I have to go on this site to see the slightly unremastered episodes.

  • @DarthJedi2005 thats what that part of the song is called? oh yay now i have a name for it! its my favorite part of the song XD

  • @DarthJedi2005

    watch?v=dRYQEmwPJjQ

  • @DrusillaDarko

You can hear middle-8 at the end of all episodes throughout Tom Baker's last series all the way to Colin Baker's first series :D

I'd love to get a copy of the original sheet of music as well. Wouldn't mind having Dominic Glynn's version on a music sheet either :D

  • @DrusillaDarko

It was always part of the theme, it was played in the ending credits. It is actually my favorit part of the theme!

  • @DrusillaDarko It was always part of the theme, it was played in the ending credits. It is actually my favorit part of the theme!

  • @DrusillaDarko if im not mistaken i think that part appears in the five docters end credits as the theme merges to the howell theme check it

  • @mufcgazza2k7

    You're right!

    My thanx,

    x

  • @DrusillaDarko shocking lack of Dr Who knowledge

  • @DrusillaDarko

  • I want this as my Ringtone.

  • @PrimusPrimal1995 I have it has ringtone, and the tardis "landing" has incoming message!

  • @Antropologopt Fuck yes. That is win.

  • Great version and fantastic job by music arranger & producer Peter Howell. Reminds me of Giorgio Moroder.

  • This was the doctor who theme when I first started watching Doctor Who, brings back memories.

I think just like people have fond memories of their first doctor (Davison for me) they also have fond memories of their first theme.

  • This is my favourite of all the different versions.

  • @GrandDizzy Me too!

  • It's so crazy how much this theme has changed sine the 80's. It's orchestral now, but then it was a bit more space-y, lol. I like them both in different ways. This one because it's funky and the other version because it's the one I have been watching.

  • This is the version I grew up to and remember from my childhood and it has always haunted me ever since and sends a shiver to my spine, just a thought.

  • Seems very magical

  • I love this version of the theme. Its funky

  • this one and the new one is the only 2 i remember

who would have known, the 4 beats is the heartbeat of a timelord. i mean i know he was suppose to have 2 hearts but i never really thought about it untill the newer dr whos then i thought ohhh of course lol

  • My god I never thought of that. lol

  • @kaleluk31 I don't think that's right because the theme started in 1963 when they didn't know he had two hearts so maybe it is just a coincedence.

  • This was in 1980...all the synth's used were analog beasts. CS-80, Arp Odyssey...

  • Wow, I didn't realise. Either way, the sounds aren't pleasing to my ear for some reason.

  • I can certainly see where you're coming from though...and that synth brass certainly is nice.

  • Makes me want to jump up and scream 'Doctor!!' in a Davros like-manner.

  • For some reason--and I have no idea why...--this particular version of the theme bothers me slightly.

Maybe I have a grudge against early 1980s music that I wasn't aware of...

  • I look forward to this every Doctor who episode, the theme explains like everything, the mystery, the adventure and the evil things that on the show. Best part of it!

  • Man, nothing can beat that bassline.

  • just imagine if they brought this back for season 5, only more modern

  • Well, they did kind of ressurrect it for the most recent theme, but I know what you mean, a "jazzed up" version would be great for 2010!

  • I can see it now: Moffatt inviting Mr. Howell back saying "Can you do this again?"

  • @DarthJedi2005 I agree!

  • @DarthJedi2005 I love the 2010 theme. It feels very alien and orchestra makes anything epic, especially the Doctor Who theme.

But my personal favorite is this and Colin Baker's version for Trial of a Time Lord.

  • @DarthJedi2005 What do you mean they ressurected it? This version?

  • @KelvTwelve Some of the orchestrations on the 2007-2010 theme (for that is the one I was referring to) are very similar to the synth elements for this theme.

  • Of all of the theme tunes in doctor who , this is the COOL one! :D

  • Distinctive Yamaha CS-80 sounds. Two thumbs up!

  • BRILLIANT!!!

  • Doctor Who pre-regeneration cliff hanger preview 2010

  • Excuse me?

  • This is the DEFINITIVE Dr. Who theme!!! Makes me think of Vangelis (the guy who wrote the movie theme songs for Chariots of Fire and Blade Runner).

  • Nice theme, it's just the original, just a little bit touched but it's perfect :P

  • Hoping for a remix for Matt Smith's era

  • This is one ofthe coolest doctor who themes around. Let's hear it for the Electric 80's!

  • i love the ist dr 2nd 3rd and the 5th and the 7th and the 9th and 10th lol

  • I know that peter davidson is the actor for the fith doctor
