I'm not really into asian horrors genre but 2 movies that really impressed me are Ring (one of few films that got me scarred) and Kaidan ( its not really a horror, rather some traditional scary stories put into a film but it has one of greatest imagery i've seen in a film, kinda reminds me Kurosawa's Ran and Kagemusha movies)

Yes, Japanese horror movies are scary. I live in Tokyo Japan (for 5 years now)and I, myself,have seen such type of ghosts. My Japanese friends have also encountered female ghosts with long hair. Most of them are in full body,not orbs as in the US. Some Japanese horror movies are based on actual events that still occur to this day.
